how many runs did jeff francoeur's arm save?

So, i'm watching the game against Atlanta the other night, and the boys in the booth are once again defending Frenchy, when Burkhardt asks how many runs did his arm save, in a way that suggested the self-evident answer was enough to justify Frenchy's presence in a major league lineup.

I threw up a little in my mouth.

So today i read Pat flood's blog, and he deals with the issue.

i feel better now.

Interesting. Next they may be able to calculate Frenchy's E.R.A.

Frenchy's the Rey Ordonez of right fielders. This is not a compliment.

It's clear that it's not a compliment, but it's also not entirely fair. Neither one may have had the defense to make up for a poor bat (few do), but Ordoņez wasn't an average glove man with a spectacular arm, he was a complete package at shortstop with Gold Glove skills and two (OE: three!) actual Gold Glove awards to show for it.

It was close at times, but I did feel Ordonez made up for his lack of offense on defense most of the time. It was a LOT closer than Frenchy anyway, given that it was at SS.

I'm surprised at how similar Frenchy and Rey were ... two dreadful liabilities that nevertheless, played all the time ... perhaps the two most over-hyped Mets of the last 15 or 20 years ... hurting more than helping the cause with every plate appearance they accumulated though you would never know it from the Orwellian MetSpeak churned out by the organization on a daily basis in defense of these black holes ... Mets marketing at its most contrived and insulting.

I don't think Fracoeur was over-hyped by anyone other than Jerry Manuel.

I have no idea what you're talking about. Are you the Straw Man?

Among other things, Francoeur was one of three or four players on his own gigantic subway poster in this year's preseason "We Believe" ad campaign. Frenchy was literally the poster boy for the franchise. His image was selected for display on an oversized 2010 Topps baseball card at CF for the installation where Mets history is represented by one Topps Mets card from every season of the team's existence.

Why not...he was one of the 3 or 4 best players on the team during his time here last season. I'm not surprised the team would choose his goofy-toofy grin as something to build on during the pre-season after a dismal 2009.

If we're being literal, I would wager Wright, Reyes, Santana and even K-Rod appeared on more Mets posters than Frenchy over the past 13 months.

That was a mistake...so I'll agree with you there. But, let's not confuse the team getting behind an unexpected bright spot from the 2009 season with being one of the most over-hyped Mets of the past 15-20 years. Nearly everyone on the 2002 roster was more over-hyped than Frenchy was this season.

You forgot to mention, "with no repeats" and that the player was chosen by May, if not earlier. If they were choosing it now, I suppose they would go with Dickey.
