What are you listening to in 2010?

Centerfield
Aug 24 2010 08:25 AM

Do we not have one of these threads already? Scanned the NBF but couldn't find it. Feel free to merge if I'm an idiot and missed it.

Anyway, this weekend was my first foray into the world of iTunes. I bought a couple of tracks from Sublime and the Killers that I've been meaning to get. Thinking of buying the Muse album but I can't tell if I'm going to be sick of those songs in a week.

Any recommendations? I know, like, no new music, so I'm open to anything.

Re: What are you listening to in 2010?

Not to whore this site out again but Rdio.com is a terrific resource to find new shit and old shit too, I'm on it all day long. Plus, no mp3s to jam up your hard drive or iTunes making you swallow a useless QuickTime player.

Some new stuff I found there recently and liked: Best Coast (60s inspired heartbreaking pop songs) and Lissie (indie chick "folk" singer, a little too put together but if I had to guess probably a future supastar).

I am digging on the old stuff though, Sam Phillips' Martinis & Bikinis and Chris Isaak's Forever Blue are both great records I hadn't heard in years and highly recommend. I am also trying to reconstruct the "Tempted by the Fruit of 1981" playlist.

Ha-- liked that Sam Phillips record lots during high school. T-Bone Burnett's lady, no?

In your sonic neighborhood, CF... I've liked what I've heard from Vampire Weekend. Slightly more ambitious-- and one I've really liked for the last two weeks or so, since a friend recommended it-- is Titus Andronicus' The Monitor. It's a concept album kinda linking Civil War battles to the battles of romantic relationship (would it surprise you if I told you Conor Oberst was involved?)... and it actually kinda works. More importantly... the music's good.

Also rough and ready and kick-ass: the newest Black Keys.

Re: What are you listening to in 2010?

Yes, I've heard that Titus Andronicus, I almost made that a Track of the Day once.

I like how it starts and ends, but that lengthy instrumental break between the verses is a little bit of a mountain to climb.

Re: What are you listening to in 2010?

Agreed w/ JCL on Best Coast. She's this, like, 19-year old chick all danked out on kind bud who lives on the beach and just writes great tunes about the beach and boys and pot. She dates alt-macbook rocker WAVVES and his latest album "King of the Beach" is fun summertime music, too. http://rd.io/x/QGJRK3qcZg

Dawes is one of my favorite bands lately. 20-something year old guys from Malibu who write this 70's sounding Laurel Canyon-inspired music with big 3-part harmonies all over. Here's a sample: http://rd.io/x/QGJRK3HabQ

Agreed w/ JCL just as much on Rdio, too. Not as with it as Lala when it comes to adding new release stuff, but I still use the hell out of it.

Arcade Fire's got a new one that is big, anthemic, and rocky. That album will litter year-end best-of lists fo sho. Agreed on the Black Keys album. How hot is this goddamn track? http://rd.io/x/QGJRK2t_hw

New album by Eels I'll pickup. Not new new, but really loving both Mumford & Sons debut and Scottish rockers Frightened Rabbit.

Mumford: http://rd.io/x/QGJRK3TGWA

Rabbit: http://rd.io/x/QGJRKwbNhw

Re: What are you listening to in 2010?

You guys are awesome. Checked out a bunch of these. Out of them the Black Keys and Arcade Fire were my favorites...turns out I've heard some of the Arcade Fire stuff before but never put it together. Really good stuff.

Stuff others recommended that I liked were Audioslave (new music for me is anything post-2000), Foo Fighters, the Strokes...also really like Laredo by Band of Horses.

Got a recommendation for Neon Trees, they were just ok for me. My Chemical Romance was just ok too, their melodies are a little campy, but it's probably meant to be ironic or something.

The only band I really did not like was Coldplay. I can't see why they're so popular, and I wish people would stop recommending them to me as something I'd like. It makes me wonder if I'm making a bad impression on folks.

Re: What are you listening to in 2010?

Coldplay is one of those things that people who should know better nonetheless adopt. It's like they really like U2 so they have to see Coldplay also. Some explicitly say this to me.

If you like 'em, you like 'em. But don't support them because you see them as a minor-league U2. Their players are never going to get called up. If you like U2, buy up the Call's back catalog.

Re: What are you listening to in 2010?

If people like late-period U2 (as opposed to, say, tolerating it), that's an automatic disqualifier-- or, at the very least, a Bunyanesque qualifier-- for their recommendations in my book.

Finally checked out Band of Horses: it is good. Thoughts on Minus the Bear, Seo (et. al.)?

Never listened to Minus the Bear. Just put them in the queue now, an album called "OMNI". Not sure I'm 'vibing it'. Is that the right one?

LOVE Band of Horses. Some absolute gems on all 3 of their albums & "Infinite Arms" is definitely on of my favs from 2010.

A couple more of my favs from this year.

Local Natives "Gorilla Manor": http://rd.io/x/QGJRPkFRFA New LA indie darlings. That first track has "Prius" commercial written all over it.

Laura Marling "I Speak Because I Can": http://rd.io/x/QGJRPkGD5A Sparse, sad-sounding, & pretty.

Beach House "Teen Dream": http://rd.io/x/QGJRPkFGAA dreamy, atmospheric pop music.

One more... Surfer Blood "Astro Coast" http://rd.io/x/QGJRPkKhHw Good to put with Best Coast on your "Ultimate Summer Mix Jam" comp.

Dig this:

Njal proposed to Elin at the Band of Horses show in Oslo earlier this year. When the Bride and Groom heard that BoH was to play a festival in Tromso on the same day of their wedding, they contacted the band and told them their story. With all the coincidences surrounding the wedding, the band said, "What the hell" and decided to surprise the couple. The band showed up minutes after landing in Tromso to play Marry Song at their ceremony. BoH was honored to be a part of the couple's special day. Congratulations Njal and Elin!

I'm usually 5 to 10 years behind in mainstream music -- but very current on what my wife dismisses as "God rock."

Alas, I announced last month that I've discovered a "new" band called. O.A.R. My kids and wife rolled their eyes.

Good music to run to. I made a playlist with some of the good live songs, and I've learned they have many live CDs.

"Love and Memories," "Shattered," "Hey Girl" and "This Town" are my faves.

Haven't heard it yet. Although it seems to me that ever since JCM was no longer seen as a threat to Petty and Springsteen his reviews improved: I've been fooled before into thinking Cuttin Heads or Human Wheels were greatness when they were really more like goodness.

I will give it a listen!

Re: What are you listening to in 2010?

There's nothing groundbreaking about it...JCM has been pretty formulaic in his songwriting for the past 15 years or so. I think he realizes that he's not Springsteen or Petty at this point in his career.

I like the mono recordings and the history in the studios he chose to record in. I wouldn't call it a great album, but it's definitely good enough.

Yeah, he's his own guy, I didn't mean to imply otherwise. I just always got the feeling that the Rolling Stone magazine "establishment" felt that Mellencamp was scoring with fans they felt should be spending their $$ on Springsteen records instead.

Yeah, the fall Mellencamp dates are all in the Midwest. I'd go see him, but he's not even coming close enough to me where I wouldn't need to fork over hotel room money.

I saw him back in the Cherry Bomb days when I was a teenager. He gives a good show.

Re: What are you listening to in 2010?

Really? We saw him at Jones Beach maybe ten or so years ago. Outside of a couple of songs that really clicked -- mostly the stuff from the just-released "Cuttin' Heads" like "Peaceful World" and a stripped-back "Women Seem," plus a cool version of "Gimme Shelter" -- we thought he was boring. I don't think he moved from center stage once; he was like a statue.

I did enjoy the "Trouble No More" disc, though.

Re: What are you listening to in 2010?

I saw him a few years ago on the greatest hits tour, and it was really neat. He was touring with Donovan, and instead of having Donovan appear as an opener, he brought him out in the middle of the set, played "Sunshine Superman" with him, then left him with the band. Donovan went through his set of hits and a couple songs from his then-new CD, them Mellencamp came back on and finished his set.

Donovan then came on to sing some of the encores with Mellencamp. I thought it seemed like a reverent way to treat someone from the earlier generation.

I like most of his stuff -- and "Cutting Heads" a lot -- but the last disc seemed a little depressing and I never got into it.

I liked what I've heard from Band of Horses, but haven't found the time to invest in them monetarily or emotionally, but dear, they really sound like they picked up whetre the Jayhawks and Tomorrow the Green Grass left off.

A new album by Mellancamp is meaningful because he's a big enough prick when it comes to getting his music to his (or any) audience, he's become a wayshower for others who've felt locked out or unable to figure out the current system.

That's the same way Counting Crows did their last tour. Instead of an opener (Spearhead, I believe), they had the other band(s) join them in and out of the regular set. It's a really cool idea.

Just put "Tomorrow the Green Grass" in my queue. As for music budget stuff, I've saved so much money on music going w/ Rdio*. $10 bucks a month and I've bought just 1 CD since JCL got me on board (& that cd was a gift). I figure I've had plenty of $120 afternoons on new-release Tuesday at my neighborhood record joint, but now that's what I'm lined up to pay for a year of Rdio & couldn't be happier w/ it so far. Glad to piss that money away elsewhere.

Was gonna try to recommend 1 Band of Horsies album and I guess if I had a gun to my head, I'd say the second release "Cease to Begin" might be the best of 3 great albums. But it's all big, mid-tempo rock with harmonies and there are gems on all 3 releases.

*not an employee or stock-holder though I sound like one. Just a fan boi.

which Seo recommended on page 1 of this thread and CF liked. I dig it too. It's like an old-time 'album'. Each song plays on the title of the album. Also check out the groundbreaking video for 'We Wait'. You type in the address of the house you grew up in and watch what happens.

I was also told that this - Sleigh Bells, 'Treats' - was really good:

however, I've only given it one listen and so far it hasn't grabbed me. I'll keep giving it a go. I hear a little Bjork-ish thing going in there and I've always liked her stuff. The guy that recommended it has a pretty solid track record with me so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

Right NOW!!!! I'm listening to the new all-Pearl Jam station on Sirius. Yup. 20 year anniversary for the band yesterday, so Siri launched their own station. It's a lot like the Dead channel, in that they play tons of live stuff because PJ has so many good-sounding, authorized bootlegs. I know a lot of peeps can take or leave these guys, but I've always thought they're fantastic. They played the 21 May 2010 show @ MSG this morning (think someone from here might've been at that one). It sounded awesome and I bought the bootleg for $9.99 at their website after. Deets on the station here:
