The vinyl shortage has continued to plague the nation, and the record company has called you in to combine Bruce Springsteen's sister 1992 releases, Human Touch and Lucky Town, into an 11-song album. The hope is not only in ecology, but in creating a single good album out of what many* would consider to be the two worst efforts of the Boss's career!

*- not me, necessarily

Yeah, I'll have to drink a little more before I touch this one.

Interesting answer, considering your avatar.

I've selected six or seven, but I have to review the LPs. I'm a big fan of the title track to Human Touch. Show me somebody who ain't. It's like a sequel to "Tunnel of Love," in compositional style and arrangment, as much as it is chronologically.

I left off track 14 of Human Touch: Pony Boy off the list. If you're inclined to include it then write it in and select only 10 above.

Like anyone would.

I'd like to melt those two albums down into a puddle of black waxy nastiness and then pour the contents into the Gulf of Mexico.

No offense to you Boss lovers out there, those who know him from way back, or just fans, but Springsteen sucks a Hoboken cock.

Perhaps here or in another thread, you could elaborate, because I say nuh-uh.

There's a lot to dislike or disapprove of in the Springsteen universe, but nuh-uh.

Argh. You people already made me listen to "The River," and my ears just stopped bleeding yesterday. Now I have to through these? Argh again.

I think you should upload the entire Bruce collection to your new 160 gig iPod classic.

You can see and hear my list here:

(I even put them in an album order).

In general, Lucky Town is the better album, IMO. You could just staple the song "Human Touch" to it and have a pretty strong 11 right there. Apparently HT was all ready to go as a single LP and Springsteen went to record a new song and wound up with 10. It's a brighter, shorter, easier to hear. I think he must have got over whatever lingering "Love Stinks" self-loathing he carried over from Tunnel of Love and also, the desire to sound like Huey Lewis he exhibited with some of the filler cuts on HT.

Rock stars had dual-release fever back then as Guns n Roses did the Use Your Illusion gimmick too around then.

Anyway, for overlooked and comparatively weak elpees, I think this is ain't a bad 11.

Human Touch
Better Days
Local Hero
With Every Wish
If I Should Fall Behind
Lucky Town
Man's Job
Leap of Faith
Living Proof (note: This song is profoundly better 6 years into marriage with a kid than it ever was before)
Cross My Heart
Beautiful Reward

Now a life of leisure and a pirate's treasure
Don't make much for tragedy
But it's a sad man my friend who's livin' in his own skin
And can't stand the company

"Human Touch" is arguably the best song Bruce wrote between "Tunnel of Love" (1987) and "The Rising" (2002) -- with apologies to "Streets of Philadelphia." A true masterpiece on an uneven album.

As with many things Bruce, it is improved upon live. Check out this version (with E Street backing him): http://www.megaupload.com/?d=S2OE8C9F

Re: Human Town/Lucky Touch

Very tough to narrow these down but mine is:

Side A:
Human Touch
Lucky Town
I Wish I Were Blind
Roll of the Dice
Real World

Side B:
Better Days
Leap of Faith
If I Should Fall Behind
The Big Muddy
Living Proof
My Beautiful Reward

"Real World" is a true overlooked gem, even it what some argue is an over-glossy production style on the album.

Check out that last verse:

I wanna find some answers I wanna ask for some help
I'm tired of running scared
Baby let's get our bags packed
We'll take it here to hell and heaven and back
And if love is hopeless, hopeless at best
Come on put on your party dress it's ours tonight
And we're goin' with the tumblin' dice

I'm not a huge Bruce fan, but I like these CDs. The live CD that followed from the MTV concert is good, too.
