Michael K says it will be Bob Melvin

If you care what Michael Kay says, he said today that he's heard that Bob Melvin will definitely be the next Mets manager.

I find that hard to believe...that anyone cares what Michael Kay says, that is.

If it was "definite" then I'd think they'd install him now, rather than let Jerry run out the string.

Yes, they should send Jerry on gardening leave.

Installing him now would probably be healthier for him. If he starts the season next year as the new guy, the fans will boo him for being Not-Bobby. If he opens 2010 after finishing 2009, he'll be merely a cold but established fact of life rather than a new bitter pill to swallow.

Would they? I think they'd be just as likely to cheer him for being Not-Jerry. I have to admit that I probably don't have a real sense about what Mets fandom in general wants, but my guess is that Bobby Valentine is more popular in this forum than he is outside it. But I could be very wrong.

If anything, I think he's _more_ popular outside it. He'd be my choice. It's an uneducated choice, but I know he fits my criteria of being intelligent and understanding the game. Unless the manager is Jerry Manuel, I'm not going to boo whoever it is, but I'd be really disappointed if it was Melvin. (and not just because Kay would be right about something) I think I agree with Edgy that it'll be something big coming. Hopefully it's not big for big's sake, and is a carefully thought out and planned altering of the team's long term plans.

Based on their recent history, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Mets gave the job to Don Mattingly or Razor Shines.

I wonder sometimes about how out-of-touch Gammons is, and how smug Adam Rubin's become, but it would be really big if the former is right and the latter is wrong since Gammo is saying Bobby is the man and Rubin suggesting Backman is inevitable.

Melvin screams unexcitement, division title and LDS victory notwithstanding, but I think "the fans" (as if they're/we're all one blob) would give him at least one homestand's grace before deciding he was the problem. The Bobby V factor depends on how much he gets mentioned, if he gets interviewed, if he winds up in Florida or anywhere. Come Opening Day 2011, the focus will likely be on the players. Nobody much cares about the manager until he proves (or seems to prove) he doesn't know what he's doing. That usually takes at least a couple of weeks, even in New York.

I support Bobby V. All others are also rans.

To suggest that a new manager has been secretly anointed means that they've made a decision on the GM, since you would ideally hire the GM first.

Agreed!

Sometimes listening to him, Gammons seems far out of touch, like he still thinks that Babe Ruth is still on the Red Sox (OK, an exaggeration, but you know what I mean). Then a bit of lucidity creeps into to his pronouncements. I'm never really sure which Gammons we're getting. But if he's right and its Bobby V, it certainly would fit Edgy's description of "something big". And I sure hope its not Torre Part Deux. Later

Or it means they've made the decision to keep the GM they have.

If Kay is so sure about this information, then why isn't all over ESPN? It's not like ESPN is shy about promoting itself.

i think Kay heard wrong... what was actually said was that the Mets manager would be jumped in the parking lot and GIVEN a melvin.

Joe Torre has now apologized to Kay and Melvin....
