Nothing really significant here, but a fun little chat with a former ballplayer who became a Chicago White Sox broadcaster.

Not much of a trivia question, but Chuck Bednarik, subject of the article above Ralph's, is most famous for what?

He put such a hit on Jint pretty-boy Frank Gifford that it changed the way Gifford played for the rest of his career.
He went from a running back who occasionally caught passes to mostly a pass catcher who only ran sideline routes so he wouldn't take a hit.

Something else.

I don't know. I thought that iconic shot of him standing over an unconscious Frank Gifford was the answer.

I already wrote about it in "Apropos of Jill Carroll," but I have a Philly friend who wants to print an entire wall with that shot.

Last guy to be an everyday starter on offense and defense.

Here, I fixed it for you.

I have to say that clipping is packed:

[list][*]Ralph Kiner on Babe Ruth (sounded just as thoughtful as the Ralph of today),[/*:m]
[*]the great Vada Pinson writhing in pain after getting plunked and heading to the hospital, [/*:m]
[*]Chuck Bednarik playing both sides of the ball in the NFL, [/*:m]
[*]a golfer being denied a chance to compete because he's black, [/*:m]
[*]a small item about a challenge from the mayor of West Berlin that presages one of the most famous speeches in presidential history, [/*:m]
[*]Soviet propaganda claiming they found a "lost continent,"[/*:m]
[*]cartoons of gladhanding white-collar white guys, [/*:m]
[*]an article that's a thinly disguised excuse to show college chicks in swimwear,[/*:m]
[*]promises of technology relieving housewives of the doldroms of housewifery and it's effects on their sexual attractiveness,[/*:m]
[*]a shot from the filming of The Longest Day,[/*:m]
[*]a boxscore from a league called "Rainbow Softball," demonstrating how tolerant and supportive the Journal was of gays,[/*:m]
[*]a Family Circus cartoon in which Bill Keane draws Thelm with "Steve," apparently the father of the three oldest kids before Big Bill came along, sired P.J., and kicked Stevie to the curb --- to which, by the looks of it, Steve was all to happy to go.[/*:m]
[*]Rex Morgan when it was less sexily rendered, and Apartment 3G when it was moreso.[/*:m][/list:u]

I miss those triple-threat guys like Gifford and Hornung.

Wow... that Steve thing is interesting. I never knew that the Family Circus dad was ever anyone other than Bil Keane.

The Wisconsin co-eds in Hawaii feature is strange. It looks like they used weird Photoshop effects on the second and third photos. And they seem to be tempting would-be stalkers by printing Mary Carol Schrieber's home address.

By the values of newspapers of the times, they're probably thinking they're doing that young lady a favor, increasing her eligibility.

I was looking through some old press clippings about my mother-in-law from when she was a young woman, and the tone of a lot of them seemed to be "Here she is boys! What a catch!"

Yeah, I'm sure it never crossed their minds that they might be putting her in any danger. And they probably weren't. It just looks strange from a 2010 perspective. Here's a picture of a pretty girl! And here's her home address!

On page 36 you'll find that Milwaukeeans are already organizing against a Kenyan-born Muslim child just a couple of weeks after his birth.

Also, the Phillies lost 19 in a row. Those were the days.
