That's strange. You can be Babe Ruth or Mickey Mantle, but you can't be Gehrig, DiMaggio, Berra, or Jeter.

I can imagine Derek Jeter and Yogi, Inc. somehow getting the right to license their numbers exclusively when used on Yankee gear, but I'm surprised to see Gehrig missing.

Michael Kay was talking about this on his radio show the other day. He was really irate that some of the famous/ retired numbers ( he specified Gehrig) could be used with someone else's name to make a buck. Later

Obviously Berra is just as protective of his Mets identity --- as is Bobby Valentine and, um, Bruce Boisclair.
