Jerry Engendering Sympathy

Manuel on Torre's "oh yeah, I'd totally take that guy's job" comments Monday:

Manuel says he thinks it’s “curious” when a person comments about a filled position. When asked if he felt Torre’s comments were disrespectful because Manuel currently holds the job, Manuel replied, “Sure, no question.”

Torre pissed me off with that. So did Pelfrey in Sunday's News:

Mike Pelfrey stressed several times, "We already have a manager" and added that he didn't want "to stir it up." But he, just like any Met fan, has heard the speculation about Joe Torre perhaps being the Mets' future manager, which gained steamed Friday when Torre announced he'd step down as the Dodgers' skipper after the season. Asked for his reaction to the chatter, Pelfrey prefaced his remarks Saturday by saying, "I don't know if I want to comment. I don't want to offend anybody, so I don't want to say anything.

"But I think if the organization decides they want to go in a different direction, it'd be kind of cool to have Joe Torre if you could bring him in here. But we have a manager. I think, of course, we haven't played up to expectations and we haven't been as good as we should've been, so if they decide at the end of the year they need to make a move, it'd be fine to have Joe Torre.

"I guess we'll see how it shakes out. But he's obviously an icon, so it'd be cool if he was here - if they decide to go in that direction."

Just go with, "The Mets have a manager," and wait two weeks until they don't.

Torre, in his best Emily Litella, says Never Mind! (Via L.A. Times's Dylan Hernandez).

"I had no intention of making people believe I wanted to manage the Mets."

"I'm closing the door on managing the Mets -- and probably everybody else."

Typical Mets.

Howie reporting it now, and seems offended "word travels immediately these days."

Wait, what did the Mets do? Besides not talk about it? Which is the only thing they can and should do?
