It looked to the whole stadium and everyone watching on TV that he was struck out looking on the previous pitch and gave that smug blue-lipped smile, trying to convince himself and us that the reason he wasn;t punched out was not because of a shitty call, but because he was more talented than the rest of us. Then Uhera gorooved one.

That implies that he ever stopped taking shots. unlikely. Wasn't there a story about him calling game from third base on Texas? or trying to steal signs? something like that. I didn't actually read the book.
