And thus ends 23 days of picking splinters for Mike Nickeas. I wonder what the team record is.

I know he's not "stretched out" but it seems like Perez is probably the best choice for Saturday's start. (Unless maybe it's Valdes?)

Valdes is listed on mets.com as Saturday's probable starter.

Re: IGT 9/29/10 - MIL @ NYM (Game 1)

4:10 start always means an empty stadium for first game of a rescheduled doubleheader...but it's really empty there. If you're within three states of Citi Field, you can probably get over there and pick up a foul ball.

Speaking of empty, David just extended his team record for strikeouts in a season.

Keith just bought hot dogs for the booth. John Franco just wandered in. Mike Nickeas just got his first big league hit.

The things that happen before 5 o'clock.

I think Niese might be a little gassed, or hurt maybe. Way to give up 5 runs with 2 out. Jeez.

Chris Carter is not a major league outfielder.
And if you are going to use him there out of necessity keep him the hell out of Right. I think Bengy Molina could go 1st to 3rd on a one-hop liner to C.C.

I just hope as he's been laboring for a month, he hasn't developed any bad habits in his mechanics.

Niese has been killed by the 'One Big Inning' syndrome.
And, no, it's not just that it seems that way to us. Today was his 6th time this season allowing an inning of 5 or more runs, the most in MLB this year.

I would hope our starting five doesn't include him too ... if that's where
the the bar is set for planning then it's gonna be another season of suck.

Re: IGT 9/29/10 - MIL @ NYM (Game 1)

Seems to me that we've had a bunch of games like this this year, games where we've 'gotten to' their good pitcher only to have our starter or the pen (or both) have an even worse day at the same time.
It's probably happened less often than I think, but I know there were two Halladay games that fit.

Very frustrating.

I don't think it's anywhere near their plans, but that notion by Wayne that starters and relievers are two genetically different animals is silly. As is the notion that what he's succeeded at on Wayne's watch is what he is.

Re: IGT 9/29/10 - MIL @ NYM (Game 1)

"Let's face it --- he's a reliever."

The difference between who is a starter and who is a reliever is an accident as much as anything. And after Tak has been starting and winning for ten years in Japan, nine as a starter, it's a disservice of Wayne or anybody else to smugly label him and typecast him as if any other idea is an athlete being silly and un-self-aware.

He'll probably continue to relieve next year, but he's certainly not wrong for selling himself in a bigger role. Every athlete should.
