Bob Shaw 1933-2010

Bob Shaw, a major league pitcher best known for helping shut out Sandy Koufax and the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 5 of the 1959 World Series, has died of liver caner at his Jupiter home. He was 77.. Shaw spent eleven years in the major leagues, pitched for the Tigers, Athletics, Braves, Giants, Mets and Cubs. His best season was in 1959, when he went 18-6 with a 2.69 ERA for the White Sox. The team made it to the World Series, but fell behind 3-1 to the Dodgers. Shaw combined with Billy Pierce and Dick Donovan for a 1-0 victory in Game 5 at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum, sending the series back to Chicago, where the Dodgers ultimately prevailed. After leaving the big leagues in 1967, Shaw held a number of coaching positions and went into business as a citrus grove owner and real estate investor, his daughter Karen Sowden said. He worked until becoming too sick in May, she said. Aside from his son and Sowden, Shaw is survived by his wife, Asta, and another daughter, Linda Gehring. A memorial service was planned for Wednesday at Jupiter First Church.

A Bronx native, and one of two Shaws on the 1968 Mets. Once balked five times in one game. Rest well, Bob Shaw.

I watched the '59 WS and couldn't believe Koufax could be beaten. RIP Later

Never quite made it on to the list of 20 oldest living Mets. (He didn't miss by much.) Died 7 days after Wayne Twitchell. Not the shortest interval between Mets player deaths, but close. Jack Lamabe and Jim Beauchamp died four days apart in December 2007.

Bob Shaw taught Gaylord Perry how to throw the spitball; was a respectable pitcher for Wes Westrum.

in 1966, he and Dennis Ribant became the first two pitchers in franchise history to finish a season with 10 or more wins and a winning record.
