At least, it threatens to shake out something like this way if the season somehow opens with nothing changing except folks getting healthy.
Yeah, that's the way it's gonna happen.

Certainly nobody's earned it. I just figured him being out of options, and having outperformed Arias and Tejada until he got hurt, he's currently first in line.

I'm actually okay with Ollie as the 5 right now; I still have the tiniest bit of cahnfidence in him turning it around under a new regime.

Really? Bay, Beltran, Wright and Reyes are all very good-to-excellent players. If healthy and playing (reasonably) well, the Mets should be ok.

If. The 500-pound millstone around all Mets teams from the dawn of time. That quote could apply to 2010 as well. And in various forms, 2002, 1992, 1972, to name just a few.
|
Ceetar Sep 28 2010 07:12 AM Re: Projected 2011 Roster |

And it could apply to just about any team ever. Wright and Bay are healthy guys (concussions are odd What if the Phillies don't resign or find an adequate replacement for Werth and Utley doesn't stay healthy all season and Halladay starts to show his age?

Benjamin Grimm Sep 28 2010 07:15 AM Re: Projected 2011 Roster |

Come on! Both Santana and Beltran were under 30 when the Mets acquired them. Sure, Beltran is aging now, but he's also in the sixth year of that contract. He was just shy of 28 when he played his first game as a Met. And Santana was two weeks past his 29th birthday when he made his Mets debut.

I love proposed "solutions" that essentially say the way to get better is: 'Get better players'. Gee thanks, Ace. Aside from the (by now common) stuff about potential front office-v-ownership conflict there's little there that's unique to the Mets. And also I could swear that the NYM minor league system ranked a lot higher than 25th in BA this past year as this guy claims. It wasn't real high on the list IIRC but more up around middle of the pack. Besides, who DOESN'T want more young/cheap players from their system and the one that saw either the introductions or graduations to full-time status the probable 2011 starting 1B & C (Thole & Davis), possibly 2/5th of the rotation (Niese & Mejia), and maybe even a solid bullpen man (Parnell) and starting 2B just in one season can't be dumped on too much.

They don't publish the rankings online. This article had them in the 16-25 range. I wouldn't be surprised to see somebody run with that with an assumption of "25." It also said, "Solid top 10, but the Mets don't have anyone likely to help in New York in 2010." That's a surprise for the Davis and Niese families.

This year's Phils team saw significant time loss from Utley, Rollins, Madson, and Lidge, and saw lesser but significant time loss from Howard and Dick Torino; it also saw underperformance issues from Lidge, parts of the bullpen, and the entire back half of the rotation creep in at various points, as well as a teamwide month-long slump in May and June. If you called them this morning to ask them how those problems struck 'em, they probably wouldn't pick up the phone, because they'd have champagne hangovers.

When they had howard out, did they bat his replacement fourth?
|
LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Sep 28 2010 10:02 AM Re: Projected 2011 Roster |
Har. No, not mostly. But they also had Ross Gload, and traded for Mike Sweeney. The safety net-- both preemptively placed and hastily supplemented-- transitioned nicely to bench scaffolding once he came back full-time. We had Jacobs and a balky Tatis (if healthy, he's solid...) there.

Last night ESPN tried to engineer their roster more than you can imagine. During the post game celebration, they were interviewing the players. Same. Even if they do play up to their utmost potential, though... without above-average support (Davis improving, Pagan and Dickey supplying at least what they did this year, getting average-to-good performances out of 3/4 of the other rotation-dwellers, a deep and resilient and cheapish bench), that's a team that's good enough to finish second to a weaker Phils team than they've got now. And, as Lefty the new guy said, it's a big "if."
|
Edgy DC Sep 28 2010 12:03 PM Re: Projected 2011 Roster |

I'm pessimistic if that's the roster. I know it won't be.
|
LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Sep 28 2010 12:48 PM Re: Projected 2011 Roster |
The problem isn't having "if"s. The problem is, jointly, having "if"s on which you absolutely must rely and the distance between the best-case "if" and the bottom-floor of "if not." The Phils-- and teams built like 'em--seem to have multiple "outs" each season that allow them to absorb even absurd injury waves; even when they were missing 3/4 of the starting infield, they still ran Polanco, a red-hot Werth, a capable Ibanez and Victorino out there most nights. In short, they're Marianas-Trench deep (if you haven't already, look at the amount of times over the last 3-4 seasons Utley's-- hell, Utley AND Rollins-- have missed significant time over the last few years... all division winners).

We really have to get away from scapegoatage on the players. How many games has Ollie even been allowed into in this disastrous second half? How many game have they lost because of this mythical other 25th roster spot holder that he kept off the team?
|
batmagadanleadoff Sep 28 2010 01:42 PM Re: Projected 2011 Roster |
|
In the end, Jerry Manuel was exposed to be the typical bumbling manager that Met fans, over the last 20 years, have come to expect. But in Jerry's defense, he had little to work with in 2010, and wasn't dealt a contending team. Catcher and second base were black holes. Jason Bay was a bigger bust than George Foster was, whether due to injuries, diminished skills or the Citi Field psych-out. Angel Pagan's a 4th outfielder; his playing time against left-handed pitching ought to be kept to a minimum. (I realize that Jerry might be blamed for this one, but if not Angel against lefties, then who? And would it have made enough of a difference to overcome the other deficiencies)? Reyes was not at full strength for one third of the season. And for all of the promise and potential that Ike Davis exhibits, he's a below average hitting first baseman this season and therefore, more liability than asset relative to the NL's other first baseman. Jeff Francoeur should not be getting several hundred plate appearances in a given season and Manuel probably got less rather than more out of the talent that he was managing. But the Mets problems run deeper than those two.
|
Gwreck Sep 28 2010 02:09 PM Re: Projected 2011 Roster |
|
WAR tells us Ike is #8 in the NL this year. He is behind Pujols, Votto, Gonzalez, Huff, Fielder, Howard and Dunn. Ahead of LaRoche, Glaus, Lee (CHC), Sanchez, Berkman (pre-trade), Helton, Loney, and Jones.
|
batmagadanleadoff Sep 28 2010 02:14 PM Re: Projected 2011 Roster |
||
Ike Davis is a terrific fielder. WAR includes defense. I was writing about his hitting. Right now, Ike's about the 9th or 10th best hitting 1B in the NL, up from the very bottom of the barrel. He's having an excellent September. Still, you're not gonna make the playoffs with players that are 8th best WAR at their positions.
|
Ceetar Sep 28 2010 02:18 PM Re: Projected 2011 Roster |
|||
It's about the team, now how each individual position matches up. I mean, Pagan's top 8 in WAR leaguewise isn't he? He was fluttering around there for a while actually, and was much higher around the time he was snubbed for the All-Star game.
|
Edgy DC Sep 28 2010 02:24 PM Re: Projected 2011 Roster |
|
I brought up Francoeur not to hang him, but to argue against hanging. Regarding Ike, I actually think you need plenty of eighth-best guys. And I think there's a good chance he's better than eighth next year.
|
Gwreck Sep 28 2010 03:07 PM Re: Projected 2011 Roster |
|||
I know WAR includes defense. It would be fair to judge Ike on an all-around basis if determining whether he's a liability or asset vis-a-vis the competition, right?
|
Edgy DC Sep 28 2010 03:21 PM Re: Projected 2011 Roster |
He's certainly not a libablity. Let's not confuse average starters with average players --- or average players with hurtful ones.
|
Frayed Knot Sep 28 2010 03:27 PM Re: Projected 2011 Roster |
If you just wont to look at offense and compare him to other NL 1Bs w/more than 400 PAs, Ike lands 9th of 16 in RC/27 (Runs Created per game)

I don't believe he's throwing. A Phillies team doctor found a problem with his shoulder (that was missed by the previous tests due to the location of it. oddly blocked by the MRI or something) that was never repaired and he had surgery to fix it back in July or something.

Edgy DC Sep 28 2010 04:29 PM Re: Projected 2011 Roster |
There's probably a good chance that the ever-silent Mets are envisioning Murphy as the first-team secondbaseman. The secondbase situation is probably the biggest (or near-biggest) place where the current picture will be different on opening day.
|
Ceetar Sep 28 2010 04:32 PM Re: Projected 2011 Roster |

I have no idea what the Mets are thinking. I'd explore what options are out there, while monitoring Murphy in winter leagues while shopping Castillo. I think the bullpen picture will be the differentest, but that's almost always the case.

I'm taking both our claims from yesterday to be nominal favorites to make the roster, but keep in mind that, unless/until Castillo is moved, Emaus joining the team pushes Daniel Murphy toward more outfield time and less infield time. In fact, if it shakes out this way, it'll look like a Willie roster, with infielders serving as backup outfielders.

Not that the roster above is definitive, but he's also futzing up the division of labor, leaving the team with four outfielders and Murphy and Emaus to fill in. Signs are pointing to him being moved, I think.

Yeah, but most infielders are similarly skilled. Similary effective? That's what they need to determine. But if Hu and Tejada are the most alike, good. Hu by Fire may keep Tejada from having to be pre-maturely pressed into service for a second consecutive season.

yeah but Iggy will stick around unless someone signs him. I was wondering that myself. Can they move Santana in the offseason? I'm not sure they mess with the DL until about March 20th. If you recall with Reyes they couldn't put him on the DL retroactively any earlier than that. I imagine they're going to wait until Santana starts throwing for real, since there haven't actually been anything more than guesses. What if he's ready May 20th for instance? probably unlikely, but still. There are rules about removing guys from the 40 man and waivers and all that. some of these administrative things are confusing, but wouldn't that expose them to other teams interests, were they to remove some of these prospects? A lot's gonna have to happen between now and Opening Day anyway, and I'm sure they'll pare down the 41 guys on the roster somehow, or trade some, or whatever.

Yes, that's why I posted the question. To (help) prevent those kinds of false DL claims, all players on the 60 day dsabled list must be added back to the 40 man roster prior to the Rule V draft. But after the draft, I was wondering if there is a specific date after which players can be placed back on the 60 day DL. Later

|
Vic Sage Jan 13 2011 03:43 PM Re: Projected 2011 Roster |
Turner has options, so can be sent down at no cost. Otherwise, he'd have to beat out either Emaus (which would entail giving him back under Rule V) or Hu (which would leave us without a good glove backing up SS/2b). I don't see it happening.

|
Vic Sage Jan 20 2011 02:37 PM Re: Projected 2011 Roster |
you drop Hernandez and Nickeas. They're both likely to pass thru waivers. Then, when you have to settle the 25-man roster after ST, you DL a pitcher on the 40-man (cuz no team gets out of ST unscathed), then add whatever backup catcher you need to to the roster, for the week before Paulino comes back. When Paulino returns, you drop the backup from the 40-man and add back whoever you DL-ed, or whomever else you need.
|
Ceetar Jan 20 2011 02:42 PM Re: Projected 2011 Roster |
|
no. DL'd players still count on the 40 man. (Unless it goes to 60-day or whatever) plus, a player can only be outrighted to the minors once in his career, which probably doesn't become an issue, but no raeson to waste it if you're planning on adding themback.

Edgy DC Mar 14 2011 07:03 AM Re: Projected 2011 Roster |
If that's a gen-u-ine sanitation department t-shirt, then it wouldn't have a Nike logo positioned poifectly to peek out from under a baseball jersey.

It's about that time. You don't want to make too much of the Hernandez-to-second talk, but the roster doesn't have a utility guy, Emaus hasn't been representing, and Hernandez is getting the talk over Hu.

Lost in Ollie's lousy outing yesterday is that O'Connor and Tankersly (the latter already farmed out) have fared no batter. Not hard to see the writing there.

Luis Castillo signed away by Atlanta? You sure about that, Edgy?

Oh, absolutely. Philadelphia was going to sign him but their name was too long to fit in my box at that font size, so Atlanta stepped in.

With Beltran failing to appear more than briefly so far and Pagan day-to-day, our outfield is suddenly failing to whelm to any impressive degree.

Based upon what Rubin said tonight, I'd put Blaine Boyer in the Acosta slot. Isringhausen will be there too, even if they have to put him on the DL to start the season.
|
Edgy DC Mar 24 2011 07:56 AM Re: Projected 2011 Roster |
I'm not ready to call Boyer. Acosta has been as effective and he's a big league deal and out of options, while Boyer is on a minor league deal. The greater crisis is finding a way to hang on to both Izzy and Beato.

Per Rubin, Boyer can opt to become a FA next Thursday.
Lots of tough decisions as we prepare to battle.

Edgy DC Mar 24 2011 08:25 AM Re: Projected 2011 Roster |
Hate those outs. Boo on the outs. Boyer is then in a better position.

Beato, Byrdak, Boyer, Bucholz and Bobby.

The Braves tried (and failed) to sneak lefty pitchers Jose Ortegano and Lee Hyde, seeing them claimed by the Yankees and Nats, respectively. What the Braves are looking for as rosters close, however, was tweeted by AJC sportstweeter Dave O'Brien:
And he followed with a little wocka-wocka.
This has Nick Evans written all over it, no? And Nick is in the lineup at first today, yes? And the Braves system runs deep in the sort of starting pitching the Mets system currently thin on, right?

Four good men going into the last week fighting for two good spots.
A lot can happen in a week, but Izzy may possibly be a luxury the Mets can't afford, roster spot-wise.

Brooklyn guy Beato hanging on out of camp will make this the tenth straight season the Mets have had a Pedro on the roster on Opening Day (Dating back to Astacio in 2002, and spanning the Metly careers of Messrs. Martinez and Feliciano.)
