I'm glad he's there, or somebody, at least. While I sorta disagree with the whole "Most Important Hire Since Frank Cashen" talk*, I'm interested to know what they say and get some perspective on it.

* -- This is what Howie said some writers said. I think Omar needs to get out of the main office but good on his tenure for producing a few promising ballplayers: I hope they don't burn everything.

Re: I.P.C.T. (10/4/10)

I'm not sure about the "since Frank Cashen" part, but it is an important hire. It's very important to get things turned around before this decline accelerates. And we'll need a bright GM in place for 2011, which is going to be a very challenging year.

Edgy DC
Oct 04 2010 09:41 AM
Re: I.P.C.T. (10/4/10)

Yeah, but that much is true of every GM hire or fire. The "most important since Cashen" (and who knew how important he was at the time, huh?) is just hyperbole created to put unreasonable expectations on the Mets and the hiree.

Re: I.P.C.T. (10/4/10)

True. It's rare to change GM's (unless a guy is retiring) when things are going well, so you're always bringing a new guy in at a "crisis" point. The one exceptional thing this time is that the new guy is coming in handcuffed to a lot of bad salaries for 2011, so the more ingenuity he has, the better.

It does mean that he's kinda got a breather year of sorts (albeit a rough-from-a-PR-standpoint one-- "heavy breather," maybe?); 2012 and beyond will be the real tests of his (or her?) stewardship.

Burkhardt tweets he has been at the stadium all morning, get a fucking life, a miserable a place as ever this day I'd say.

This was the first sentence in an article in the NYTimes today -

"An item in a Connecticut newspaper on Sunday said that Jeff Wilpon, Bobby Valentine, Omar Minaya and Wally Backman were seen dining recently at a restaurant in Norwalk called Quattro Pazzi, igniting speculation about the Mets’ future plans until the report was roundly dismissed. "

I read it and immediately started salivating at the prospect of a Bobby V. GM / Wally B. manager combo. The last 5 words did not even register on the first read-through. Then of course...they did. Booo.

Good restaurant though - excellent Chicken Milanese.

Dear Mets Fans:

Thank you for your support during another extremely disappointing season. Like you, all of us at the Mets had high expectations for 2010 and we did not come close to meeting them. Since reaching the National League Championship Series in 2006, we have underperformed. The failure is unacceptable and we share your anguish.

As Ownership, we are ultimately responsible and have determined that changes are necessary to produce a winning team for the long term.

Earlier this morning, we relieved Omar Minaya of his duties as Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations & General Manager, and advised Jerry Manuel that we are declining to exercise the club's option on his contract as Manager for 2011. We appreciate all that Omar and Jerry have done for the Organization and thank them for their time and effort. Changes like these are never easy, especially when dealing with people you like and respect.

We feel a fresh perspective in the leadership of our baseball department will elevate the performance of our club. That person will work with Ownership to hire a new Manager and will be responsible for creating a winning culture.

We have a lot of work to do to regain your confidence and support. Thank you for the opportunity to do so.

Why not? There's no reason to believe he's poisonous, and he is under contract.

Omar speaks:

I think I have been fortunate to have been able to work here. It has been a dream. The only part of the dream that didn't happen was winning a World Series....We had talent, we put talent together. The team has to close it out. We just couldn't get it done.

To Mets fans:
I want to thank the Mets fans. They have been very loyal. The organization [minor leagues] are in good shape. The major league club, the nucleus of the this team, is healthy. The ownership are committed to winning. Thank you for their support. Keep the faith. Keep on believing. Its going to happen. I believe the nucleus of this organization are trying as hard as they can to make it happen. Thank you for the support over the years.

Here is some of Fred Wilpon, in his introduction statement:

?”Our family has owned the Mets for a very long time. We’ve had a lot of good years, and too many poor years. That’s painful. I must say, the last four years have been the most painful to me and probably the most disappointing… ?

I love the New York Mets. I love this franchise. This franchise is part of our family, and our lives… As the Principal Owner and the CEO of this team, I am responsible, I have the last word, the buck stops here and so I take all of the responsibility for the failures on the field or in any other places in this organization… We will hire a new GM, and he will hire the manager and the coaches. His job and the managers job and the staff’s job, with our support, is to win baseball games.”

Good answers on the Madoff situation.

Overall, I think they did a good job with this. Addressed the key issues, were kind to the people they dispatched, took responsibility where they should, admitted the hurt, looked forward. Fred sounds a little too much like Bud Selig, but he does sound better than Jeff.

The name thing just seemed kind of odd to me.

As a funny aside, my father is the head of a company in Florida. He and I have the same first name, but different middle names, so I'm not a junior.

So when I call down there, I ask for him by name, and when the receptionist asks who is calling, and gets the same name, there's always an awkward pause until they remember. I usually have to follow with, ..."his son." But that doesn't always work since my brother works with him.

It wouldn't sound unusual, but --- and you have to read soup's post above --- it is a common enough way of talking for people who work in their father's business.

More interestingly, your sentence ("My father, Mr. Katz and I...") is one of the very special cases where the serial comma before the "and" would have added ambiguity.

Jeff on Citi Field dimensions (paraphrase):
Dimensions were the idea of Omar and his people. We are not closed to the possibility of changing.

"will listen to the new GM about changing the dimensions of Citi Field".....

doesn't sound convincing though , and I hope it doesn't change.

is that true?

It's not only not true, it's ridiculous, since many of his clients were institutions --- such as pension funds and banks --- that would have a hard time discriminating on the basis of creed. He had a lot of connections with Jewish charities and people and bilked the shit out of them. But not just them.

Why are you tuning in to that guy?

I know right , I thought it sounded totally off the wall.

Tuning in because that's where the press conference was.

Tuning out now pops.

Tim Teufel, another prominent Jew bilked by Bernie Madoff.

Interestingly,Ollie Perez was signed within weeks of the Madoff arrest.

This strikes me as a little bit shitty, or at least not a bit magnanimous.

Pretty sure he said that they were all involved in that thought process but yeah he did say that Omar and hsi people wasnted a stadium for pitching, defense and speed.... sounded shitty that he laid it right there.

It would if there was something terribly wrong with the dimensions, but there isn't.

Teufel is Christian of an evangelical stripe.

Well, no-- it's shitty because the dimensions are perceived as a design flaw. It doesn't matter whether they actually constitute one.

They're not pereceived that way by me. They don't seem to be perceived that way by Jeff Wilpon.

And yes, I know about Teufel. I was making my point about Francessa through the judicious exercise of irony.

I hope they don't hire a GM who's grand idea is "Hey, let's move in the fences!" That doesn't speak to me as a guy who's got a real solid plan for the future.

I guess I wouldn't be totally opposed to moving them in a handful of feet if need be, but I kinda like the park as it. In fact, I think the park can be rather intimidating at times to other teams who may stumble into Goose Egg sweeps.

Flipped on Francessa a bit before, figured talking Mets so i'd listen, see what's up. less time consuming than constantly refreshing twitter instead of working, but he was too annoying going on like he knows what season tickets holders are going to do and how they think and what Mets fans want.

No, although, from what I've read, he did use the 'you can trust me because I'm one of you' sales pitch when targeting potential Jewish clients.

The caller IIRC had mentioned how hurt Fred was by Madoff, I believe Fred said something to that effect during the conference.

What's funny is how certain Francesa is when he says things.

Maybe the most brazen Francesa 'I know more than you' moment came on 9/11
As a Long Island resident he was the only one who could get in that day w/o needing a bridge so he took over directly from Imus's extended show that day and solo-ed throughout the afternoon. Obviously it wasn't a day to discuss sports but Mike, never one to limit his own expertise to just one area, didn't hesitate to tell his listening audience about how there was no doubt that the Pennsylvania plane was shot down by our government to prevent further damage and it's only a matter of time before those facts came to light and the rest of us were told what he already knew.
