Paddy Power Odds

Perspective new GM for the floundering other NY baseball team seeing leaving Paddy Power's

Sandy Alderson - 2/1
Despite being named Sandy the Mets like this guy, a former kick ass Marine sergeant who is currently in the Dominican Republic leading a counter-insurgency and trying to win the hearts and minds of the people too....

Rick Hahn - 4/1
Nine years a bridesmaid.....to a black guy ...fuck sake how good can he be?.....

Jerry Dipoto - 5/1
Looks like something your emo daughter would drag home after cutting herself

Logan White - 10/1
Sounds more LA than NY.....likes to go for long strolls on the beach looking for talent , good luck with that in Flushing

Eddie Bane - 20/1
With the Angels he had thing called "The Bane Connection"...., sounds like just what fred would go for

Dan Jennings - 30/1
In his spare time Dan is a professional Taxidermist, perfect with the expiring contracts the Mets have coming up....
http://taxidermist.com/2010/07/intervie ... -jennings/

Jon Daniels - 35/1
When not touring as Marilyn Manson he might find time to fix the pen

Josh Byrnes - 40/1
Would love to bring his loser mentality to Queens

Terry Ryan - 8/1- odds dropped are some heavy overseas betting
The smart money is on Ryan, the Irish are placing large bets on him

The Other - Odds pending

I voted "other".
But I have no bloody idea who else I would want.
I'll have to read more about their credentials.

EDIT: OK, I know who I would like, Pat Gillick. He's now working for the Phillies.
Yeah, I know. When he was in Seattle, we heard that he hated the Mets and was always trying to fuck them in deals.
Gillick wasn't trying to fuck them. He was just a better GM than any GM he was talking to.
As a result, he was able to fuck them.
But I don't think it was out of a hatred for the team.

As Michael Corleone said, "It was business, Sonny, not personal."

If the Mets can get permission from the Phillies to talk to him, I'd do it. He has built contenders in Toronto and Philadelphia.

Re: New General Manager Poll

Will Alderson do, like, song-and-dance or slapstick at the press conferences?

I could go a bunch of ways with this.

I'll put 40 on Alderson (I suspect the odds will be dropping further), with a tenner kicker on Daniels.

Revised Odds

Alderson - 1/2 on

Hahn - 5/1

Daniels is the big mover here - 6/1 without and interview folks.....get your money down now at these odds

Byrnes - interviewed very well, dazzled with the Sabr stuff as Jeff calls it - 10/1

White....interviewing today....was seen on the town last night, might be looking a bit rough......20/1

Baird - 30/1

Paddy is referring to Daniels' remarks when asked about the job by the visiting NY press corps yesterday. He apparently couldn't conceal his MLBSness, and the fact that his mom would be thrilled. Now what kid likes to disappoint his Mom like that?

Hopefully, though, Daniels won't be free to talk to the Mets until after the World Series. (I do like seeing "Mets" and "World Series" in the same sentence!) If it is going to be Daniels, he might not be able to be in place until well into November. (Of course, if things go poorly, the Rangers might be done in less than a week.)

Re: New General Manager Poll

One thing that throws a wrench into the works of timing is that the 'grace period' where potential FAs can talk only to their own team has been reduced from 15 days after the end of the WS down to just 5 so the FA season starts up much quicker this year.
Of course Ricco is acting GM and can certainly handle whatever questions come up between now and whenever but you would like to see the permanent guy in place before all the big fur starts to fly.

I hope that the next GM will take the small out of the Mets' ball. This Wee Willie Keeler style of baseball has been so entrenched here ever since Wilpon bought out Doubleday, that sometimes I wonder if it isn't Fred or Jeff or the both of them that are insisting on this unfortunate tactic.

Anthony DiComo is tweeting that the Mets asked for and were denied permission to interview Tigers assistant Al Aliva.

Aliva has previously interviewed with the Reds, Orioles, Mariners, and Diamondbacks, and is a name that gets a lot of mileage because of the mandate that minority candidates get interviewed.

Some pretty deep baseball roots

His son is a catcher for the Tigers

Personal

His father, Al Avila, is the assistant general manager and a vice president with the Detroit Tigers.
Also attended De La Salle Collegiate High School for a time in Warren, Michigan.[2]
Avila's godfather is Tommy Lasorda, the longtime former manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Avila's grandfather, Ralph Avila, was a longtime scout for the Dodgers, and has known Lasorda for over 50 years. Alex's middle name of "Thomas" is named for Lasorda.[3]

Theo Epstein on Baird:

“We put him in charge of minor league free agency, and he did an outstanding job coming up with Nick Green one year and Darnell McDonald the next year,” Epstein said. “Anything he touches, you know you are going to get incredible competence and thoroughness and a great evaluator’s touch. He’s been a central part of everything we’ve done since ’06, including the ’07 championship.”

Personally, I think the Mets do a decent job finding guys on the scrapheap. What I don't like is that they have been so wedded to their plan that they don't give fringe guys a chance to break through.

He also endorsed Josh Byrnes.

“The thing that stands out with Josh is his tremendous intelligence,” Epstein said. “He understands the financial landscape of the game, the economics of the game; he understands the dynamic of the clubhouse, the relationships with the manager and the coaching staff, the minor leagues. He just gets it, and he understands the big picture as well as the details. Everything put together, it’s a pretty compelling package.”

Matthew Artus of the Star-Ledger is a bit concerned about the guy the Mets will presumably hire as their next GM:

"Should the Mets coerce Alderson to become the Answer to all the questions left behind by Omar Minaya, they would also make him the oldest General Manager in the game by 4 years . . . When I look around the front offices of MLB now and see the young guns like Theo Epstein of Boston, Jon Daniels of Texas, or Andrew Friedman of Tampa Bay succeeding where the Mets perpetually fail, my first instinct emphasizes the age. It’s not because I need their agile frames to hit fastballs, but rather the youthful perspective that can ideally inject some life into a morose franchise.
Artus goes on to wonder if the Mets aren’t simply hiring a big name to appease fans as opposed to finding “the next great baseball GM.”

This seems off to me. Sure, the trend is to find a young guy with a fresh perspective, but a pretty strong argument can be made that every single one of the guys Artus names above — and indeed, every new GM in the past decade or so — is either a direct or at least an intellectual heir to Sandy Alderson.

Baseball’s young guns? In a sense, Alderson taught them all. He was the first of the new breed of ivy league guys who rejected the old conventional wisdom and thought it a positive thing, as opposed to a threat, to surround himself with the best and brightest he could find. The Mets should hire someone from “the new breed?” Alderson bred them for cryin’ out loud. He’s Yoda to their Luke. He’s Ramius to their Tupolev. He’s Felson to their Lauria.

We should worry about this choice? Damn, man, this is the first time in ages the Mets seem to be set on making the absolute best choice possible. Let’s give them credit for it rather than wring our hands.

I don't really care if the next guy believes in WAR or BABiP. I just want him to approach the job as a science and not an art. Because art is beautiful when it works, but it can be haphazard, it's often best when everybody uses a different method, and it's not measurealble, and therefore makes accountability a mess.

Alderson was a pioneer in bringing science, measurablility, and accountability to the baseball front office. I don't know if the game has passed him by, but anybody who doesn't use the word "gut" is welcome to work for my team.

Alderson returns to Seaver Stadium today for further discussons. He's looking like a fait accompli.

Dumb thought: one of Alderson's assignments for MLB was to tackle the chain of exploitaiton and fraud among Dominican buscones. Will the enemies he's maid there hurt the Mets ability to acquire Dominican amateur talent?

Doesn't exactly answer your question, but if the Mets Dominican recruitment is hurt because our GM is frozen out by the corrupt and exploitative, I'd be glad to take the hit as opposed to getting back in bed with those guys, even if the other franchises don't have similar perspective.

Dear Mets Fans:

As you may know, earlier today we completed the initial round of interviews with six talented candidates to become the new General Manager of the New York Mets.

Each was extremely impressive - Allard Baird, Rick Hahn, Josh Byrnes, Sandy Alderson, Logan White, and Dana Brown. All reiterated their desire and interest in pursuing this opportunity.

We will be in direct communication with each as we narrow the candidate pool by early next week. We subsequently will invite the leading candidates back to meet with Fred, Saul, and me.

We have an outstanding group from which to select our new General Manager. We look forward to sharing more information with you soon.

Sincerely,

Jeff Wilpon
