They probably were an ideal U.S. ally at the time also, having overthrown two dictators, with the overthrowing junta establishing free elections, followed by a government that modeled its policies on the New Deal, and became an anti-Soviet partner.

Of course, then we turned around by 1954 and orchestrated that government's successor for being too socialist, fucking up the country with a metaphorical case of the clap for decades. We owe them a much bigger apology than this.
