THE SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE YEAR

PLAYER OF THE YEAR
The Schaefer Mets Player of the Year for 2010 is DAVID WRIGHT. This is the fifth time David has won in the six years that the Crane Pool Forum has been maintaining the Schaefer tradition. Wright led the 2010 Mets in games (157), at bats (587), runs (87), doubles (36), home runs (29), runs batted in (103), caught stealing (11), slugging (.503), on base percentage (.354), total bases (295), sac flies (12), intentional walks (7), and his 161 strikeouts broke a record set by Dave Kingman back in 1982.

PITCHER OF THE YEAR
The Schaefer Mets Pitcher of the Year, for the third year in a row, is JOHAN SANTANA. Johan led the Mets in only two categories: complete games (4) and shutouts (2). Santana, whose season ended on September 2, finished at 11-9 with a 2.98 ERA. He finished less than 9 points ahead of R.A. Dickey, who led the Mets in ERA (2.84) and Mike Pelfrey, the Mets 15-game winner. Dickey, of course, didn't debut with the Mets until May 19, and Pelfrey was virtually shut out of Schaefer points in July, when he went 0-3 with a 10.02 ERA over 5 starts.

RELIEF PITCHER OF THE YEAR
The Mets reliever of the year is HISANORI TAKAHASHI. Takahashi totaled 52.48 points overall, but 23.67 of those points came as a starter. His 28.81 points from the bullpen were enough to outscore Pedro Feliciano (26.37) and Francisco Rodriguez, the team save leader, who scored 26.15. Takahashi saved 8 games for the Mets. In 41 games in relief, he was 6-2 in 57.1 innings, with an ERA of 2.04.

FUN FACTS
The highest point total earned by any one player in 2010 was the 5.99 and it was done twice: by Jon Niese on June 10 and by Johan Santana on July 6.

The lowest "winning score" was the 0.70 that Jason Bay was awarded on May 1, in a 10-0 loss to Philadelphia.

The most Schaefer Player of the Game awards went to Johan Santana, with 21. Strangely, players such as Ruben Tejada and Oliver Perez were Player of the Game more often than Jose Reyes.

Special congratulations to Takahashi. He earned it. Congratulations to all releivers for surviving Jerry and getting no respect for it.

It feels like there should be some sort of postseason support group for the 'penners-- with Pedro as group leader-- doesn't it?

Yeah, thrilled that Takahashi pulled out that reliever award.

In the Non-Schaeffer World, I 'd say we got 2 of 3 correct. (I kinda like Dickey over Johan slightly)

I kinda like Pagan over Wright. But we don't score the daily defensive contributions as aggressively, I gather.

And that's partly due to after-the-fact/straight-from-the-box-score voting, I'd imagine.

That's the biggest reason why I don't vote as much as I do. If I haven't seen some chunk of the game -- even just a few innings -- I usually don't vote because I'm afraid I'm leaving off a big double play or sac bunt (HA!) or something.

Re: SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE YEAR 2010

Even in such cases, I try to catch the video on mets.com, and award excellence accordingly.

But the day-to-day stuff --- where (to mine eyes) Pagan is a very-good-to-excellent centerfielder and Wright merely a fair third baseman --- hasn't been well represented in my voting, I'm afraid.

Re: SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE YEAR 2010

i think the most difficult thing for schaeffer-voting to capture is rangeyness for defenders, particularly the lack of range. rangey outfielders may get rewarded for getting to na unlikely ball, but a ball that a rangey of could get to, but an unrangey of cannot is rarely counted against him. ditto for infielders, though that may be more readily determined.

like any ball which subsequently shall land within 3' of a dugout railing. we can surely say from now on that ike woulda got it, so those should be accounted for by those non-ikes who do not get it.

It is a shame, though, that Angel didn't win any monthly awards this year and thereby didn't get his card in the array-o-winners up above.

I'll give him an honorable shout-out here:

It also looks like the 1977 Topps series got skipped over, too.

Re: SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE YEAR 2010

i'd like to stand up and preemptively come out in favor of the notion that schaeffer voting does not necessarily fall in line with conventional value assessments of players. the schaeffer player of the year need not be the most WARest, or WPAest, or wOBAest, or win sharest (are win shares relevent still, or have we moved past them?) player.

i like that it offers a relativistic look at the sum total of player of the game contributions.

it is a unique look at player performance. who cares if it doesn't account for a guy single handedly blowing a 9 run lead in the 9th. it doesn't need to. it measures, instead, how often and how much a player contributes to winning individual games.

i like it for that.

david wright contributed more and more often to winning games than did any other metly player. i can live with that.

do we not adequately capture defensive and relieving contributions? eh, maybe. but that's a different argument.

Yes, Schaefer is definitely a throwback measurement, based on a promotional gimmick from the 1970's.

Re: SCHAEFER METS PLAYERS OF THE YEAR 2010

Pagan's total WAR for 2010 is 4.7. David Wright's offensive WAR is 4.7 -- but Wright's defensive WAR is -0.8, bringing his total WAR to 3.9.

The rookie cup sucked. The trophy is the only way to go.
Artistic license says going with the trophy no matter the year is totally acceptable, and even super kool for the cup years.

I see that the tall Topps big trophy with the batter on top is going to cause all sorts of historical havoc: that trophy includes the year when the rookie award was issued. So even if you give Ike a new card, consistent with the years when Topps used the big batter trophy, like say a 1972 card for example, the year "2010" should be "engraved" on Ike's trophy -- and 2010 would be inconsistent with whatever baseball card template you would use for Ike's new card. So don't bother. You might blow up the world or something, like when some time traveler goes back in time to a date before he was born and kills his grandfather. Just play it safe and put a cup trophy on Ike's '76.
