Yanx/Rangers ALCS IST

Frayed Knot
Oct 15 2010 04:49 PM

The ALCS kicks off tonight with CC Sabathia and CJ Wilson in the ... wait for it ... initial matchup.

Hopefully the Rangers KO CC ASAP which puts the Yanx in a hole and force them to rely on AJ or become DOA

At least it was the correct call. The folks who would be storming the gates if the blue had blown that one would have been looking at my ass as they went because I would have been ahead of all of y'all.
Thing is, once that bounce came right back to him, even two slugs as slow as Posada & Sabathia were able to pull that one off.

btw, Girardi showing how to use your pen when you're down early in the game: Bring in your bottom half relievers first, then if they hold the other team to where they were you hope your offense comes back and if those chumps let up tack-on runs then you weren't going to win the game anyway.
But if they do hold them and your team comes back you still have your top guys to shut down the end of the game.

Sadly, Jerry never learned this tactic.

Why, if the Mets were to pull this game out, like the MFYs just did, that game might even get more airplay than the Matt Franco pinch hit single game (which we'll always have).

All right people, buck up now. It's just one game. The Yankees have won as many as three games to start a series and still failed to win the series. Besides, this was the game the Yankees were supposed to win with "greatest pitcher in the world" C.C. on the mound. So the Rangers have learned that C.C. is human and they've tired out the Yankees bullpen. Granted the Rangers bullpen was well-used to but they've got better starters coming up. I have cahnfidence that evil will not be allowed to triumph. Go Rangers!

That Smoltz (and to a lesser extent Darling) praised the idea isn't helping.

And now Washington is proven correct as the following double gets the runner in. No way Cruz could have scored from 2nd on a 2-bagger.

And now Texas pouring on the hits which means the only thing the bunt got them was one fewer out to work with going forward.

I guess I'd appreciate the short end of the stick he gives the Yankee fans every night if (1) the Mets season wasn't so utterly completely over, and (2) I hadn't really really soured on Howie and Wayne this season.

Re: Yanx/Rangers ALCS IST

Eh. I think the MFYs are secretly embarrassed at Sterling's schtick and probably wish instead for a self-righteous homer bully who pretends he's a journalist like, for instance, their TV guy, Michael Kay.

Sterling's partner is irritating former Broadway singer turned radio personality Suzyn Waldman. Her voice can kill, she rarely "times" her remarks properly and her reading of the starting lineup is the most torturous 2 minutes in radio, but I'd say 90% of the mainstream shit she gets is because she's a girl, and how do you say this? Not Ines Sainz or even Jenn Sterger.

I've softened my own take on Waldman while holding the above to be true. I think she occasionally can come up with an interesting perspective, and I feel kinda bad for her what with all the "ugly bitch" remarks she inspires.

There was a third person in the booth. Real nasally little squirty male. It was almost like his job was to keep feeding Sterling facts so Sterling could kick them aside with ex cathedra pronouncements. I dunno, maybe they're mic-ing the producer or statistician or somebody.

I fear for Ms. Waldman's future in the post-Steinbrenner world. Her presence seemed to be one of his novelties. On the other hand, firing her is like admitting they were wrong all along and they certainly can't give her a smaller on-air role.

Re: Yanx/Rangers ALCS IST

I've been away in the Poconos for the past few days, and was forced to listen to the Yanks broadcast on the way up yesterday (my wife's a Yankee fan). Even putting aside Sterling's most hideously smarmy, schticky homerisms, he's one of the poorest technical broadcasters I can think of. He does nothing to elucidate the details of the game; pitch locations, defensive shifts... even how hard a ball is hit or how close a play may be. Whatever small morsels of detail may be provided are delivered after the fact, so you have to piece the action together well after its conclusion.

In addition, he clearly doesn't care to do his homework... he has nothing more to say about Jeff Francouer other than that he's a "righty with power," the very same description he uses for Jorge Cantu or Ian Kinsler (who, to be fair, is "a right-hander with power and speed"). For some of these players, it's not even that he hasn't done his homework, because he's seen them enough to know their strengths, weaknesses, and tendencies, were he at all interested or perceptive. Overall, may as well watch Gameday for your insight.

I don't deny that I've been coddled with above average Mets broadcasts on the radio and exceptional broadcasts on television (and formerly the reverse), but I've also been privy to the skills of other teams' broadcasters and, even when doing my best to put aside my anti-Yank bias, the Yanks' radio team still deserves to be canned. Sterling's got the job as long as he wants it though, I'm sure.

Well I probably couldn't pick Wayne Hagin out of a lineup either (mainly because he's relatively new and is on the RADIO) but that doesn't mean I know nothing about him.

Besides, John Sterling has been on NY radio in one form or another for some 40 years now (with breaks in between - he did both Braves & NBA Hawks games in Atlanta for years). He dates back to New York Nets basketball, was an early Islander radio voice (Islander goal, Islander goal was said with the same cadence as Yankees win, Yankees win), and was a sports talk radio host (WMCA) before sports talk radio as a 24 hour enterprise was even a thought in anyone's mind. And Waldman, for all her limitations, is now into her third decade on NY sports radio on two of the most powerful stations (WFAN & WABC) on the east coast.

Too bad Texas is too far away otherwise we'd have a similar deal to Game 7/'04 when, by the end of the game, the vacated expensive seats were entirely populated with Red Sox fans.
I'm not sure the eight or so Rangers fans who came to NY for this series would make quite the same visual or audible impact.

Either the Yanx feel that their $10mil set-up guy is too delicate to go more than one inning or that he's untrustworthy against lefties to the point where they have more confidence in some scrub LOOGY.

Have a Dallas native visiting the office this week, and when I asked her whether she had plans for yesterday evening, she mentioned that she was a "BIG baseball fan," and would likely be staying in the hotel to watch (lest she get harassed by MFY faithful in a local bar). I recommended a few non-MFY bars for her, and suggested she go out to catch it, since Cliffy was pitching. I also casually asked if she thought that Borbon and Francoeur should start at the corners, since defense might be key with Lee on the mound. Blank stare for about five seconds, then polite, "Maybe, yeah... I don't know."

So, yeah... obviously a diehard. Enjoy your moose antlers and whatnot, lady.

I am SO PISSED that this series isn't 3-0 at this point.

Re: Yanx/Rangers ALCS IST

That's the problem with having networks working baseball's post-season: it makes too much financial sense for them to put to work these guys from other sports that they've already got on the payroll. But when non-baseball folks do baseball it shows - and if they happen to be doing your team it shows even more.
What would be the best listen would be for them to hire a couple of whoever they think are the best local announcers (Gary or one of his counterparts) and assign them to their own league's game. If they want to steer them away from their "own" team just to avoid charges of bias that's fine with me but at least you'd get guys who not only know the game better but know the players as well.

But there's nothing worse than your generic network jock trying to pretend he knows - or, in some cases, cares about - baseball. You can just tell that some of those geeks are so anxious to be doing something else that they jump all over the inevitable network promo as their big opportunity to change the subject: "College Football coming up this Saturday at 7 PM ... So how 'bout them State U. Cougars?!"

Darling's explanation of why they didn't go to the film was unsatisfying also.
They're showing a graphic that says replay is usable for fan interference calls but then Ronnie is saying that they can't because, in the judgement of the RF ump, the ball was over the fence. But two minutes later the same ump judged that Berkman's ball was fair and that got reversed.

I'm not sure that the Cano one would have been overturned anyway, but I don't understand why they didn't at look give it a look.

Whoda thought that Angel Hernandez would be on the field and the talk is about a different umpire ... although there have been some odd ball/strike calls.

How exactly does "GBA" honor our men and women serving in the armed forces overseas? I don't mean that in the philosophical sense concerning patriotic gestures or as a rhetorical political question. What in that song has anything to do with "we wish you the best, we appreciate your putting yourself at risk, we hope you make it back safe"?

And "oceans white with foam" as rhyme for "my home sweet home" gets no more than a C- once you're in seventh grade.

Re: Yanx/Rangers ALCS IST

nothing makes me hate that song more than listening to it sung at yankee stadium. i don;t know what it is, but that venue makes the song suddenly offensive to me.

Hear it the way I hear it:

God Bless America (the country that convicted George Steinbrenner of illegal laundering money into a presidential campaign)!
Land (whose Congress was held in contempt by Roger Clemens and subsequently indicted the big liar for it) that I love!
Stand beside her (the country that Derek Jeter woefully failed in the World Baseball Classic)
And guide her(the country whose lowlifes have adopted the Yankee cap as thugware of choice)
Thru the night with a light from above!
From the mountains, to the prairies,
To the oceans, white with foam
God bless America
(the land where even now, sick, hostile, and malicous forces are twisting the truth to turn Yankee-related vice into virtue)!
My home sweet home!

O'Connor does a great job, capturing the mood of the avalanche of Yankee fans rushing to jump off the bandwagon, flee the stadium, quit, and declare that they never believed in this team anyway, all the while decrying the team's lack of heart. It's a pretty spectacular performance by the "diehards."

He's dead wrong about the manager, though. The failure there is Burnett's, not Girardi's, unless you want to hang Girardi for having Burnett in there in the first place, which isn't what he's saying.

well, he's not nose-deep in pinstriped short curlies like they're used to hearing whensoever their precious team is involved, but he's hardly anti-yankee. last night i heard him laud cano's play at second, declaring him the deserving AL gold glover for his position (which isn't entirely well supported by the numbers). it also didn't seem at all like he was disputing the cano home run outcome, and seemed to not be in favor of the umps missing the bases-loaded hit pantsleg, on swisher iirc, in the 8th.

at worst, it sounded like he was in favor of either team last night.

That's hilarious. He's been about as fair to them as he is to the Mets. They're just likely unused to non-YES broadcasters who actually know enough about their team to honestly and fairly (if not altogether accurately) assay their chances, abilities and doings... and practicing bitching about something else, now that they will shortly be unable to bitch about an actual, still-playing baseball team.

The O'Connor piece made me think of that, and I'm sure that if (if) the MFYs don't advance but show any kind of pulse in the process of not advancing, we'll read variations on this, and how in the end they did themselves proud, because when you get right down to it, it's not who wins a single series that's important, it's who's won dozens of them.

Yeah, O'Connor is arguing against the IW and doing so on the basis that Molina is clutch, an RBI guy, and has it in his bloodlines. It's an arguable point but ya gotta do a little better than that dude.
I personally had no problems with the IW that got rid of the LH hitter in favor of Molina. Whether Burnett should have been the guy to pitch to him (esp after almost throwing away one of the pitchouts during the IW) is a separate issue. Joba was warmed up and ready to come in at that point although when he did finally get in the following inning he went 2B - BB - 1B to the first three batters he faced so it's not like there's a guarantee that bringing him in would have gone smoothly either.

Lotta chatter on my FB page from MFY fans that Ron Darling has been insufferably anti-Yankee. anybody who has been watching can confirm this?

The fans of every team complain that network announcers are skewed against their guys - usually simultaneously. That Darling is a 'Mets' guy only adds fuel to the fire because they're convinced he comes in with a bias. Met fans might be almost universally convinced that the likes of McCarver and Morgan do nothing but suck MFY dicks all day but I haven't met a Bronx fan yet who didn't think both of them were more anti-Yanqui than Hugo Chavez.

Thames hit alright this year and has some power which makes him kind of a run-of-the-mill DH. And, for the most part, that's pretty much what DHs are these days. Except for Papi and maybe one or two others, the days of the really high-priced slugger in that position are gone. Even vets like Thome & Vlad are on contracts that are way down from their peaks.

Of course Thames is really just one of about four MFY DHs. They started with Nick Johnson but he got hurt (surprise!!). Then they went to Thames whenever Posada wasn't hurt or ARod wasn't getting a day off. But that wasn't enough so they traded for both Austin Kearns (who has suddenly disappeared - is he even on the playoff roster?) & Berkman at the trade deadline. Berkman was doing the DHing against RHPs but is now pressed into service at 1B with Teixeira's injury.

* First he bitched about how the Yankees can't hit Colby Lewis, so I pointed out that Lewis had a better 2010 than anyone on the Yankee staff not named CC or Mariano.

* Then he bitched that it was only because he pitches in the worst division in the majors, at which point I reminded him about the O's and Jays.

* Then he asked how many runs Lewis gave up, as though that were some indication of suck. He gave up 21 this year; less than Vazquez, Burnett, or Hughes, and only one more than Sabathia.

* Then he bitched about starting Marcus Thames against a righty; only Thames was better against righties this year.

* Now he's bemoaning the loss of Matsui and Damon, who apparently weren't necessary when they won 95 games this year, but all of a sudden...

I'm getting this from Yankee fans, too. Matsui and Damon were the "heart" this team lacks.

I've got bookends with more heart than Damon.

Someone should tell Swisher that having more quotes than hits in a post-season series is not exactly what you want - and that if he wants to kick Cliff Lee's ass looks that he's going to have to wait until next spring sometime.

Michael Kay said on Thursday that if you're a real baseball fan, you want the Yankees to win Game 6 because Game 7's are so great. Don LaGreca said that he hates the Yankees and wants them to lose in 6. Kaye was incredulous. I love baseball, I'm loving this game, and will be very happy if there isn't a Game 7 in this series.
