Giants vs. Phillies -- NLCS IST

Great old-fashioned pitching duel between Lincecum and Halladay will be perfect as, thanks to Cablevision and Fox, I will be taking it in on a staticky AM broadcast.

Re: Giants vs. Phillies -- NLCS IST

TBS was doing those taped/between-inning chats too the other day, as does ESPN during their Sunday Night telecasts - although the purpose of that seems to be to show off how tight Joe Morgan is with whoever they're chatting with.
The bottom line is that those gab-fests are rarely if ever illuminating ["So, your guy looks to be throwing his fastball real good tonight" ... "Yeah, he's throwing his fastball read good"] but the powers at be seem to think they're indispensable to the point where if they wind up stepping on a big live moment so be it.

Things I just realized yesterday:
- Even with the longer series, Barry Zito was once again left off the SF roster for this round. Granted he was the 5th wheel on a team with their pitching but his season wasn't THAT bad and it seems to me he could come in useful if the staff gets in a spot, although I guess they felt like they needed more 'true' relievers and with the rate Bochy's going through his pen they're probably right.
- Cody Ross is one of those lefty throwing/righty swinging oddities.

With 4 Ks and 2 baserunners allowed through 3, Matt Cain is Santa Cruzin'.

Unfortunately, so far, so is Ol' Two-Power... who's faced the minimum number of hitters through 3. That's right, he's got a no-hitter so far. No-hitters in the playoffs are rare, so it would be an acheivement for him to match his teammate's no-hitter with a no-hitter of his own.

On radio, one of the announcers quipped that Wilson led the NL with 48 saves, then added that he made his manager nervous in 46 of them.
The other guy (Soup Campbell?) added (a close paraphrase) "That's like when Earl Weaver had Tim Stoddard closing for him. He would go through an entire pack of cigarettes during the ninth inning."

Re: Giants vs. Phillies -- NLCS IST

The notinon of stress-free saves are an illusion, the pursuit of which has caused an endless number of counterproductive personnel decisions.

Brian Wilson has stressed his manager all the way to the brink of the World Series.

You want stress-free baseball, study yoga and meditation, and pursue detachment. Achiefe a state in which you overcome your attachment to desire for things, people, or concepts of the world and thus attain a heightened perspective.

Don't rag on your closer. Or, God help me, your "eighth-inning guy."

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr
Oct 20 2010 10:12 AM
Re: Giants vs. Phillies -- NLCS IST

Well, to be fair, Bochy's not ragging on the closer.

"To be fair" part two: Wilson's part of the 80 percent of closers who actually do put runners on base more often than not (7+ hits/9, 3+ BB/9). [To rebut that bit, though: he's also had his most dominant year in the saddle during each those 48 "shaky" saves, and his K-rates have climbed each of the last three seasons to a Ryan-y 11.2 K/9 this year.]

Edgy DC
Oct 20 2010 10:30 AM
Re: Giants vs. Phillies -- NLCS IST

Well, I wasn't speaking of Bochy per se, but those like the two announcers intellectually putting themselves in the place of those managers, and holding those closers responsible for stress created.

Cigarettes, saves... a jedi craves not these things.

Vic Sage
Oct 20 2010 10:44 AM
Re: Giants vs. Phillies -- NLCS IST

i think it's interesting to look at closers in terms of their WHIP, to derive some sort of "alka seltzer" quotient.

Going back the last 3 seasons, only 1 pitcher in baseball has gotten over 30 saves per season, with a WHIP of 1.00 of less each of those years (I bet you can guess who!). In addition to the inimitable Mr. Rivera, Joe Nathan has done it 2 of the last 3 seasons (he was on the DL this year -- go Seawolves!). Even if you lower the floor to 25 saves a season, you only add Billy Wagner and the unsung Andrew Bailey, who've both done it 2 of the last 3 seasons. So, yes, its a ridiculously small percentage of closers who can consistently be counted on to give you a clean 9th inning. And holding all relievers up to that standard will inevitably cause agita, to managers and fans alike.

And far worse than agita, such unrealistic expectations by management can lead (as Edgy has already noted) to disastrous personnel decisions.

Frayed Knot
Oct 20 2010 10:52 AM
Re: Giants vs. Phillies -- NLCS IST

As I pointed out in another thread a month or two back, less than 1/3 of all saves (1-inning saves anyway) are done with perfect 1-2-3 innings. So, going on the idea that a baserunner - any baserunner: via walk, hit, HR, etc. - makes a fan nervous in a 1, 2, or 3 run game, then "nervous" is much closer to the norm than the exception.

Agreed on the general point... but Wilson's 1.17 WHIP this year was actually his career low by a LOT, and lowered his career baserunners-per-IP to just under 1.3. Which is closer to major-league average for everybody than for end-of-game/setup relievers.

Vic Sage
Oct 20 2010 12:36 PM
Re: Giants vs. Phillies -- NLCS IST

i wasn't commenting on Wilson in particular.
And, of course, you could use whatever cutoff for WHIP that one can make a logical argument for.

But what i think is interesting is the general lack of consistency you'll find among even the "best" closers, in terms of their annual WHIP, even if they're consistently getting 25+ saves a year. The point is that too many fans, managers and general managers overvalue the "closer", because its as much a function of opportunity and luck as it is any particular moral virtue. With the rare exception of Mr. Rivera in the current era, even the best ones can cause stress, because they are most likely pitching the last inning of a close game.

which is why tying up big $$ in guys who pitch 50 innings a year is stupid... stupid as a bunt.

Edgy DC
Oct 20 2010 12:50 PM
Re: Giants vs. Phillies -- NLCS IST

And nobody churns stomache acid over the saves the other teams' closers pile up.

So you look at Francisco Rodriguez, you see him break 60 saves, and it's all good.

Then you drop a ton of money signing him and things are different.

Yeah, I thought that was a bit premature also. He was having some trouble there in the 5th, but I would have trusted him to get one more out and his replacement only made it worse.
This might have been the type of game where you could go to Zito for a few innings.

Yeah, but Davey Johnson certainly heard it for going to Gooden out of the pen in 1988. That "unfamiliar with relieving/out of his element/not on his usual rest" angle.

Yeah, but Oswalt's usual throw day was yesterday, if I'm counting right (started last Sunday, starting again this weekend if necessary).

And also, we were all a little stupider then.

Re: Giants vs. Phillies -- NLCS IST

The only snag in the 'yesterday was Oswalt's throw day' logic is that he had already done his throwing earlier. Usually if you're going to use a pitcher in those circumstances you delay his throwing so as to keep him fresher.

That said, some writers were trying to hang Cholly with the logic that his willingness to use Oswalt clashed with his earlier decision to NOT go with Halladay (and by extension everyone else) on short rest and skip Blanton all together - I guess based on the assumption that if he's going to act desperate he should have done so earlier. I don't buy that.

Re: Giants vs. Phillies -- NLCS IST

It was a logical move to go with Oswalt. If the game stays tied for several innings, you'd like to use a starter there. Then, if you take the lead, you bring in your closer.

Re: Giants vs. Phillies -- NLCS IST

I just think he should use his better relievers first, while he still has a few batters to hit for them if their turn comes around. Go for a starter when you're ready to use him for a three-four inning stretch --- either for a third inning bailout or an extra inning war of attrition.

Verbal slapfight between Sanchez and Utley after some post-HBP weirdness (Sanchez hit him after walking La Cabeza Grande; ball bounced in front of Utley as he ran to first; Utley scooped it and tossed it to Sanchez; Sanchez got pissy and Utley got dismissive and cursed at him). Sanchez gave way-- by Bochy fiat, not umpire decision-- to Affeldt, who worked his way out of the two-on, nobody-out dilemma left him.

Turning out to look pretty prescient on Bochy's part.

In game action... a cheeky/cheap Renteria attempt to sell a "HBP" (really, a foul tip) is futile, and he ends up grounding into a funkily-turned 4-3 DP to end the inning/rally.

Steve Phillips in 2000 made up a rule that said any player who had been a Met in 2000, wasn't there by the end of the season and then went to the playoffs with another team that year was ineligible for a league champions ring. The only player who met that criteria was Rickey Henderson, who left on bad terms (of his own making, I might add). Phillips was asked if this was a Rickey rule specifically. After dancing around it a couple of time, he said, yeah.

But Molina will get at least that much from Texas. And bless him for earning it.
