2010's Last IGT - 106th World Series: San Francisco v Texas

Willets Point
Oct 25 2010 03:13 PM

I'm actually excited about the World Series for the first time in a couple of years. First of all, there's the absence of evil in the World Series for the first time since 2007. Then there's the fact that history will be made in that either the Rangers will win their first World Series ever or the Giants will win their first World Series since moving to San Francisco. Oh and the NL has home field advantage for once (and the more attractive ballpark).

Here's the schedule:

Gm 1 TEX @ SF Wed Oct. 27 7:30 PM
Gm 2 TEX @ SF Thu Oct. 28 7:30 PM
Gm 3 SF @ TEX Sat Oct. 30 6:30 PM !
Gm 4 SF @ TEX Sun Oct. 31 8:00 PM
Gm 5* SF @ TEX Mon Nov. 1 7:30 PM
Gm 6* TEX @ SF Wed Nov. 3 7:30 PM
Gm 7* TEX @ SF Thu Nov. 4 7:30 PM

Can someone remind me what the rationale behind switching the opening day of the WS from Saturday to Wednesday a few years ago was? Why would MLB want to go up against Monday Night Football?

Like Willets I am very much looking forward to this WS, it's on FOX?, if so then maybe I won't see it at all.

Re: 2010's Last IGT - 106th World Series: San Francisco v Texas

The NFL used to avoid Sunday night games during the World Series so as not to compete with Game Two. Last year they adhered to that policy so as to not go up against Game Four. This year they've decided they're bulletproof, so it will be Steelers at Saints taking on Giants at Rangers. Sadly, I'm guess NBC won't regret this matchup at all.

According to the mainstream sports media, you're the only one.
Everything I heard about baseball today involved virtually nothing the games or teams and was instead all about the "fact" that no one is going to care and about how FOX execs are ready to slit their wrists due to a lack of NE teams in general and the Yanx in particular.
That history doesn't bear out this theory at all doesn't seem to faze the commentators. Regional World Series tend to over-saturate that one area and shut out the rest of the country and the fact that THEY don't know or care about the Rangers & Giants seems to put them in the mindset that no one else does either.

Can someone remind me what the rationale behind switching the opening day of the WS from Saturday to Wednesday a few years ago was? Why would MLB want to go up against Monday Night Football?

It's more about avoiding having four games on the traditionally dead for TV weekend nights. The theory is that momentum builds over the course of a 7-game series but, in recent years, the 4-game sweeps (98, 99, 04, 05, 07) and 5-game near sweeps have killed momentum and you never got to the 2nd weekend anyway. By starting mid-week, they hope to build interest heading into the weekend and, if it's still going towards game 6 & 7, put the theoretically most exciting games in the traditionally stronger viewing nights with little competition from other sports.
Next year's reg season sked has been altered to reflect this change (Friday opening day and mid-week close) which is designed to flow into this new post-season sked with fewer of these built-in off-days that have crept into these past two years.

Is anyone else flabbergasted that game 3 is starting at 6:30 (which is 5:30 local time)? There could be daylight at a World Series game in the first time in forever. I'm hoping these start times are actually for first pitch and not just when FOX pregame coverage begins.

Those are pre-game coverage times I'm sure. Still, that Saturday start will still be prior to 7PM which is the earliest in years.

I'm guessing that the actual (or at least planned) 1st pitch is going to be 7:57 for those 7:30 times (FOX seems to like that '3 minutes of' slot), 6:57 on the Saturday, and 8:07 on Sunday

I was close. The Sunday 1st pitch time is 8:20, the rest of my guesses were correct.
Not sure why later starts on Sunday nights are considered in fashion these days. It used to be that things were shifted an hour earlier on Sundays as the so-called 'Prime Time' hours began at 7PM as compared to 8 on every other day.

Selig says (paraphrase): "we moved the Saturday game so the kids can see the whole game."
In actuality: it's Saturday--it's the one game that could start at 8 PM.

Selig says: "we moved all the games up!"
In actuality: They're still going past 11, even without Posada walking to the mound between every pitch. In the WS, there is 2 and a half minutes between innings instead of the usual 2 minutes for national broadcasts of regular season games and 90 seconds for local broadcasts of regular season games. Starting at 8 (excuse me, 7:57--a concession to give FOX three additional minutes of national ads) is better than starting at 8:27 but if Selig gave a damn about when the kids (or even anybody on the east coast who gets up early and goes to work), they'd cut the between inning breaks but FOX would go nuts so that's never going to happen. They could also dispense with "God Bless America" after the top of the 7th but that would be seen as unpatriotic.

It's a step in the right direction but they could do more.

It's actually 2:05 between innings for reg season games, 2:25 for nationally televised games (FOX Sat & ESPN Sunday), and 2:55 for the post-season.

That's partly why just 7 of the 27 post-season games this year finished in under 3 hours (Posada is the next biggest reason)
7 more were between 3:00 and 3:15, leaving 13 which took 3:16 or longer including 6 that clocked in at 3:45+ (1 of those was extra innings)

I think the over-the-air signals changed over to HDTV re-
cently so you'd need a special antennae or add-on? I'd never
pick it up well enough up here without a roof top anyways and
that blew off three years ago.

Re: 2010's Last IGT - 106th World Series: San Francisco v Texas

antennas is antennas. er. antennae are antennae. the signals are still on the same frequencies, essentially. the only difference is the type of signal being sent. so a pair of rabbit ears would work fine if the signal is strong enough by you. otherwise amplified antennae are easy enough to come by that should do the trick, and aren't too expensive.

what you need is a digital tv or a digital-to-analog converter box that'll let your old crusty analog tv work.

Thanks, I forgot the Knicks season started tonight.

I have never heard of John Legend. Is that his real last name?

No, Wikipedia says it's a stage name.

Apparently he figured that: John Greatest Guy in the Whole Fucking World was far too long for marquees so he went with Legend instead.

Will Smith played him in the movies.

He was never one of the best outfielders in the game... he was a great right-fielder the way Francoeur was/is-- all arm. This is just about as good as he was, plus several years of rust.

Yeah, I always thought Vlad's defensive rep was overblown.
He obviously wasn't THIS bad in his prime but was a mediocre fielder at best with a great arm and even that arm was scattershot. Capable of the outrageous throw but also used a lot of air-mail stamps.
Frenchy is/was better .... defensively that is.

Except that they rarely ever went head-to-head in prime time. Baseball, under it's old schedule (Game 1 on Sat thru Game 7 the following Sunday) always took Monday off and the NFL, under it's old TV deal, usually either skipped their Sunday game or stuck their 'throw-away' game there.
Now MLB went to a Wednesday start/Thursday finale and, since the Sunday Night game was given to NBC (at huge dollars) it's been rigged to showcase their best teams the way MNF used to back in the day. Couple that with the nationally popular Steelers vs the defending champ Saints and it's not surprising at all.

I also think the media drives this to an extent. The four-letter network so dominates the sports conversation in this country now that I think what they talk about and what they show doesn't just reflect what the public wants to see but alters it to some degree. Catching bits and pieces of a few sports tidbits today not only showed things to be football dominated (expected) but also showed a trend among host/geeks where they mockingly seemed barely aware that a WS was going on over the past few days or which teams were involved - the implication, of course, is that those listening/watching were of the same mindset. After all, if THEY aren't paying attention it only stands to reason that the rest of the country isn't either.

5 innings gone in 78 minutes -- In a Yanqui game that's known as the top of the 3rd.

This game might just come down to not which pitcher blinks first but which manager.
At some point one of them is going to decide to pull his starter for a "fresher" guy from the pen - and were this in a NL park he'd have to factor the lineup into that decision.

With the lefty Hamilton leading off he may use that as an excuse to go to his LOOGY even though there's no way Hamilton can even tie the game, or he may just go to Wilson to start off the inning because ... well, just because it's the 9th.

These are guys who've waited 56 years for this. I'm happy for them. I'm happy for whichever San Franciscans who've remained loyal and weren't jerks to bmfc when he visited Phone Company Park. I'm happy for the castoffs who seem to really appreciate this. And for what it's worth, the Rangers couldn't have looked less interested as this game wore down.

How weird has this got to be for Barry Zito?

You sign a huge contract with a mid-level team - mostly because they offered the most money but maybe partly also because it's in your area. Then, after struggling with some good and bad over the years you essentially get cut from the roster on the eve of winning it all.

Former Met Willie Mays enjoyed last night's result

"Oh, man, I don't get overly excited about baseball, but looking at these kids and how excited they were, I had some tears in my eyes," Willie Mays said from his Peninsula home shortly after the Giants won the World Series on Monday night, "because you never know, this might be the last time something like this happens to some of these kids. It's a wonderful feeling for me, and I'm sure it's a wonderful feeling for these kids and their families."

Mays, surrounded by a half-dozen friends, had to leave the room after watching the final out, Brian Wilson striking out Nelson Cruz. "I had to get out of here for a minute because I'm not used to getting emotional like this."

As the current players dumped booze on one another, Mays was asked how he celebrated in '54 as a 23-year-old who capped off an MVP season with a sweep of the favored Indians.

"Leo (Durocher) wouldn't let me drink," Mays said of his first manager. "They took care of me. I had no Champagne. Just soda."

Re: 2010's Last IGT - 106th World Series: San Francisco v Texas

Speaking of Willie, he could use a street to call his own.

After several highly publicized fights over who should be eligible for a street naming honor, New York’s City Council created a list of requirements to simplify the process in 2008, and Rule No. 1 is that streets are co-named only for people who have died.

Yet once again, Mays’s name popped up on the list of proposed honorees submitted last Friday to the City Council for its review. Ydanis Rodriguez, the councilman whose district skirts the neighborhood where the Polo Grounds once stood, recognizes that the council is unlikely to approve a street name for Mays, but said that his accomplishments were worth noting.

“I don’t think it’s worth fighting about at this moment because if we make an exception for Mays, it will open the window for everyone else who wants to recognize people who are alive,” Rodriguez said, adding that he would explore building a baseball museum in his district. “Youngsters need to see their elders who are role models.”

Rodriguez took his cue from Community Board 10, whose borders overlap with the old Polo Grounds, and which in 2008 called for the creation of Willie Mays Drive on a service road off the Harlem River Drive between 155th and 163rd Streets.

The drive for a Willie Mays Drive began with Jacob Morris, director of the Harlem Historical Society. Morris has pushed for other streets in Harlem to be co-named to honor civil rights leaders, musicians, athletes and others who lived and worked in the neighborhood.

Also, he recently said he'd like to give that Wilpon kid a break.

"I sent word that I would like to do a show (at Citi Field) because I heard that they weren't drawing too well," Mays told the Daily News Monday night at the "Great Sports Legends" dinner to support the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, held at the Waldorf Astoria. "I said to the kid (Jeff Wilpon), 'Mr. Wilpon, I'd like to come back and do a show there.' Like an autograph session, help myself, help the Mets." Mays, 79, socked all but 14 of his 660 home runs while wearing a Giants uniform, but he still remembers the reception he got when he returned to New York in 1972 to play for the Mets.

"They really embraced me and made me feel welcome, like I never left," Mays said. "I want to do something for them."

And Willie oughta know, seeing as how he won a title in 1954 as a 23 y/o in his first full* ML season but then never again.
So enjoy things while they last Madison Bumgarner -- yaneverknow.

* He was technically a rookie in 1951 but didn't get the call up until late May - three weeks after turning 20. He then missed most of '52 and all of '53 in military service so 1954 was the first season where he went April thru October in baseball.
In '51 his team lost the WS in 6 games. After 1954, he got back there in '62 but lost in 7 (after his 9th inning double nearly tied the game). Then lost an NLCS to Pittsburgh in '71, before, finally, at age 42, winning an LCS but ... alas ... falling one game short in his final WS in his final season.

Probably one of the worst teams of this generation to win a world championship. Renteria, Burrell, Sanchez, Huff all had and OPS under .700 last year. The starting CF'er is a 32 y/o career .250 hitter, pound for pound probably the worst starting CFer in baseball, well excluding Aaron Rowand. And I guess Cody Ross could pass as mediocre.
As ESPN radio guy Colin Cowherd exaggerated, you probably couldn't find most of them in Wikepedia.

Not much, except to reinforce the already pretty entrenched idea that getting really good, young, home-grown pitching is a really good idea.

They might have set back the cause of advanced baseball metrics by about 50 years.

Not at all in my mind.

Sometimes, you have to look outside the numbers, eh?

Like Sabean et al did have - or that other GMs should have had - some kind of advance knowledge that the likes Ross, Renteria were going to have an October above and beyond their usual production? That Aubrey Huff out-played Josh Hamilton in the WS is a fact but hardly establishes a pattern that can be counted on in the future to the point where I'd take him first.

I don't hold the Giants in contempt. I also think that the '85 Cards were a fine hitting team and a formidable foe of Davey's Mets -- Despite their lack of power (that was the year of Jack Clark and seven leadoff hitters, no?) the '85 Cards were one of the NL's better hitting teams. McGee and Clark turned in MVP caliber hitting seasons; Ozzie Smith and Tommie Herr hit like all-stars and were among the very best hitters at their respective positions. Ozzie might've been the best hitting NL shortstop in '85. He could've qualified for the AS game on his hitting alone, even though, on top of that, his fielding was Ruthian.

That's a great description right there.

Re: 2010's Last IGT - 106th World Series: San Francisco v Texas

The 1985 Cards were deceptively good hitters and shouldn't be included there. The league skewed toward average that year, and they rank high among an unimpressive lot in OPS+. And even that's deceptive, as OPS weights OBP and SLG evenly, and OPB is in fact more important.

A little help. I don't follow. The '85 Cards shouldn't be included ... "where?"

Thanks. I know how much everybody here loves a positive Yankee analogy. BTW, is the Bambino a Yankee, or an MFY? This could be its own thread.

On my list. You seemed to take issue with their presence and I agreed.

I don't think they were deceptively good. They were good. They had a few hitters putting in career seasons, simultaneously -- common among pennant winning teams. (See, e.g., Mets, 1969) Also, I don't follow why you'd dock those Cards for not "skewing towards average" as much as the other teams. Shouldn't they be credited for that. Isn't that like saying so and so led the league in HR's, but only because he hit more HR's than any other player?

I was confused. When you wrote that they didn't belong on the list, I thought it was because you realized that they lost the '85 WS. But now I get it. OK.

The Babe: Yankee or MFY?

Re: 2010's Last IGT - 106th World Series: San Francisco v Texas

so the worst hitting champion since 1985 was the '85 royals. the worst pitching champion was the '06 cards.

i think. for some reason, the red sox, philly and twins pages on bbref are blocked at work. very curious...

regardless, here's the breakdown, ranked from best champion to worst.

Re: 2010's Last IGT - 106th World Series: San Francisco v Texas

The 2005 White Sox went 99-63 and were in first place wire-to-wire in the regular season (with the Tribe nipping at their heels late in the year but never catching them) and then swept the defending champion Red Sox, took the Angels 4-1 in the ALCS and swept the Astros in four tight games.

Whatever the internals indicate, that was a great team for one year, which is all you have to be (that, and a little lucky).

It’s a wrong team audio Cliff Notes version of your book.

Re: 2010's Last IGT - 106th World Series: San Francisco v Texas

George Vecsey pays local homage.

All was right in the firmaments for the Giants because management respected its past, did not pretend that the Giants landed in 1958, mysteriously steaming into the bay like it was El Dorado.

The Giants came from uptown Manhattan. They had been there since 1883. Two years later, the owner-manager Jim Mutrie was so enamored of his sturdy lads swatting the ball that he gloated “My giants!” and the nickname stuck. They were the team of the carriage trade when the Yankees (nee Highlanders) and the Trolley Dodgers, the motley Brooklyn franchise, were irrelevant.

The Giants and the Cubs were the best teams in the National League in the first quadrant of the last century. The Giants barnstormed to Japan and so impressed their hosts that the orange-and-black uniforms were picked up by the team that dominates that nation to this day, the Yomiuri Giants.

The Giants had a hold on New York, including families like the Whitneys and the Walkers. One Whitney, married name Joan Payson, eventually bought the new team, the Mets. She had a minority stockholder named Herbert Walker, charming guy, had relatives named Bush. I often wonder what became of that family. Maybe they still follow baseball. Dunno.

The Giants also had Irish fans, like the McGuinness men, who were like uncles to me, who took me to my first game at the Polo Grounds and chortled when the Giants beat my Dodgers on a chintzy home run.

The Giants also claimed Vic Ziegel from the Bronx. When he became one of the great and funny voices in New York, he had a vocation of standing up for his departed team, once tracking down the modest plaque in a housing development that notes where the Polo Grounds used to be. Do I think it is a coincidence that Vic departed this world in late July and the Giants won the World Series in early November? Not really.

Credit must also go to the inspired management of the Giants, which found role players, and had the courage to bench expensive parts like Barry Zito. As Tyler Kepner pointed out in The Times on Tuesday, there is probably a lesson to other teams about cautious spending.

There is another lesson: the Giants respected history. They brought back Barry Bonds to throw out a ball during the League Championship Series. They brought back McCovey, Marichal, Perry, Cepeda and Irvin for the first game of the World Series. (Willie Mays was sick.)

That fine man, Monte Irvin, now 91, went to the mound in a wheelchair. The next night, Dave Dravecky, who pitched for the Giants and later lost an arm to cancer, visited the mound. Bobby Thomson’s two daughters, tossed out the first pitches. Now Vic Ziegel’s cockatiel can start practicing new words. The Giants win the World Series! The Giants win the World Series!

I met Russo at a book signing once, and instead of his book I had him autograph the program from that game. He did appear to be gracious about it and didn't give any sort of "Geez, you want me to sign THIS" attitude.

World Series factoids:

- The non-hitting Giants scored a total of 29 runs over the 5 games. The high-scoring Rangers totaled 29 hits.

- A total of just 14 runs were scored during the three games in Arlington. 13 of them came via HRs

Came across Chris Russo reliving his Giants life, in two parts:

Part I here;

Part II here.

If you can forget how much you couldn't stand Chris Russo, how grossly overcompensated he is for what he does and what a Met baiter he was when things weren't going swimmingly for us, it's not bad.

Nice to see the Giants honor their history by inviting past greats to participate, and that the parade route was the exact same one used for the official welcoming in 1958.

From Yahoo Questions;

Why does Tim Lincecum & Brian Wilson have trouble articulating their thoughts when they speak?
I have noticed whenever they are asked questions during interviews they always mumble and pause between words because they can't articulate their thoughts into a full sentence..
what is the cause of this speech impediment that they suffer from?
