I never really thought there was much chance of that. (But until he actually gets hired elsewhere it will continue to be a possibility.)

He won't go to T-dot. What's more, he won't commit to a new club until he assess the Mets interest.

I certainly wouldn't think it to be the end of the world if he gets the Mets gig.(my word Seo mixes a nice Margarita)

ESPN: Bobby V withdraws name from Marlins

BY MATTHEW CERRONE ON OCT 13, 2010, 6:55 PM

“Bobby Valentine confirmed Wednesday that he has taken himself out of consideration for the Marlins managing job for 2011,” reports Tim Kurkjian of ESPN.com.

Original Post at 1:59 pm:

According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, “?The Mets appear to be a distant third or (fourth) on a list of possible destinations for Bobby Valentine,” who interviewed with the Mariners earlier this week.

This is frustrating. I know. I’m dying for the Mets to get the show on the road here. The sooner there is a new GM, the sooner there will be a new manager, and the sooner we can start talking players, transactions and ways to make this team better for 2011 and beyond.

I was told earlier today, by someone familiar with these processes, that some candidates arrive to these interviews, like the Mets are conducting this week, usually having a list of people he or she might consider for manager, with some candidates often coming from the minor league system of their current team. And so, for instance, perhaps Rick Hahn likes someone from the White Sox farm who you and I have never heard of, and so he isn’t appearing in Heyman’s columns.

To learn about other names being mentioned in connection to vacant managerial jobs around the league, be sure to check out Heyman’s report.

Question: Is a team better off not hiring a name-brand institutional legend like Sandberg to manage, under the notion that it damages the brand if you get to the point where you have to fire him?

Managers who were legends (or near-legends) as players for the team they eventually managed*:
Alan Trammell
Walter Johnson
Pete Rose
Yogi Berra
Lou Boudreau
Tyrus Cobb
Mickey Cochrane
Joe Cronin

I'm reaching back for a lot of these. It seems that teams are little shyer in modern times.

By the way, reports have Sandy Alomar, Jr. getting a third (?!) interview.

Cubs name Quade manager (AP)
The Chicago Cubs picked Mike Quade as their new manager Tuesday, choosing to go with the guy who ran the team well for the last six weeks of last season rather than a higher-profile name. The 53-year-old Quade, the team's third base coach the past four years, was given a two-year contract and there's a club option for 2013.

Whither Ryne Sandberg?

Sandberg, to his credit, isn't just demanding the job based on past greatness as he's been doing to minor league thing in the Cubs' system and will probably be considered ML managing material by someone in the near future, especially now that he's not in Chicago's plans for the next few years. Sounds like this could be the end of the road for him with them.

Bud Harrelson. OK, not quite a "legend", but a popular and long-time player.

Yeah, but I'm trying to distinguish well-respected organizational men/championship contributors like Harrelson and Bowa and Bill F. Russell from brand-defining guys like Ripken and Seaver and Williams and DiMaggio. It's a lot easier to fire Bud Harrelson than Tom Seaver. And it would be a lot harder to fire Cal Ripken than it was to axe his dad.

And surely that feeds into the the thinking of both the player and the team.

Haudricourt is currently trying to confirm the story Yesterday, FOXSports' Ken Rosenthal said, “Keep hearing Bobby Valentine is finalis for the Brewers.” “But would Brewers pay V? And would he go?.” Valentine has managed in the Majors for 15 years, eight with the Rangers and seven with the Mets. According to a source inside the Milwaukee Brewers organization, the team has agreed in principle with former Mets manager Bobby Valentine to become the teams next manager.

Now the two sides must finalize a contract agreement. The source says Valentine is looking for $10-million over 3-years which may or may not throw a wrench into the deal.

Valentine: No contract talks
By Tom Haudricourt of the Journal Sentinel
Oct. 27, 2010 1:00 p.m. |(23) Comments

I just made contact with Bobby Valentine to see if he would confirm the Wisconsin Radio Network report that he has an agreement in place with the Brewers and the contract details are to be worked out.

This was his response:

"There has been no conversation about a contract with your team. Not one word has been mentioned to me and I have not mentioned to anyone there about a contract."

I sent Valentine another text to ask if he is in talks with the Brewers about the job and this was his response:

"We had a meeting."

So, it's obvious that the Brewers have talked to Valentine about the job. It became apparent over the last 24 hours that Valentine was one of the four finalists that GM Doug Melvin mentioned recently. I know for sure that Bob Melvin and Joey Cora are in that group, and I suspect that Ron Roenicke completes the final four.

Bill Scott's WRN report said Valentine was seeking a three-year, $10 million deal. Don't know if the Brewers would go that high and it's hard to imagine an agreement being in place without the money being settled. And, according to Valentine, there have been no contract talks.

I got no response from Valentine when I asked if he has been offered the job so there's a distinct possibility that the process has begun to see if a deal can be worked out. That's all I know for now. I will try to get more information as the day progresses.

Yanx & Girardi near a three-year deal acc. to various sources.
Total contract value expected to be between 9 & 10 mil - which is interesting only in the way it might affect the Valentine/Brewers negotiations. Can Bobby realistically - after being out MLB for so long - expect higher pay than one coming off two straight playoff appearances including one championship, and is Milwaukee the type of team that would pay it? That's all assuming the reports of his demands in the neighborhood of 3/10 are accurate.

Remaining teams needing managers:

Milwaukee -- Bobby? and if not him have already interviewed several others including Joey Cora & Bob Melvin
Marlins -- I'm assuming they're likely to re-hire their interim from last season
Rangers -- Almost certain to re-up Mr. Washington
Yanx -- Will have Girardi re-signed before the week is out

... which leaves the Mets & Pittsburgh to fight it out over whoever is remaining.

Re: Hired

Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times just tweeted that “sources are saying that Brewers have hired Ron Roenicke” to be their new manager.

Cowley covers the White Sox, not the Brewers, but Chicago bench coach Joey Cora was in the mix for the Milwaukee job.

Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel passed along Cowley’s report and added: “I have reason to believe he is correct.”

Roenicke managed in the minors and has served as the Angels’ bench coach since 2006, when he took over the job after Mike Scioscia’s former right-hand man, Joe Maddon, left to manage the Rays.

Several previous reports had Bobby Valentine as the front-runner for the Milwaukee job, but apparently much like with the Marlins during the season his Brewers courtship broke down somewhere along the line.

UPDATE: Haudricourt has confirmed the news.

I can live with Bobby not managing the Mets, but having him managing a team 72 miles down the road would have made my head explode.

I'm glad Milwaukee went with Roenicke.

So figuring that the Rangers will re-up Ron Washington, that leaves the entire planet of candidates up to us and the presumably budget-conscious Pirates.

It might work out to the benefit of the manager to take a one year deal, so long as the team isn't willing to guarantee the multi-year deal. I don't know what the deal was in Florida, though.

M.I. probably doesn't get the significance of the Alston inference.
In the mid-'50s when then Brooklyn Dodger manager Charlie Dressen was coming off two consecutive pennants and asked for a multi-year contract he was told that the team did not give multi-year deals. When he insisted they told him to walk and, in his place, hired the relatively unknown Walter Alston who then proceeded to manage the Dodgers for 20-some very fruitful years all by way of 20-some consecutive 1-year deals.

Granted that would never be done today but that was the reference.

Speaking of HoF managers, word is out that Sparky Anderson has been placed by his family in hospice care due to complications from dementia.
He is 76.

Classic work from Jazz Radio DJ in that thread.

Perhaps one of these contestants will call in to discuss their strategy for the ...... semi....finals.

But first some more classic jazz on WARM-FM, supported by members like you. From 1957, here's "Bouncing with my Baby at the Savoy" by the John Lewis Trio. Bob Etheridge on piano ... Bill Thomas, alto saxophone ... Vic Snyder on mandolin ... Gene Green on xylophone ... John Olver plays the triangle. Michal McNulty just sat on a chair in the studio and didn't do much (careful listeners can hear him fart approximately 15 seconds into the track) .... Vernon Ehlers jangled his keys ... Mac Thornberry delivered a pizza to the studio ... Ike Skelton provided the weed to the band members.
