Giant: Aubrey Huff III

You know Aubrey from his time in Tampa. Huff lost his fatehr to heroism when he was six when Huff II tried to disam a threatening man and was shot and killed. Less heroically, he once dumped on Baltimore on the Bubba the Love Sponge show, calling her a horseshit city. He is known to wear rhinestone-encrusted thong underware in order to break out of a slump. He's played five different positions but is now mostly a first bagger. He has 224 career homers, but only singles in the postseason of 2010, his first.

Aubrey?

Aubrey and Baubi?

And just because Bill Madden couldn't help himself

Brian Sabean, architect of San Francisco Giants, started under George Steinbrenner with Yankees

SAN FRANCISCO - Somehow, I have to believe George Steinbrenner wouldn't be quite his usual spoil sport about this World Series in which his Yankees are not participants. Rather, I could see him even taking credit for it - or at least the San Francisco Giants' half of it.

Look around these Giants, and the Steinbrenner Yankee influence is everywhere, beginning at the top where GM Brian Sabean cut his teeth, first as scouting director for the Yankees in the early '80s and then as VP of player development when he presided over, among other things, the drafting of Derek Jeter out of high school in Kalamazoo, Mich., in 1992.

Since becoming Giants general manager in 1996, Sabean has gradually surrounded himself with Steinbrenner U. grads. Three of the Giants coaches - Dave Righetti, who handles the pitchers, Hensley Meulens, who's in charge of the hitters, and Roberto Kelly at first base - were all Yankees when Sabean was running the minor league department. Sabean's top assistant, Dick Tidrow, was a principal set-up reliever on the '77-'78 Yankee world championship teams, and his two advance scouts, Joe Lefebvre and Steve Balboni, were college pals in New Hampshire who both came up through the Yankee system as players.

So would Steinbrenner be feeling a sense of pride about all his "boys" having made good this October?

"I'm sure he would," Sabean was saying yesterday as we watched this patchwork Giants team of his working out. "Obviously, I owe a lot to George. He treated me and my family extremely well. It's the family tree here. We all learned to do it there. I've found it's always a safe bet when you hire someone who's been through the Yankees."

There was a time, back in the early '90s when Sabean might have been GM of the Yankees. Steinbrenner was grooming him for the job, although only after Sabean was being pursued by his former Yankee boss Bob Quinn, who, after being replaced as Yankee GM, wound up being hired by the Giants as their GM. Sabean remembered having flown from Tampa to San Francisco to accept the job as Quinn's assistant when he got a call from Steinbrenner's son-in-law, Joe Molloy, who was acting general partner of the Yankees while Steinbrenner was on suspension from baseball, telling him he had to come back.

"Joe told me that the Giants didn't have permission to talk to me," Sabean said, "and he went on to say that George was ballistic and was threatening tampering charges. So I went back to Tampa and that's when Joe told me that George was going to make it all right for me."

There was a tacit promise that Sabean would be the successor to Gene Michael as Yankee GM. Unfortunately, around that same time, Steinbrenner and Michael were constantly sniping at each other, and it was clear that when the Boss came back from suspension, Michael wouldn't be long for the GM job. And then word began leaking out about Sabean becoming GM.

"I felt terrible about all that," Sabean said. "Stick had exposed me to so much as my boss. That's when I decided I had to get out of there."

Sabean went back to Tampa and wrote a letter of resignation. This time, however, The Boss gave him his blessings.

Since Sabean has been their GM, the Giants have won two National League pennants, three NL West division titles and have been the wild card once.

It wasn't all so wonderful, however, as he had to navigate around meddlesome ownership - specifically former Giants' managing general partner Peter Magowan - the man who originally signed Barry Bonds and ordered him re-signed in the midst of the steroids scandal surrounding the slugger so the Giants could capitalize on his pursuit of Hank Aaron's all-time home run record. It was also Magowan who ordered the $126million, seven-year contract for Barry Zito, an idiotic signing that remains an albatross on the Giants payroll for three more years.

Nevertheless, this present Giants team is without doubt Sabean's greatest accomplishment, if only because it was put together on such a shoestring.

Aubrey Huff, the Giants' home run and RBI leader, center fielder Andres Torres, left fielder Pat Burrell and shortstop Juan Uribe were all signed as "leftover/bargain basement" free agents. Cody Ross, the hitting star of this postseason, was a waiver-wire claim from the Florida Marlins, and lefty Javier Lopez and righty Ramon Ramirez, who have formed the makeshift set-up relief for closer Brian Wilson, were last-minute trading-deadline pickups. If nothing else, if Sabean isn't Executive of the Year he is certainly Scavenger of the Year.

"So what did he think Steinbrenner would say about all this?

"I think," said Sabean, "he'd probably say 'I raised that kid. He learned from us.' And if he did, he'd be right."

Dave Righetti, Hensley Meulens, and Roberto Kelly went to "Steinbrenner U."?

The only thing he taught any of those guys was to watch their backs.

Yes, because this series is all about the Yankees. Look for Buck and McCarver to default to their usual Yankee-worship mode at least twice in this series.

Also- see how long they can go without mentioning the name 'Jeter'. I know it's a series between San Francisco and Texas, but old habits die hard. His name will come up somehow.

It's adorable that he claims Sabean as a MFY success story. The actual article itself is the usual Madden brain torture.

And speaking of torture, some idle speculation about Brian Wilson's mysterious friend, courtesy of the shitslingers over at Deadspin.

OOOOO-REEE-BAAAAY!

Nephew of deceased light-hitting defensive whiz/former SF fan-favorite Jose Uribe. From Bani, DR; once accused of shooting two men there (4 years ago last week, actually), but never charged. Does weirdly compelling "jazz hands" thing when he hits a home run, like so:

Has three kids with wife Ana (no picture available, though I imagine she's got a resilient frame).

Free-swinging, multi-position career fringe-starter, whose power and versatility occasionally outweighs his Helen-Kellerish sensory awareness at the plate. On this team, this year, at this time of year... it's working. Think of him as the Giants' more sausagelike 2006 Jose Valentin.

And speaking of Benny-redolent free swingers...

"I'm not dead! I'm just resting!"

He looked pretty decent in limited plate action during the LCS-- taking a couple of walks, even-- and even with the weight, he's probably their best (or at least, a close second-best) defensive third baseman.

I'm probably whistling into the abyss here, but again, I'm disappointed by the lack of Panda action, and am hoping for a couple of home starts, at least.

Re: Know Them Giants

I learned in my brief Francesa exposure today that the young tike Lincecum, after getting this post saeson experience and getting to pitch against Halladay and Lee is going to something real special for years to come.

also, (not from Mikey) he makes the AT&T Park security guys walk his bulldog for him when he starts.

Also, he's a wizard with the baseball...

... and an aspiring wizard without it.

Also, also, though he does enjoy some grass-eous emanations every now and again, he is-- according to a trustworthy SF source, "a bit of a lightweight" in terms of alcohol tolerance (whereas, according to the same source, Zito and Wilson have hollow legs).

Re: Know Them Giants

Travis Ishikawa is a reserve first baseman and should see action when the Giants have a late-inning lead (for defense) or need a left-handed pinch-hitter.

He's one of only a few Japanese-Americans ever to be employed by a big league franchise. His great-grandparents came from japan to work on the railroads and were imprisoned in an internment camp during WWII.

Travis met his his Wifey, Rochelle, at a dentist's office where she worked. He was there to get examined as a result of getting hit in the face with a pitch during his first game with the San Jose franchise of the California League. Travis & Rochelle are hardcore Christians who have a daughter, Faith. Ishikawa also is a raising a son he apparently made while still in high school.

I can't find a photo of Rochelle, although the search leads to to some NSFW stuff. So here's Travis with his Mom.

His impending free agency is way more important than a series that nobody will be watching anyway.

McCarver: "The World Series. This is where players dream of playing their entire lives."

Buck: "Did you hear the Mets hired a GM? They really should've waited until after the World Series. Don't want to take attention away from this great moment."

McCarver: "You'd never get that across town. Not that Cashman's going anywhere anyway."

Buck: "Unless you're A-Rod, remember how he opted out of his contract during the World Series games a couple of years ago?"

McCarver: "You know we can count on Derek Jeter and the Yankees not announcing his new contract during the games."

Gerald Dempsey "Buster" Posey is the son of Demp & Tracey Posey of Leesburg, Ga.

Posey was recruited as a shortstop by Florida State U, but switched the catching during his sophomore year. He's one of those David Wright types who says the right thing in interviews, hits like maniac, gets on the Dean's List, and marries his high-school sweetheart, Kristen.

Oh, look, here she is! Hi, Kristen!

Wrong. You lean toward the Rangers, in the hope that Kristen Posey realizes what a loser her husband is and dumps him, moves to New York and finds love with a wonderful yet bald university admissions counselor type.
