Pete Rose getting his bet in

Names are been thrown about the place like confetti at a wedding

The latest odds out of Ireland are

A cardboard cut out of a man that looks like a manager 3/1

Bob Melvin - 4/1

Wally Backman - 25/1

Chip Hale - 4/1

Ken Oberkfell - 20/1

Lee Mazzilli - 30/1

Clint Hurdle - 15/1

Pete Mackanin - 25/1

Bobby Valentine - 30/1

Don Wakamatsu - 30/1

Terry Collins - 10/1

DeMarlo Hale - 40/1

Look, these numbers will surely change after the press conference with Alderson today, but you see the trend, low key is the key.

I went with Clint.

My wishes are Valentine followed by anyone but Backman.

Re: Paddy Power New Manager Poll/Betting

My wishes are Valentine, but I'm projecting Collins. The wigs know his work in the Mets system and Alderson has seen plenty of him in the AL West.

Like Alderson, he'd also be coming out of semi-retirement for the "right situation."

This has swayed me to Collins, I was going to wager on Melvin.

I voted Oberkfell.
But I would be equally as happy with Hurdle.
I hope they don't try to pass off Maz as a "true Met" after he became a turncoat for the MFYs.

Fiery loathing of all things Yankee and Jeter: Check

There aren't many teams in the majors that witlessly prioritize smallball more than Clint Hurdle and the Rockies, but the White Sox are one ...

I mean, if Alderson holds true to form, the next Skipper won't go using too many of his own ideas if they're dumb ones anyway, but Hurdle kinda scares me some.

I'm feeling a Hale storm coming on.

You know, as I think about it, if Sandy wants a manager without an independent streak or ingenuity, we're going to wind up with the second coming of The Robot, Jerry Manuel.

Smallball is, indeed, witless. Smallball in Denver is reprehensible. If I ran Denver baseballl, my sharpshooters, perched atop the stadium light towers, would shoot to kill any sac-bunters.

While ya'll were off yesterday rest assured that your favOURite bookie Paddy Power was working the phones and has come out with new odds

While we took a lot of heavy bets for Valentine he was never in the running our sources say , the bookie never loses right?

We can't separate Melvin and Collins right now

Melvin - 3/1

Collins 3/1

Hurdle - 5/1

Chip Hale - 8/1

Our sources at Newsday are saying Melvin, Hurdle and Collins have emerged as clear favOURites to advance to the second round of interviews with Chip Hale a possibility. Sources indicate Hale will likely be on the coaching staff regardless of who gets the job. Mets brass think highly of him but with no MLB coaching experience Alderson is not likely to choose him.

Wally Backman is likely going to be offered a "promotion" to Class A St. Lucie next season, only in baseball is going from Brooklyn to St. Lucie considered a promotion.

Backman - 30/1

Alderson and his new lieutenant, Paul DePodesta, will interview Triple-A Buffalo manager Ken Oberkfell and Double-A manager Tim Teufel before moving forward.

Oberkfell and Teufel - 100/1

Adam Rubin wrote:
General manager Sandy Alderson indicated this week that he hoped to have first-round interviews completed by the weekend. He added that the list of managerial candidates may expand by one or two, but is largely complete.

Valentine boner!

Adam Rubin wrote:
One potential additional interviewee is ex-Met Jose Oquendo, who has spent the past 11 seasons as the St. Louis Cardinals' third base coach.

Alderson hired Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa as manager with the Oakland Athletics, and that relationship would serve as a natural bridge to Oquendo becoming a candidate.

Not completely deflated here. Maybe Oquendo is, um, Bobby cover.

Think about it (but not too hard because I'm grabbing here). If you were talking to Valentine, wouldn't it make some sense to initially publickly meet with him late in the game so he doesn't tower over the whole process?

No? OK.

Jose Oquendo?, odds start at 500/1....now , if you wanted odds on him being Cards manager after LaRussa then you can get early bird specials at 10/1

Because we at Paddy Power are nice we WILL NOT be taking anymore of your money in regards to Valentine......you might instead want to spend such money on treatment .

Re: Paddy Power New Manager Poll/Betting

Well , the Valentine refuses to die.......Alderson with Burkhardt - lukewarm, tepid??? yes and yes

Alderson refuses to rule out Valentine
Bobby Valentine is unlikely to be the next manager of the Mets, but general manager Sandy Alderson would not exactly put his name to rest when questioned by SNY's Kevin Burkhardt.

Alderson said, ``Well, everybody’s eligible. You’re eligible… It’s obviously a name that has been floated, it’s been discussed in the media… I’d rather not talk about individual names at this point, but, obviously, Bobby Valentine is a name that we’ve considered and is a well-known possibility for us.”

Until proven otherwise, the Mets are in save-a-buck mode and are not paying the millions it would take to bring back Valentine, who has priced and/or talked himself out of every job he has been mentioned for since returning from Japan.

Valentine is making plenty from ESPN to second guess other teams and managers. Why would he settle for less to have others second guess him in the dugout?

Alderson will remain the highest paid person in management. Trouble is, no one buys a ticket to see the general manager.

His ego is conflated by two opposing forces (1) He goes to a ballclub where he's worshipped by many and where a WS will ensure his baseball immortality; (2) He believes he's worth more than any other manager.

So the answer to the question is: If (1)>(2).
