IPCT (In Press Conference Transcript) Introducing Sandy

Might as well get this kicked off.

What kinds of things would you like to hear Sandy say?

I'm hoping for something like this:

"I know that we're somewhat constrained by a few large contracts, but I do have a plan for the Mets to be competitive in 2011 while we build for 2012 and beyond."

Re: IPCT (In Press Conference Transcript) Introducing Sandy

I'd like to see the aurora rising behind him.

I'd like to see the Spanish-languish media present and treated well.

I'd like, if Jon Heyman asks a douchey question, to get told, "You know, that's a real douchey question." Even better if Mr. Met just mutely lifts his hands in astonishment to his huge face and then hangs the great orb downward, shaking it in disbelief, embarassed for mankind and anthropmorphic baseball-kind.

I'd like to see Gilbert Gottfried introduce Alderson, and then Alderson take the podium and look at Gottfried like he's from Mars.

I'd love Bobby Vee introduced right after him.

Fred calling for a moment of silence for Bill Shannon would be nice.

Joke about Madoff losses, then winkingly "point and shoot" at a quietly fuming Jeffy.

Also, I'd like to see him hit a guy. Just, y'know, to set a tone.

Also also, I hope he wears his New York tie to the press conference. I keep hearing New York ties are important to this bunch.

It's no surprise that he's handcuffed a bit for 2011. I think they'll be freely (and hopefully wisely) spending in the 2011-12 offseason. Sandy implied that they'll have an extra $50 million* to work with.

That's true, and it's easy to nitpick specific statements.

I don't think there is anything they can sign in the offseason, outside of '69's Seaver, that will sell tickets before the team is winning and in first place a good portion into the season.

On the other hand, what's the hit if no one is interested in April-May (until the weather warms up) except us die hards?

Really can apply to everything though. if the Mets clinch a playoff spot in 2011, K-Rod's a story of redemption (providing he doesn't beat anyone else up) if they have a losing season, he's a clubhouse cancer who the Mets _have_ to trade in the offseason.

Re: The Free Agent Market -- it's not looking like a great year in the market and is looking (early view anyway) like a good one in the draft.
Between those 'facts' and the payroll situation (three large contracts coming off the books after 2011) it's probably not a great year to dive in on FAs anyway.

The "Not aggressive" quote is probably the best way to both tone down the hype for a quick-fix solution while saying that it's not the best time.

The Mets have started to show some small measure of "getting it" in regards to the fans, but if they think Backman or Torre are going to sell tickets...

Re: IPCT (In Press Conference Transcript) Introducing Sandy

From Adam Rubin's summary on the Slotting system/draft:

- Major League Baseball recommends signing bonuses based on a prospect's draft position. The Mets try to be good MLB citizens and adhere to that system, but that appears as if it will change under Alderson and they will spend over the recommended amount to exploit the system, as other big-market clubs do. Sometimes, attractive players fall because of fears about their contract demands, and the Mets may now be in position to take advantage of that.
"Where he makes a decision that we should go after a player that may be different than the slot says, we're going to follow that," Fred Wilpon said.
Said Jeff Wilpon: "I think we've gone over quite a bit. Maybe we didn't go for that reach player, and that certainly might change."

The best thing about this isn't that it's going to change the minor league system overnight (it won't) but that it appears to signal a willingness to understand that adhering to the "recommendations" just for the sake of it is a stupid idea that should be broken if/when the right situation arises.

Ken Davidoff in Newsday creates an Alderson attribute from very thin air:

Alderson gets it. Fully. He gets New York, as he worked here for many years as a senior executive for Major League Baseball. He gets the Mets; his 1988 Oakland Athletics were set to take on the Mets in that World Series before Mike Scioscia went deep off Dwight Gooden.

How on earth does the fact that his team might might have played the Mets 22 years ago mean Alderson "gets the Mets"? Unless Davidoff has proof that Sandy thought to himself, "If I were running that organization they'd have beaten the Dodgers," and obsessed on it from there, this strikes me as one of the more absurd throwaway lines I've ever seen.

Marty Noble would have used the 1988 near-collision of A's and Mets as a jumping off point and probably gotten a great quote from Dave Magadan while doing so.

You're right, that's certainly what the word means, though I'm not sure it's what Klap was trying to convey. I think the point can also be applied to the more standard criticisms of Jeff's involvement. If he was part of a decision to select Sandy Alderson, while clearly knowing the influential role Sandy would need assured in order for him to take the job, than he's made a decision strongly at odds with many common perceptions of him. If JW was as supremely meddlesome, narcissistic, and controlling as so many make him out to be, Alderson wouldn't be a guy he'd want to hire.

I also think there's truth to this:

"My role hasn't changed," Jeff Wilpon said. "I mean, your perception of my role is probably not what my role really is. Your perception of the role, and the fan-base perception, is not correct. So my role has not changed."

Jeff Wilpon: Boogieman.

METS NAME J.P. RICCIARDI SPECIAL ASSISTANT
TO GENERAL MANAGER SANDY ALDERSON

FLUSHING, N.Y., November 2, 2010 - The New York Mets today announced that J.P. (John Paul) Ricciardi has been named Special Assistant to General Manager Sandy Alderson. From November 14, 2001 through 2009, he was the Senior Vice President, Baseball Operations and General Manager for the Toronto Blue Jays. Ricciardi spent last season as a baseball analyst for ESPN.

"J.P. brings a wealth of knowledge and a breadth of experience to the organization," said Alderson. "I worked with him for over a decade in Oakland and I know first hand he's a superb talent evaluator. He'll be a tremendous resource in a variety of areas."

In his new role, Ricciardi will assist Alderson in all aspects of the baseball department.

The 51-year-old worked for the Oakland Athletics for 16 years (1986-2001), including 12 years (1986-1997) when Alderson was the team's General Manager.

"I couldn't be more excited about being reunited with Sandy," said Ricciardi. "We enjoyed tremendous success together in Oakland and it's my goal to help duplicate that here with the Mets. As a former Met farm hand, it's a double homecoming for me."

Ricciardi played two seasons in the Mets minor league system after signing as a non-drafted free agent. In 1980, he was a teammate of current Oakland GM Billy Beane in the New York-Penn League with Little Falls and in 1981 he played for Shelby (A) of the South Atlantic League.

Get criticized for trading off Scott Kazmir? Rush all pitching prospects to the majors.

Bullpen fails in 08? Stuff 09 roster with big-name relief pitchers at any cost.

Saddled with high-priced, untradable capitalists? Make them pariahs with vague swipes at their patriotism, and swear off free-agent spending.

Finish under .500 with illiterate general manager with strength in old-school scouting? Hire Harvard egghead with background in space-age analytics.

The smarts are a bit of a PR tightrope, though-- you've gotta relate to get along. DePodesta got crucified for some iffy results (the Loduca-Encarnacion/Penny-Choi trade being the big one, along with giving J. D. Drew the opt-out clause) despite a generally rock-solid process in LA; press guys like Plaschke and Simers painted a picture of him as an inexperienced nerd* in over his head, with talk-radio following suit, and McCourt apparently bought it after a few years/field-manager-related travails. Plus, both Alderson and Ricciardi have caught flak about being "haughty" or "condescending" with the press. (They should REALLY enjoy the constant Francesa-ing.)

*Leaving aside the joke of a non-athlete like Plaschke giving verbal noogies to the ex-varsity football/baseball player DePo, this inexperienced nerd came to the Dodger job with 2 years of scouting experience and 6 years of front-office time/management experience under John Hart and Billy Beane.

The list may be long now, but I suspect it will shrink rapidly to about five or six people at most.

Great lyric right there for a country song.

Might be foolish optimism, but THIS decision, these two Harvard eggheads, I'm way OK with, even if it feels like 'opposite day'. Bring DePodesta, too. A team of smarter dudes should (hopefully, hopefully) keep the org away from as much guessing and knee-jerk moves to pacify rabid newspaper peeps & angry bloggy/WFAN fans. Hopefully.

Hopefully.

Ah, eff Plaschke and Simers both. Irrelevant shit-stirrers.

I remember looking into DePodesta's moves w/ a Dodger fan friend a few years ago and we both thought he did... pretty OK.

Here's something with a bit of his spotted history: http://dodgerthoughts.baseballtoaster.c ... 01285.html

Truth be told, I'm not arguing he's great or anything, cause I really don't know if he is. I just like that they're trying to assemble a collection of intelligent people who have worked together and had success together & hope that translates here, whethere DePo's a part of it or not. And for all the smart, Harvard guy rah-rah shit, I hope these guys don't insulate themselves from the other opinions either, and I don't think (hope, again) they won't.

Alderson today tells Mets employees his managerial list is long, suggesting process could take a while.

Can't wait to find out whether I'm on it.
