The Tom Seaver Award

Lost in the alleged despondency, it's easy to overlook the 2010 Mets general ability to find starters to stay in the game into the late innings --- before a grand slam takes a bat and shatters all that makes life good. This ephemeral nightly competitiveness can only speak well of the Mets starting staff. And well they pitched --- typically --- at least after orignal rotation regulars John Maine and Oliver Perez were pushed aside.

The standard bearer for excellence by a starting pitcher can be one and only --- the pro's pro who made excellence in starting pitching so taken for granted that M. Donald Grant couldn't stand it, and had to show New York just what a treasure they had... by taking it away.

So keep alive the spirit of our very own three-time Cy Young Award Winner (and still the most successful vote garnerer in the history of Major League Baseball's Hall of Fame) as you vote for the George Thomas Seaver Outstanding Met Starting Pitcher of the Year Award for 2010.

Numbers below represent the players' performances only as starting pitchers. We ask for five votes, first-through-fifth, and will score your votes as five points for first, four for second, etc.

Santana vs Dickey -- Very close seasons. One wasn’t there at the beginning, the other not there at the end. But in between had identical records (11-9) and both deserved better support. Similar ERAs (Dickey better by 0.14), and essentially identical WHiPs. Dickey actually walked fewer but didn’t K nearly as many.
I'm putting Johan up top on the basis of 3 extra starts and 25 more IP.

Pelfrey -- Led staff in wins, IPs, and starts. Was lights out for a while but also had more bad games than the above two which led to significantly higher ERA & WHiP numbers.

Niese -- 2nd on the team in games started and might have been up there fighting it out with the leaders if not for his late season fade.

Takahashi had a better season overall than Gee but not just as a starter so Gee gets the nod despite only 5 starts for the year.

1st - Santana
2nd - Dickey
3rd - Pelfrey
4th - Niese
5th - Gee

I also wanted to vote "tie" for Santana and Dickey but didn't think this was allowed.

So what'll happen if this award winner is not the same as the Schaefer Met Pitcher of the Year?

Ashie: Dickey and Santana are a "pick em", and Takahashi over Gee, while i disagree, could at least be argued in terms of Tak's overall contribution and making twice as many GS as Gee (despite pitching less well in those starts), but what's your rationale for Niese over Pelfrey? Pelf outdid him in every category.

a general understanding that the two measure similar, but different things?
