Re: Behold, the 2010-11 Free Agents

Kris Benson SP
Mike Hampton these two are still at it?

did I see Russ Springer's name in there?

Regarding Feliciano , from Rubin

1) Mets must offer salary arbitration by midnight on Nov.23 for right to draft pick compensation

2)Pedro must accept arb by Nov. 30. The Mets are still permitted to sign Pedro even if they don't offer arb

3) Offering arb to Feliciano to get pick between first and second round means you are willing to go to arb with him , and he made $2.9 million in 2010......

Other

The non tender deadline for players with less than 6 years service is Dec. 2nd - John Maine will be cut by then and probably Green too.

NEW RULE

New Rule for 2010 - Free Agents may negotiate with any club at midnight on the 5th day after the World Series, bidding begins on Saturday night.

Re: Behold, the 2010-11 Free Agents

I'm perfectly willing to go year-to-year with Feliciano. I don't seem him getting a huge raise in arbitration, and he's capable of improving on this past season. On the other hand, if somebody else offers him multiple years I'm OK with taking the draft pick and looking elsewhere.

Unless the Mets somehow find money for Cliff Lee (and based on this past year they will probably need to cut some payroll before they can get aggressive with anybody), I'd be looking for somebody who'd take a year and an option to be starter #5. That would probably wait until January.

There does seem to be decent depth at second base, which is encouraging.

Type 'A' and Type 'B' Free Agents

[u:3u67hhhe]Type A[/u:3u67hhhe]
Catchers: Victor Martinez (Bos), A.J. Pierzynski (CWS), Ramon Hernandez (Cin), Bengie Molina (Tex).

Relief Pitchers: Rafael Soriano (TB), Mariano Rivera (NYY), Matt Guerrier (Min), Scott Downs (Tor), Dan Wheeler (TB), Jason Frasor (Tor), Frank Francisco (Tex), Grant Balfour (TB), Arthur Rhodes (Cin).

[u:3u67hhhe]Type B[/u:3u67hhhe]

Putz (CWS), Jesse Crain (Min), Aaron Heilman (Ari), Chad Durbin (Phi), Chad Qualls (TB).

Losing a Type A FA results in getting both a 1st (or 2nd) round draft pick from the signing team plus a supplemental round pick
Losing a Type B FA results in getting an extra draft pick in the supplemental round
Both types are subject to properly offering arbitration ... yyybbb

Both of the above lists show the players in order of their rank within their position. That order can be used to determine which pick goes where if a team signs multiple FAs.

I wouldn't mind seeing Chase Lambin back in the organization. The same goes for Willie Collazo; I'm not sure why he's been getting starts, but he could be a decent lefty in the back of the pen.

RJ Swindle has a rep for throwing pitches in the 60 mph range, but he always puts up good AAA numbers. He could be fun, and possibly even effective in a LOOGY role.

It's sad to see Dontrelle Willis on that list.

We should definitely sign Al Albuquerque from the Rockies for the obvious reason.

I always had a crush on Josh Barfield for some reason, cause he's not very good. He'll be just 28 in Dec. I might try and nab him super cheap-o & invite him to ST, and get a Bisons jersey ready for him.

My adopted kid, C-Los Muniz, is a free agent. End of the line??? :'-(

Re: Behold, the 2010-11 Free Agents

At whom are the Phillies looking? As per Phillies blog Crashburn Alley/Phillies figurative groin-massager Jayson Stark, a wholelottafolk.

No Fuggin' Way
Jayson Werth (w/age, likely length-of-contract being prohibitive factors)

Coming Up on the Outside Rail
Magglio Ordonez
Andruw Jones
Pat Burrell

Hmm. HMM.
Jose Contreras (price being potentially prohibitive)
Pedro Feliciano
Hisanori Takahashi (CA seems to think he'd come cheaper/more team-friendly-in-contract than Feliciano; CA doesn't pay much attention to NY press/blogs)

Making my mouth smile:

General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. continues to talk up Ben Francisco, at least in a potential platoon with Domonic Brown -- or with Ross Gload if they decide Brown isn't ready. But the Phillies would still shop for another right-handed-hitting outfield bat. One name we've heard a lot: Jeff Francoeur, who has told friends he'd love to play for Charlie Manuel.

Re: Behold, the 2010-11 Free Agents

Listen up Sandy, here's my FA list (assuming Lee, Crawford and V-Mart are not gonna happen):

SP - Ill take Garland for the IP, and take a flyer on Capuano's upside. Harden? I'm not that crazy.
C - Torrealba or Olivo, to platoon with Thole.
LHRP - having lost 2 LHRPs, we need one from column A (Downs, Fuentes) and one from column B (Romero, DReyes, Beimel, Ohman)
2b - with Uggla gone, no obvious upgrades available, tho' i wouldn't mind Hudson for a year, or taking a flyer on LLopez as a general UT.

or i'll take Lee, Crawford and V-Mart... :)

Re: Behold, the 2010-11 Free Agents

Benoit's a Tigger, Kuroda remains a Trolley-Ducker, Ramon Hernandez is a Commie, Buck's a Fishie, and both Dan Meyer and Jose Contreras (2 yrs!) are Philthy.

My thoughts?

SP: Buy low, people-- if you're thinking Capuano, you're not thinking low enough, methinks. Javy Vazquez! Webb! The basement's the limit!
RP: I still think offering Feliciano arb makes sense; worst case, you've got the league's best LOOGY (seriously, peep the stats) for a shade over market price. If not, well... Alderson won't spend a first-round pick on middle-relief. I'm content to go cheapo (Romero's more expensive than Feliciano). Choate's cheap and good, as is DReyes... but I could go Fuentes as LOOGY/setup-py sort. Crain and Uehara also intrigue. Chan Ho II as swingman on the cheap? (Speaking of cheap, Manny Corpas now available for the league minimum, btw.)
IF: Nishioka looks interesting. That said, I like the idea of a Murphy/Turner/Tejada pu-pu-gasboard-- figure out what we've got in-house during 2011, then if we need to get splashy, there'll be more cash in 2012. Renteria does look like a cost-effective bench piece (this year's Cora, only half-good?).
