2011 Ticket Pricing

Information regarding 2011 ticket prices was apparently revealed (prematurely?) and then removed from the Mets website today.

The key information:

1. Rather than having Platinum (4), Gold (21), Silver (25), Bronze (21) and Value (10) price levels,
the Mets now have: Marquee (4), Premium (22), Classic (25) and Value (30).


Analysis: They basically eliminated the bronze tier and made them all value. The breakdown is as you'd expect: value games are weeknights, premium games are summer weekends, etc.

2. Almost all seats have a price reduction

I'll leave it to the Dave Howard spin-machine to sell you on percentages but in almost every category there was a reduction.

3. The only price increases were in the cheap seats for premium games.

Example: Promenade Reserved Infield was $35 for "Platinum" and $30 for "Gold" last year.
2011, it will be $45 for "Marquee" and $35 for "Premium."
Similar increases were found in the Promenade Reserved category.

Also, the cheapest tickets in the park increased $1 for value games over last year.

4. The Mets are offering season ticket holders a 10% discount off the single-game price.

No word if a discount will be offered to partial-season plan holders.

on a clarity level, it may look confusing but the seating and pricing page now describes which sections and rows each tier applies to.

$1 more expensive for the cheapest seat, but there are more of them at that value price.

Looks like a lot more tickets dropped into "sorta kinda affordable for the average guy/family" level.

More reasonably priced tickets for some of the field level stuff.

(Yankees seem to have raised prices, if you were curious)

They have a long, long way to go re: clarity.

In 2010, there were 41 seating categories with 5 different prices for each.
For 2011, they're down to 35 seating categories with 4 different prices for each.

Increased Exclusive Benefits and Services, Unique Experiences


FLUSHING, N.Y., November 3, 2010 - The New York Mets today announced a restructured ticket pricing program for 2011 that includes a reduction of ticket prices by an average of more than 14% from last season. In addition, season ticket, ticket plan and group ticket customers receive an additional 10% discount.
Within the 14%-plus average price decrease, the Mets have made a full range of market-based adjustments to Citi Field's 41,800 seats:

* Ticket prices for 62% of the ballpark have been reduced
* More than half of all seats have double-digit price reductions
* 18% of the seats have been cut by 20% or more
* 8% of seats have price decreases of 30% or more
* Several seat categories have modest increases that average approximately 5%

Season Ticket Holders will begin receiving their invoices - which reflect their additional 10% discounts - by next week.

Season Ticket Holders also will have access to once-in-a-lifetime opportunities through the new "Amazin' Mets Perks" (AMP) program of unique benefits and experiences. Season Ticket Holders who pay in full by December 15 will automatically be eligible for the "30-Day Amazin' Mets Perks" Daily Awards. Hundreds of winners will be chosen overall, with awards starting on November 21 and continuing daily to December 20.

The Mets have revised their variable pricing plan to four tiers named as followed: Marquee (four games), Premium (22), Classic (25) and Value (30).

The Mets have increased the number of tickets that cost $15 or less by 45% to 384,000 from 264,206 last season. Almost 2 million tickets, or 61% of total capacity, cost $50 or less, up from 54% in 2010. Single game tickets start at $12.

"The Mets are committed to providing quality and value to our fans," said Dave Howard, Executive Vice President, Business Operations. "We reduced ticket prices for 2011 based on fan feedback and marketplace information. We introduced Season Ticket Holder discounts and the 'Amazin' Mets Perks' program as a way to thank and reward them for their loyalty and commitment."

Well, they haven't announced anything in that regard yet, so we'll see. I hope they realize (and judging by the way they've conducted business in the past they do) that partial plans is really where they can hope to make some money. Probably they're trying to get season tickets first, logically, and the perks for 12/15 help them analyze how many seats they need/want to make into partial plan seats, and hopefully they'll offer perks in some regard.

In the 1990's I had a conversation with someone in the Mets offices who told me that the organization especially hated the partial plans in the field boxes and wished that there was a way to revoke all of those partial plans without creating a PR nightmare.

In the 1990's I had a conversation with someone in the Mets offices who told me that the organization especially hated the partial plans in the field boxes and wished that there was a way to revoke all of those partial plans without creating a PR nightmare.


I don't doubt it, even if it was a long long time ago, but with the way ticket prices and payrolls have skyrocketed since then, and the state of the economy..partial plans are the limits of peoples budgets..at best. I remember hearing rumors that the Mets didn't want to have partial plans in Citi Field at all.

It's impossible to sell the entire stadium out on season plans, because a large allocation of seats is claimed by MLB for the World Series. That number is a closely-guarded secret but I believe it's close to 10,000.

However, it is certainly possible to sell out of full-season equivalents (either season tickets, or combined partial-season plans). While the Mets haven't ever done this, many teams do: Cubs, Red Sox, Phillies, etc. and the Mets certainly were hoping to when they moved to Citi Field. The season and partial-season ticket base was at an all time high in 2008.
