Rabbitholing is my term for following an interesting link which leads to another interesting link which leads to another and another and eventually --- if I'm not careful --- to me becoming a desperately unproductive employee. I'm sure I'm not the only one living in such danger. So I thought it would be easier if we share the risk.
Start with one video at youtube, follow that to another, and go five steps, and report back. The next person can start with your last one, or start with any other one from your list.
Any Trouble --- "Playing Bogart" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-04atcBc5A Great Graham Maby-quality bassline, but not a hit. I wonder why?
Any Trouble --- "Second Choice" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sryujH_qX-4 Here they are playing nu-wave raggae to a "Louie Louie" chord sequence. Now I see why they weren't hitmakers, as the vocalist wasn't exactly telegenic.
Squeeze --- "Up the Junction" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3635AFfu0s Cheap early video. Jools miming synth lines on a piano and smoking a big ugly stogie. This song would never get over today with no chorus and the tagline not coming until the end.
Squeeze --- Cool for Cats on Top of the Pops (with the dancing girls) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pblSU5M1d1Y Chris Difford on lead vocals with nu wave chicks in spandex.
Ian Dury --- Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick (live) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6idHmoe5EM How do the Blockheads keep that groove going? If he did this today, most of that backing music would be sequenced.
These guys really bring it, with the sax player swqpping instruments for his solo, then playing them both(!). They may have been the Talking Heads of England.
Your turn down the rabbit hole.
