IRT - The Rally To Restore Sanity And/Or Fear

It's starting out with some songs by The Roots.

Re: IRT - The Rally To Restore Sanity And/Or Fear

John Legend joins The Roots. Which make sense - they recently collaborated on an album (and Legend has appeared on Colbert several times, including in the Colbert Christmas special. I still love his song about Nutmeg).

Edited 1 time(s), most recently on Oct 30 2010 08:12 PM

After about a 40 minute set by Legend and The Roots, the Mythbusters guys took the stage. They have the crowd doing The Wave on The Mall, which is actually pretty impressive to see on TV.

Jon Stewart takes the stage at 12:55.

Colbert then appears on stage (as if he's being brought up from the Fear Bunker by a Chilean miner-esque capsule) a couple of minutes later.

Cat Stevens/Yusef is there, and in good voice for Peace Train!

Re: IRT - The Rally To Restore Sanity And/Or Fear

Cat Stevens is followed by Ozzy Osbourne. And then the two of them play their songs over each other.

Only on Comedy Central can any of this make sense.

Steven Slater (the JetBlue flight attendant) and Teresa Giudice (a Real Housewife, or something like that) apologize for publicly losing their cool and advocate reasonable actions rather than meltdowns.

Re: IRT - The Rally To Restore Sanity And/Or Fear

Jon Stewart awards a Medal of Reasonableness to Armando Galarraga (who accepts via videotape) for his reasonableness in light of Jim Joyce's call that took away his perfect game.

Not to be outdone, Colbert awards a Medal of Fear to the news organizations that barred its employees from attending the rally. In their stead, the award is accepted by someone less fearful than they are - a 7-year-old girl.

Mavis Staples and Jeff Tweedy sing for the crowd.

Re: IRT - The Rally To Restore Sanity And/Or Fear

The second Medal of Reasonableness is awarded to Velma Hart, who asked several toughquestions of President Obama on CNN a few months ago. She made her points, but with respect.

The second Medal of Fear goes to Anderson Cooper, and is accepted by Cooper's tight black t-shirt.

Tim Meadows, as P. K. Winsome (a character he performs regularly on The Colbert Report), urges the crowd to buy souvenirs of the event.

Re: IRT - The Rally To Restore Sanity And/Or Fear

The third Medal of Reasonableness goes to wrestler Mick Foley, for exemplifying reasonableness everywhere except in his day job.

The third Medal of Fear is awarded to Mark Zuckerberg, for violating the privacy of Facebook's users. Colbert accepts the medal in lieu of Zuckerberg, and promises to post a picture of himself wearing it on his Facebook page.

The final award, the fourth Medal of Reasonableness, goes to Jacob Isom, who physically prevented a preacher from burning a Koran a couple of months ago.

This was followed up by Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow (and a taped cameo T.I.) performing a new song. Kid and Crow follow that up with another song.

BTW, this entire 3-hour rally has been aired without any commercial interruption.

I'm a librarian - there's no such thing as a stupid question ;)

Stewart and Colbert are debating Reason vs. Fear. This is the whole nut of the event, IMO.

I disagree irish. They have been nailing it on their shows. I wouldn't judge them by today's live performance.

I think the very fact that there seem to be roughly 6-gazillion people there means they haven't.

Re: IRT - The Rally To Restore Sanity And/Or Fear

The estimate is more like 150,000, but yeah.

Stewart is now addressing the crowd seriously, pleading for reason in our public discourse. That we can't solve our problems if we focus on polarization rather than our common goals.

There's another political event going on today closer to home.
President Obama is speaking in Bridgeport.
Wifey went.
I'll post her comments.

Why don't you do that in a different thread.

After Stewart's remarks, which were both intelligent and entertaining, Tony Bennett appears to sing America the Beautiful.

Stewart makes his closing remarks, thanking everyone.

The rally ends with everyone who appeared at the rally coming up on stage to sing, "I'll Take You There" (Mavis Staples singing lead).

I'm sure it will be repeated. Or at least an edited version will be.

I'm also guessing that the video will be available online at some point (sooner rather than later).

Was there. Was great

It was overflowing. The Metro trains from the outlying stations had 30-45 minute lines just to buy tickets. People were still arriving by subway at 2:00. Crowd was overlowed into the side streets on both sides of the mall. Amazingly, everyone was really nice, polite, and . . . well . . . sane. There really are nice people in this country!
