Centerfield is defending champ. Tradition says he kicks it off -- fields all the requests for new format/rule changes.

Of course I'll participate. I'm just thinking that I would want my match to happen either before or after those dates but that other matches might happen during the period I'm away. That being said I probably can get to a computer a time or two while I'm outta town.

Johnny Dickshot

1) declare eligibility

2) get randomly assigned "subject Mets"

3) get seeded

4) post your song vs. your opponent in a poll

5) room votes, ideally rewarding creativity

6) winner gets the losers unused "subject Mets," and advances to next round, etc etc

You didn't come into this life just to sit around a dugout bench did you? Well, did you?

Centerfield
Oct 20 2005 10:33 AM

I'd rather have more people involved...and if we fall short of 32 (which we likely will) we could have play in rounds or first-round byes. Kind of like qualifiers for the US Open and stuff. What do you guys think?

sharpie
Oct 20 2005 10:42 AM

I'd vote to let it ride til the end of the day. No way we'll get anywhere near 32. If there's, say, 20 then have a play-in round limited to those who weren't in it last year. We should start putting in numbers tomorrow.

Edgy DC
Oct 20 2005 10:51 AM

What about Dickshot's old idea (which I lke) that we have randomly assigned songs instead of randomly assigned subjects.

The random-subjects angle may have played itself out.

We can each throw out out six or eight songs into the pool and then knock out the non-starters before they get assigned.

ScarletKnight41
Oct 20 2005 10:59 AM

I don't like the random songs suggestion.

We all have diverse musical tastes here, and it's a way for us to express our individuality. Besides, songs that I might love you might not know, and vice versa. I think that would make the process a lot less fun to be stuck with tunes that we don't know or don't like.

I would vote a resounding NAY to that suggestion.

BTW, on the subject of songs, I think that the participants should name the songs that they are parodying, to make it easier for everyone to immediately understand the parody.

sharpie
Oct 20 2005 11:01 AM

I'd try it if the others want to do it that way. Last year, for example, I was singularly uninspired by my choices (when Mike Torrez is your most engaging candidate something is terribly terribly wrong). Having the panoply of Mets with an assigned song would be a whole different and kind of interesting challenge - that way multiple Mets could be involved.

Centerfield
Oct 20 2005 11:01 AM

I'm with Scarlet Knight. Nay to the random songs. I like the way it works now.

My question is this...for the play-in-rounds, will the participants have to use someone from their list? Or would the qualifiers be assigned one extra Met?

Or, instead, we could make the qualifiers interesting and say the song as to be about a current major-leaguer who is not currently a Met.

Discuss.

Willets Point
Oct 20 2005 11:02 AM

I second Miss Scarlett.

Also, I think the first round should be group play like the World Cup.

sharpie
Oct 20 2005 11:05 AM

There could be 3-team brackets in the first round and we could award Schaefer points.

(on edit): Might want to try an experimental assigned song contest sometime during those long winter months.

Yancy Street Gang
Oct 20 2005 11:12 AM

Hahahaha. Sounds like something from Philosophy 101. Prove your fellow CPFers exist. Elster88 is sure you've all heard the story of the student who had a final exam question to prove a chair existed that was in the middle of the room. He wrote "What chair?" and turned in his paper, getting an A.

Here's an idea, since it seems we're at 23 players or so:

Cut it off at 24. Then do it like baseball and split into 3 divisions: the 3 winners plus the "wild card" player (the one who gets the most losing votes in the divisional finals) square off in the final four.

ScarletKnight41
Oct 24 2005 09:04 AM

Ooh - that's an interesting format. I like it.

MFS62
Oct 24 2005 09:44 AM

How many songs would we have to write in that format.
Quick math tells me seven to win your division (head-to-head) plus two more to win it all (semifinals and finals).
Based on the speed with which past contests have been posted and voted upon, that format could take us into the 2008 Presidential elections.
I prefer the current bracket format. If we have extra teams, give prior winners (if necessary all prior finalists) first round byes.

While we could all get our numbers any time (sooner the better) the play-in round has to happen before we get into the first full round.

Edgy DC
Oct 25 2005 04:12 PM

My thinking is that the guys in the play-in round get four players to choose from for their round. Then those winners shed their remaining players and we start all over distributing five new players to everybody.

Else, we have them with the disadvantage of spending one good player, but with the advantage of gaining X number of players from their extra opponent.

ScarletKnight41
Oct 25 2005 04:37 PM

I could live with letting those in the play-in round keep their opponents' players. I think of that as balancing out their disadvantage of writing five songs instead of four, as well as having to compete against the four most highly seeded opponents.

sharpie
Oct 25 2005 04:53 PM

Another option would be to do away with the notion of capturing your opponent's players. You'd get 5 players and you've got to write songs about 4 of them to win (or 5 if you were in the play-in round). Makes you start thinking earlier about a Rob Gardner song.

seawolf17
Oct 25 2005 04:54 PM

Another option would be to do away with the notion of capturing your opponent's players. You'd get 5 players and you've got to write songs about 4 of them to win (or 5 if you were in the play-in round).

We'd get some messed up songs by the time the final rolled around.

I think losers' players should be placed into a pool and each time someone wins a round they can trade one of their players for a player in the pool. This would be on a first-come, first-serve basis providing an incentive for participants to post their goddam songs in a timely manner.

Edgy DC

sharpie
Oct 25 2005 05:41 PM

OK, lets say I trade my Chris Cannizerro for Mackey Sasser -- then I'd feel that I really should do a Mackey Sasser song rather than one of the remaining ones. I like the idea of having to go at least 2 deep in your initial draw, maybe capture only if you get past 2 rounds.

ScarletKnight41
Oct 25 2005 05:47 PM

You know what, I liked the way we had it last year, with the winner gaining the loser's unused players. I think it made for more interesting songs and, thus, a more entertaining contest overall.

Where do you get 25 guys? By my count the finalists would have 1 player each at the end because you have to give up a player in your hand to take one from the pool. Besides, each of the finalists would have the same advantage. And if it really is easy they've deserved it. And maybe it will keep them from waiting until freaking January to post the songs.

sharpie
Oct 25 2005 05:57 PM

But there'd be 25 or so discards so if you have your choice of all of them you in effect do have a hand of 25. This should get harder, not easier, for the champs.

(on edit): Is Eric Hillman the only player whose height is listed in addition to his position and years?

Willets Point
Oct 25 2005 06:01 PM

How 'bout if the pool of discarded players is emptied after each round (that is after each participant makes his/her trades with the pool).

Centerfield
Oct 25 2005 06:03 PM

I like Scarlett's idea. Keep last year's rule about capturing guys.

Winner of the play-in round has to burn one of his guys, but gets the benefit of capturing his opponents' guys as a trade-off for having to go an extra round.

I'm game.

Willets' proposal is ok in theory, but it's unfair to those who have their songs ready only to be delayed by a tardy opponent. If we want to set stricter deadlines for posting songs I can live with that though...

Easy there Edge.

I could be looking for a Jersey Girl after a tasty meal and kicking the crap out of D'Dad...

Speaking of Jersey Girls...

Ah I shouldn't drive this thread in that direction...

I was going to do a bit of the "Shan na na na na na na naaahs" from that classic tune, but then I'd hear Bruce in my head the rest of the night.

I meant to say it was a good idea to only get 1 extra subject per victory, because under the old system you'd collect so many after knocking off a couple guys it got less challenging.

This is why I said on page 1 that i was done discsussing rule changes.,

ScarletKnight41

I could live with the winner getting to pick one of the loser's players.

Believe me, as a guy who has had the good fortune to advance a few times, it does not get easier when you gobble up the losers' dregs, because they will have typically used up their best subjects (unless they get crazy and open with Tom Sturdivant).

It just gives you more poison from which to choose.

And, though we may disagree on what effects that winning has on the winners, so what, just so long as both winners have the same advantage or disadvantage?

TheOldMole
Oct 25 2005 11:41 PM

I don't understand any of the rules. And I have no confidence in my ability to advance beyond the first round.

Rockin' Doc
Oct 25 2005 11:43 PM

The nice thing about Johnny D's suggestion that the winner gets to pick only one player from a vanquished opponent is that each participant would have 5 players for each successive round. The problem is that you would have your own dregs that you can't seem to find any inspiration for and only one from your opponent.

I think the contest worked well as it was set up last year. I agree with Edgy that it never seems to get easier with each round.

Edgy DC

An interview with LF, interviewed after his "What Do You With a Lenny Harris?" bested Wide BeeGee's "Pratt!"

Biff Thunderpants: Congratulations, LF. You just squeezed past Widey for the victory.

LF: You mean I have to come up with another one of these things?

Biff Thunderpants: Yup, that's the way it works.

LF: Shit!
He never did, forfeiting in the next round, and he hasn't returned to competition since.

It's a sad story.

Give me six numbers. Each corresponds to one of the 500 most accomplished Mets in Met history. I'll tell you who you get shortly after you tell me your numbers.

You choose one and write a song lyric parody about him. (Also permitted are parodies of poems or original lyric poems, though I'm pretty sure nobody has ever gone that route.)

When you're ready with your first one, check and make sure Willets (your first-round opponent is ready. I'll start a voting thread (or you can) and both songs are posted within. We vote which is better and he or she with the most votes after 24 (or maybe 48, we haven't decided) hours wins.

As usually happens when I deal, I've got a half dozen Ed Glynn songs lined up, but can't see anything in my own hand.

I'm going away for the weekend, leaving at noon. Somebody get Valadius to log on with his six digits before then.

Valadius

Post what numbers?

Sorry, I've been busy with a new girlfriend.

Wait, what are we doing with these numbers?

How about 27?

]Sorry, I've been busy with a new girlfriend

but you're in college, so if you're anything like me you'll be busy with a new new girlfriend by tommorow night...

...only kidding

as for the numbers you pick 6 between 1 and 500....dont pick any that were already picked....you might want to list extra numbers since many were used already

Edgy DC

VALADIUS: Hey sweetie, help me pick 6 numbers between 1 & 500.
GWU CHICK: What for?
VALADIUS: Well, I'm in this online forum of Mets fans and we're having a contest to write song parodies about Mets players.
GWU CHICK: [sotto voice] Omigod, I'm dating a total geek!
VALADIUS: What's that?
GWU CHICK: Oh, nothing...
VALADIUS: So you want to help me pick these numbers and then we can go to dinner?
GWU CHICK: I just remembered ... I can't go to dinner tonight ... I, uh, have to, uh, ... wash my hair, ... yes my hair needs a thorough washing.
VALADIUS: Uh, all right...
GWU CHICK: Bye...

]Sharpie, you just can't win with Ed Glyn.

]But the first loss turned into the twenty-seventh one

I hope that Dickshot isn't prophesying a 27 parody losing streak for me. I've lost 2 in a row so at this rate the 2031 contest is looking good.

While I am hereby declaring that I won't use Glynn this round, I am considering fitting him into my entry and will give extra consideration to anyone else who mentions him in theirs.

Willets...

ROFL!!!

Johnny Dickshot
Oct 28 2005 11:57 AM

I was looking for inspiration last night and ANTHONY YOUNG REVISITED is my favorite CPF parody ever.

If I may:

ANTHONY YOUNG REVISITED

Oh God said to Anthony “Lose me a ton.”
AY said “Man, you must be puttin’ me on.”
God say “No”. AY say “What?”
God say “You can do what you want to but
The next time you see me comin’, you best be givin’ up runs.”
AY say “Why should I be gettin’ all this losing done?”
God say “it is written, Anthony Young.”

Well Ol’ Anthony had a curve he’d throw
Set a Tex League record with 9 wins in a row
He asked Al Harazin where can I go
Al said there’s only one place I know
AY said “tell me quick man my arm it is a gun”
Ol’ Al knew how may game’s he’d won
And said “Shea’s the place for Anthony Young.”

Well Joe the McIlvaine said to Dallas the Green
I got forty red white and blue rookies
And a thousand outfielders that can’t swing
Do you know where I can get rid of these things?
And Dallas the Green said let me think for a minute son
And he said yes I think it can be very easily done
They’ll take ‘em all once they see Anthony Young.

Now the fifth starter on the tenth night
Won his second straight game under the ’92 lights
His complexion, you know, was not so white
Thought he could step into that Dwight Gooden site, fans said hmm you’re right
Let us tell the world ‘bout who we brought up in ‘91
But the first loss turned into the twenty-seventh one
And they were all charged to Anthony Young.

Now the former pitcher he is very bored
No one talks ‘bout his Tex League Award
But the 27 losses still makes folks fall on the floor
They forget anyone did that kind of thing before
But yes he thinks it can again be very easily done
Just have a long losing streak start to run
And they’ll all be talkin’ ‘bout Anthony Young.

The Sturdivant

S (sss) – T (ttt) – U (uuu) – R (rrr) – D (ddd) – I (iii)
Sturdi-Vant!

Sturdivant if you want to, you can leave that lead behind
Cause you’re Tom Sturdivant and you don’t suck by chance
And you’re no friend of mine
I say, he can’t throw where he want to,
A place where they will never find
And they hit that swill far out of this world
Leave the real one far behind,
Tom Sturdivant

When we went to the bullpen, this old man could make you cry
He could play for eight teams and still get released
His middle name should’ve been “Goodbye”
I Say, his ERA was five-point-nine, his record was nil-and-nil
And he’d get real booed and totally screwed
And he’d act like an imbecile

Sturdivant, Sturdivant, throwin’ that knuckleball
Sturdivant, Sturdivant, Rojas of ‘64
Sturdivant, Sturdivant, ultimate journeyman
Sturdivant, Sturdivant, never shoulda taken the chance, ah-an-ance
Tom Sturdivant!
Oh well the Sturdivant
Ah yes the Sturdivant

S (sss) – T (ttt) – U (uuu) – R (rrr) – D (ddd) – I (iii)
Sturdi-Vant!

Sturdivant if you want to, if you don’t mind a long night
As long as we choose it, he’s gonna lose it
Baseballs on a non-stop flight

Sturdivant if you want to, we can leave that lead behind
Cause you’re Tom Sturdivant and you don’t stand a chance
Better get your ass on the pine

Sturdivant, Sturdivant, every pitch out of control
Sturdivant, Sturdivant, one bounce off the wall
Sturdivant, Sturdivant, should’ve just pitched in Japan
Sturdivant, Sturdivant everybody's reachin’ the stands-ah-an-ands!

Oh Well Tom Sturdivant!
Ah yes Tom Sturdivant!
Oh well Tom Sturdivant!
Oh well Tom Sturdivant!
Oh yes Tom Sturdivant!
Oh the Sturdivant, yeah!
Oh it's the Sturdivant!
It's Tom Sturdivant!
Well it's Sturdivant!
Oh it's Tom Sturdivant!
Oh it's Tom Sturdivant!
Oh it's Tom Sturdivant!
Oh it's Tom Sturdivant!

I don't know if I'll be around Friday morning, plus that extends the voting into the weekend, which is usually not good for optimum voting. Thursday evening is a better time for me.

You can start any time after 6:00 pm.

Elster88

We should slow it down a little bit though. It's not even December yet. We need something to fill up the dead months. The only football talk we get is pig roast plans, and the only basketball talk we get is Vic convincing himself that the Knicks aren't an awful team. And we lost all wrestling news after PiazzaFan ran off when everyone made fun of his wrestling thread.
