Isn't it time...to start thinking about the 2005 Song Parody Contest?
Johnny Dickshot Oct 19 2005 03:04 PM |
Yup (c)
sharpie Oct 19 2005 03:08 PM |
I thought it happened once the World Series was over. That being said I'm outta town from November 3 through 8 or so but somehow or other I'll manage. Might not get to vote on a couple.
Edgy DC Oct 19 2005 03:10 PM |
Centerfield is defending champ. Tradition says he kicks it off -- fields all the requests for new format/rule changes.

Vote? You're not going to participate? Later
sharpie Oct 19 2005 03:22 PM |
Of course I'll participate. I'm just thinking that I would want my match to happen either before or after those dates but that other matches might happen during the period I'm away. That being said I probably can get to a computer a time or two while I'm outta town.

I've grown weary of format-change discussion. Let's just proceed as usual and git it on.

CF, whaddaya think? Do we cap it, or have a play-in round?
holychicken Oct 20 2005 09:31 AM |
If you guys want to cap it and there is someone more deserving than myself who wants a spot, they can have mine. I will probably end up going out in the first round anyway.

Edgy DC Oct 20 2005 10:07 AM |

Centerfield Oct 20 2005 10:33 AM |
I'd rather have more people involved...and if we fall short of 32 (which we likely will) we could have play in rounds or first-round byes. Kind of like qualifiers for the US Open and stuff. What do you guys think?
sharpie Oct 20 2005 10:42 AM |
I'd vote to let it ride til the end of the day. No way we'll get anywhere near 32. If there's, say, 20 then have a play-in round limited to those who weren't in it last year. We should start putting in numbers tomorrow.
Edgy DC Oct 20 2005 10:51 AM |
What about Dickshot's old idea (which I lke) that we have randomly assigned songs instead of randomly assigned subjects.
ScarletKnight41 Oct 20 2005 10:59 AM |
I don't like the random songs suggestion.
sharpie Oct 20 2005 11:01 AM |
I'd try it if the others want to do it that way. Last year, for example, I was singularly uninspired by my choices (when Mike Torrez is your most engaging candidate something is terribly terribly wrong). Having the panoply of Mets with an assigned song would be a whole different and kind of interesting challenge - that way multiple Mets could be involved.
Centerfield Oct 20 2005 11:01 AM |
I'm with Scarlet Knight. Nay to the random songs. I like the way it works now.
Willets Point Oct 20 2005 11:02 AM |

There could be 3-team brackets in the first round and we could award Schaefer points.
Yancy Street Gang Oct 20 2005 11:12 AM |
I would join, but I'm so non-musical it's pathetic. And all of my songs would probably be to the tune of "I Think We're Alone Now."

Ooh - that's an interesting format. I like it.
MFS62 Oct 24 2005 09:44 AM |
How many songs would we have to write in that format.

Rockin' Doc Oct 24 2005 09:44 AM |
I'm for whatever format requires the least effort on my part. I'm rather lazy when it comes to this type of stuff.
sharpie Oct 24 2005 09:47 AM |
It would take 5 songs. Three to win the division, 2 to win the final four. That is one more song than in the 16-team format we had last year.

MFS62 Oct 25 2005 03:50 PM |
Difficult to interpret with my browser.
Willets Point Oct 25 2005 03:51 PM |
Correct.
sharpie Oct 25 2005 03:53 PM |
While we could all get our numbers any time (sooner the better) the play-in round has to happen before we get into the first full round.
Edgy DC Oct 25 2005 04:12 PM |
My thinking is that the guys in the play-in round get four players to choose from for their round. Then those winners shed their remaining players and we start all over distributing five new players to everybody.
ScarletKnight41 Oct 25 2005 04:37 PM |
I could live with letting those in the play-in round keep their opponents' players. I think of that as balancing out their disadvantage of writing five songs instead of four, as well as having to compete against the four most highly seeded opponents.
sharpie Oct 25 2005 04:53 PM |
Another option would be to do away with the notion of capturing your opponent's players. You'd get 5 players and you've got to write songs about 4 of them to win (or 5 if you were in the play-in round). Makes you start thinking earlier about a Rob Gardner song.
seawolf17 Oct 25 2005 04:54 PM |
Yikes. Tough first-round draw. Hey, Valadius, don't you have midterms coming up or something? Wouldn't want you to fail out of college in your first semester on our account.
Edgy DC Oct 25 2005 05:22 PM |
Another option would be to do away with the notion of capturing your opponent's players. You'd get 5 players and you've got to write songs about 4 of them to win (or 5 if you were in the play-in round).
Willets Point Oct 25 2005 05:26 PM |
I think losers' players should be placed into a pool and each time someone wins a round they can trade one of their players for a player in the pool. This would be on a first-come, first-serve basis providing an incentive for participants to post their goddam songs in a timely manner.
Edgy DC Oct 25 2005 05:29 PM |
Wilets has an idea. Field?
ScarletKnight41 Oct 25 2005 05:35 PM |
I'm up for almost any set of rules so long as I can pick my own songs.
sharpie Oct 25 2005 05:41 PM |
OK, lets say I trade my Chris Cannizerro for Mackey Sasser -- then I'd feel that I really should do a Mackey Sasser song rather than one of the remaining ones. I like the idea of having to go at least 2 deep in your initial draw, maybe capture only if you get past 2 rounds.
ScarletKnight41 Oct 25 2005 05:47 PM |
You know what, I liked the way we had it last year, with the winner gaining the loser's unused players. I think it made for more interesting songs and, thus, a more entertaining contest overall.
Johnny Dickshot Oct 25 2005 05:48 PM |
Yes. Having 25 guys to make songs with in the final round is way too easy.
Willets Point Oct 25 2005 05:54 PM |
Where do you get 25 guys? By my count the finalists would have 1 player each at the end because you have to give up a player in your hand to take one from the pool. Besides, each of the finalists would have the same advantage. And if it really is easy they've deserved it. And maybe it will keep them from waiting until freaking January to post the songs.
sharpie Oct 25 2005 05:57 PM |
But there'd be 25 or so discards so if you have your choice of all of them you in effect do have a hand of 25. This should get harder, not easier, for the champs.
Willets Point Oct 25 2005 06:01 PM |
How 'bout if the pool of discarded players is emptied after each round (that is after each participant makes his/her trades with the pool).
Centerfield Oct 25 2005 06:03 PM |
I like Scarlett's idea. Keep last year's rule about capturing guys.
Edgy DC Oct 25 2005 06:04 PM |
So far.
Edgy DC Oct 25 2005 06:05 PM |
Well, tradition says CF has extra pull in this discussion. Do you think they should get dealt an extra player at the beginning, CF?
MFS62 Oct 25 2005 06:08 PM |
Wouldn't that mean that all matches would have to be posted, and voted upon, concurrently? Didn't we do them sequentially in the past? Or was the timing dictated by who said they were ready? Later
Centerfield Oct 25 2005 06:09 PM |
I don't see why that would be necessary...as the winner of the play-in round will have 8 guys to chose from rather than the 5 everyone else has.

Johnny Dickshot Oct 25 2005 11:13 PM |
I meant to say it was a good idea to only get 1 extra subject per victory, because under the old system you'd collect so many after knocking off a couple guys it got less challenging.
ScarletKnight41 Oct 25 2005 11:16 PM |
I could live with the winner getting to pick one of the loser's players.
Edgy DC Oct 25 2005 11:32 PM Edited 1 time(s), most recently on Oct 25 2005 11:57 PM |
Believe me, as a guy who has had the good fortune to advance a few times, it does not get easier when you gobble up the losers' dregs, because they will have typically used up their best subjects (unless they get crazy and open with Tom Sturdivant).
TheOldMole Oct 25 2005 11:41 PM |
I don't understand any of the rules. And I have no confidence in my ability to advance beyond the first round.
Rockin' Doc Oct 25 2005 11:43 PM |
The nice thing about Johnny D's suggestion that the winner gets to pick only one player from a vanquished opponent is that each participant would have 5 players for each successive round. The problem is that you would have your own dregs that you can't seem to find any inspiration for and only one from your opponent.
Edgy DC Oct 26 2005 12:17 AM |

Give me six numbers. Each corresponds to one of the 500 most accomplished Mets in Met history. I'll tell you who you get shortly after you tell me your numbers. You choose one and write a song lyric parody about him. (Also permitted are parodies of poems or original lyric poems, though I'm pretty sure nobody has ever gone that route.) When you're ready with your first one, check and make sure Willets (your first-round opponent is ready. I'll start a voting thread (or you can) and both songs are posted within. Mole, I'll need a sixth number for you, since you'll have the extra round.
seawolf17 Oct 26 2005 03:31 PM |
17, 117, 217, 317, 417 for me.
SwitchHitter Oct 26 2005 03:33 PM |
16, 240, 419, 315, 279 and 380
Edgy DC Oct 26 2005 03:39 PM |
OK, please see. Willets Point, The Old Mole, Valadius, Seawolf, mlbbaseballtalk, holy chicken, Yancy Street Gang, and switchhitter all need to provide six numbers, as you will be playing in an extra round. If you are one of these peeps and provided only five, please add a sixth. If you are one of these peeps and provided six, thank you and I'm sorry to waste your time with this message.

Hey, Seawolf, 22 is mine, back off.
seawolf17 Oct 26 2005 03:47 PM |
Damn you and your numbers.
seawolf17 Oct 26 2005 03:48 PM |
So we e-mail our parody to you, and then you post the poll with both songs? When do we do this?
Yancy Street Gang Oct 26 2005 03:49 PM |
Here's my sixth number:

You chat back and forth with your enemy about when your are ready. When you are agreed to meet, I (or some other third party) posts a polling thread, and each of you then posts your song in the thread.
Yancy Street Gang Oct 26 2005 04:15 PM |
If it's to be 24 hours, it should only be posted on a Monday through Thursday. Traffic is lighter on weekends.

I hope that Dickshot isn't prophesying a 27 parody losing streak for me. I've lost 2 in a row so at this rate the 2031 contest is looking good. While I am hereby declaring that I won't use Glynn this round, I am considering fitting him into my entry and will give extra consideration to anyone else who mentions him in theirs.

I don't know if I'll be around Friday morning, plus that extends the voting into the weekend, which is usually not good for optimum voting. Thursday evening is a better time for me. You can start any time after 6:00 pm.

Elster88 Nov 03 2005 09:58 AM |
We should slow it down a little bit though. It's not even December yet. We need something to fill up the dead months. The only football talk we get is pig roast plans, and the only basketball talk we get is Vic convincing himself that the Knicks aren't an awful team. And we lost all wrestling news after PiazzaFan ran off when everyone made fun of his wrestling thread.

When EZBoard froze us at the same player for months on end I was stuck with Gaspar and thus grew fond of him.

I lost with Gaspar last year. KC has redeemed him.

I say no. So long as we do it mid-week I think 24 is enough. Who wants to be hanging out that long?

The drama of 48 seems like a momentous thing, until you realize that you get 25 votes in the first 24 hours and two in the second.
