New Free Agents Of Note

This is a thread to track those players outrighted to minors who refused their assignments--and who might be valuable for our 2006 team.

28-year old D'Angelo Jimenez, 2B
2005: 105 AB, .229 AVG/.319 OBP/.295 SLG/.615 OPS
AA: .278/.404 OBP/.422 SLG/.826 OPS

2004 (563 AB): .270/.364/.394/.758
2003 (561 AB): .273/.349/.415/.764
2002 (429 AB): .252/.330/.347/.677

A terrible 2005, but he was pretty solid as a regular between 2002 & 2004. We could do far, far worse than having Jimenez be our back-up option at 2B. He spent a lot of his time at AA playing shortstop, so he could be valuable as a backup.

28-year old Chris Booker, RHP, RP
2005 AAA: 65 IP, 45 H, 28 BB, 91 K

Crazy good K/9 right there. Definitely worth a look--maybe a good minor league signing.

26-year old Bernie Castro, 2B

2005 MLB: 80 AB, .288 AVG/.360 OBP/.350 SLG/.710 OPS, 6 SB, 2 CS
2005 AAA: 502 AB, .315 AVG/.368 OBP/.382 SLG/.750 OPS, 41 SB, 6 CS

Speedster who's always been able to get on base but doesn't have much pop. If his defense is good, he'd make a good Plan B for us.

Whoa whoa whoa. Bernie Castro is a free agent? The dude filled in for Brian Roberts quite well at the end of the season in Baltimore, batting leadoff most games. Pick him up.

We could have an entire bench of guys named Castro. Is Raul available? Or Bernadette?

Bernie Castro would definetaly make a good backup at 2B.
i'm not really a Jimenez fan but he's better than many others we've had as a backup.

Payton would make a nice fourth outfielder if we trade Floyd or Cameron.

And just to clarify, when I said backup option, I meant if we don't sign a name 2B, we use them as our stater--or platoon them with one of our kids.

Mark Bellhorn becomes a free agent. He had a terrible 2005 (better than Matsui or Cairo, however, with his .681 OPS), but he's another guy I'd take a flyer on. He earned $2.7M last year and is sure to get a sizeable paycut.

Elster88 thinks that Bellhorn would only be a bench option, at best, and Elster88 likes all three of the backup middle infielders from '05 better. Plus, all we need to do is bring two of them back. Elster88 votes for Woodward and Marlon.

Haven't Bellhorn's previous employers not been too happy about his glovework, never mind his massive strikeouts. I'm with Elster88, Woody and Marlon are better options.
