Mets E-Bay Baubles of the Day 2005

Two overhead subway posters.

I have no idea why I just locked in a bid. It just happened faster than I could think.

That $14.00 shipping is killer. If you are mets44cam, I apologize for outbidding you, and if you want to take this over $16.00, the placards are yours.

Yancy Street Gang
Oct 11 2005 10:25 AM

If that was Woody Flynn instead of Doug, you wouldn't be feeling bidder's remorse.

I think they're pretty cool, though. I don't remember a time when the Mets sales pitch indicated that we should go to Shea to see Frank Taveras and Doug Flynn.

Edgy DC
Oct 11 2005 10:34 AM

I sure as Hell remember the campaign, but not those particular posters.

Everywhere we went that summer, it was "I'm Lee Mazzilli. Come out to Shea this summer and see what a Brooklyn boy can do in Queens."

That campaign was one of the first changes brought in by Doubleday, and "The Magic is Back," of course became the genesis for every season now having a slogan of it's own, not to mention the Magic Hat in centerfield.

Flynnie's has about the same number of characters, but a larger font size. What a bunch of racists Doubleday hired. The Taveras also features "short stop" spelled as two words. You won't see that very often any longer.

Johnny Dickshot
Oct 11 2005 11:22 AM

"Short stop" in 2 words is jarring but not as bad for me as "homerun" spelled as 1 word.

I do have a soft spot for "base ball" however.

Edgy DC
Oct 11 2005 11:46 AM

Calls for a committee on usage standarization continue to go unanswered.

I know I write homerun about 30% of the time. I just see it a lot and fool myself into thinking it's standard. It's amazing. It's perhaps the most defining play in baseball and a century and a half in we still can't agree on how to spell it.

Edgy DC
Oct 11 2005 12:01 PM

I'm the reluctant winner!

Anybody using my master bathroom in the near future will be treated to the idle threats of New York's most power-shorted doubleplay combo ever. (Zero homers in 1,005 at-bats for Taveras and Flynn that season.)

Edgy DC
Oct 11 2005 01:08 PM

edgydc, thanks for bidding on the 2 NY Met
posters. Would you be interesed in a 3rd
(Steve Henderson) for an additional $6.00?
no extra for shipping, I'll just add it to the other
2. Some guy won it and hasn't paid. Let me
know thanks, Tom Wai-Shek

Tom, you're freakin' killing me here.

At the same time, I was outbid on the 1965 media guide and I'm letting it go.

Yancy Street Gang
Oct 11 2005 01:33 PM

Wow, you gotta go for the Steve Henderson.

I just hope you don't have to enlarge your bathroom to make room for it.

Edgy DC
Oct 11 2005 01:44 PM

Oh, I promise myself: "Library items only, Edgy! No memoribilia!"

But go figure me today as I let the rare media guide go but jump on the subway posters.

I'll talk it over with Steve Henderson during my future bowel movements. See what he thinks.

Edgy DC
Oct 18 2005 04:46 PM

Today's gee-gaw is a game-worn Steve Trachsel jersey.

A Binghamton Mets game-worn Steve Trachsel jersey (currrently going for $105.21). I can't find Trach's stats from his Bingo stint. The guy is also pushing an Aarom Baldiris, David Bacani, and Tim McNab (McWho?).

Edgy DC

By the time I posted those, their auctions had probably ended. You still have a few minutes to grab four 1986 World Series Tickets.

Considering the guy's username is "binghamton_mets"... I'm going to guess that the team is releasing these on eBay, not some guy. Clements, Hietpas, Hill, Caligiuri, Edwards, Harper, and Malek all available now.

Those games have played already so there's no point in buying those tickets.

Those posters are cool and way unique - just picture them framed in your
Mets' memoriabilia room one day one on top of the other. It's ok not to only
collect paper when you stumble on something that very few people have.

Edgy DC
Oct 24 2005 02:54 PM

Beware the swoosh.

Today we have a 1963 program from a game hosted by the Salinas Mets. The condition seems excellent. If you look closely, you can see the thumbnail shots of the players on the inside cover.

Edgy DC
Oct 24 2005 03:02 PM

This guy claims to offer the first home run hit by Lastings Milledge in the Appalachian League.

Impressive, thought I, as that was likely his first stop, making this actually Milledge's first home run as a professional.

Except, according to The Baseball Cube, Milledge didn't hit any homers in the Appy League.

Edgy DC
Oct 24 2005 03:19 PM

A real prize is this 1957 Giants media guide. (The listing incorrectly places the team in San Francisco already.)

I was going to bid on it, but the only future Mets on the team were Willie Mays and Wes Westrum.

Besides it looks like it has holes for binder rings on the lleft and for a comb binding on top.

Davey Johnson's signed lineup card from a game in 1986, with what I guess are the changes in the ump's hand.

I just bought a 2-disc DVD of which the first disc is a basic highlight film of the '86 WS and the second disc is billed as "most of the original game footage from Game Six." I ended up buying it directly from the guy's website instead of on eBay because he didn't accept PayPal. I can PM (or post, I don't want to be an advertiser for the guy though I will if enough people are interested) the website to anyone else who wants to buy it.

I'm assuming most of you won't be interested because you probably all have video tape of every game from the entire 1986 season. I'm the loser who doesn't have Game Six on tape.

Elster88
Nov 04 2005 10:57 AM

Second disc is MLB's DVD version of Game 6's entry in their "Greatest Games" VHS series from, I want to say early 1990's

Its not badly chopped up as you'll get the innings where scoring happened, but innings aren't complete, example, you join the bottom of the tenth as Keith is flying out

This year MLB, with new video partners A&E and Hart Video, have stepped up the plate and released two great sets. One is the 2004 Red Sox featuring not just all 4 WS games and WS Highlight film but all 7 ALCS games in their ENTIRETY! And the second is shinning the spotlight on the Yankee dynastay from 96-2001. All 4 WS winning highlight films (2001 was the first to be released on DVD format) and 5 complete WS games selected from those WS, Game 5 is the 2000 representitive (note, all of the games are in decent rotation on YES's Yankee Classics, but the audio/video on the DVD is FOX all the way, YES uses Sterling/Kay on their broadcasts)

Sadly I had a real piece of junk VCR back in 1986, I'm pretty sure it was the first one we ever bought and it pretty much crapped out on me that October. I don't recall if I tried taping the 88 NLCS, but by 1999 my VCR was up to the task of recording all Met postseason games

Course by next year I may have a DVD recorder that can record off TV, and of course now I can pre-record on TVio instead of being nervous that the tape will go out

Ah the technology age...

Steve

I don't have a game-used taste, thank God, but I do have Kingman taste. This claims to be a game-used Kong bat from 1976 and perhaps used in an All-Star game by the big enigma. I didn't know bats had dimpled ends yet.

A signed 1962 photo.

An "original" Mr. Met bobble-head bank.

What's with the orange bill on the cap. Was Mr. Met mascotting for the Tides? He also seems to have two pairs of eyebrows.

Not necessarily Mets-related, but Sotheby's just listed several hundred items from baseball history on eBay that will blow your mind. Hope you all have some extra money lying around to add to your collection.

How about a scorecard from Cy Young's 1904 perfect game? A Babe Ruth-Lou Gehrig signed baseball? A Ty Cobb game-used bat? Joe Jackson's "Black Betsy" bat? How about the original Heisman trophy? The Braves hat Hank Aaron wore when he hit #715? Leo Durocher's 1947 NL Championship ring? This is some pretty wild stuff.

Edgy DC
Nov 30 2005 11:11 PM

OK, so you don't want a championship ring? Here's the kind of thing I could fall for...
