Mets E-Bay Baubles of the Day 2005

Two overhead subway posters. I have no idea why I just locked in a bid. It just happened faster than I could think. That $14.00 shipping is killer. If you are mets44cam, I apologize for outbidding you, and if you want to take this over $16.00, the placards are yours.

If that was Woody Flynn instead of Doug, you wouldn't be feeling bidder's remorse. I think they're pretty cool, though. I don't remember a time when the Mets sales pitch indicated that we should go to Shea to see Frank Taveras and Doug Flynn.

I sure as Hell remember the campaign, but not those particular posters. Everywhere we went that summer, it was "I'm Lee Mazzilli. Come out to Shea this summer and see what a Brooklyn boy can do in Queens." That campaign was one of the first changes brought in by Doubleday, and "The Magic is Back," of course became the genesis for every season now having a slogan of it's own, not to mention the Magic Hat in centerfield. Flynnie's has about the same number of characters, but a larger font size. What a bunch of racists Doubleday hired. The Taveras also features "short stop" spelled as two words. You won't see that very often any longer.

"Short stop" in 2 words is jarring but not as bad for me as "homerun" spelled as 1 word. I do have a soft spot for "base ball" however.

Calls for a committee on usage standarization continue to go unanswered. I know I write homerun about 30% of the time. I just see it a lot and fool myself into thinking it's standard. It's amazing. It's perhaps the most defining play in baseball and a century and a half in we still can't agree on how to spell it.

Today's gee-gaw is a game-worn Steve Trachsel jersey. A Binghamton Mets game-worn Steve Trachsel jersey (currrently going for $105.21). I can't find Trach's stats from his Bingo stint. The guy is also pushing an Aarom Baldiris, David Bacani, and Tim McNab (McWho?).

Those posters are cool and way unique - just picture them framed in your Mets' memoriabilia room one day one on top of the other. Beware the swoosh. Today we have a 1963 program from a game hosted by the Salinas Mets. The condition seems excellent. If you look closely, you can see the thumbnail shots of the players on the inside cover.

This guy claims to offer the first home run hit by Lastings Milledge in the Appalachian League. Impressive, thought I, as that was likely his first stop, making this actually Milledge's first home run as a professional. Except, according to The Baseball Cube, Milledge didn't hit any homers in the Appy League.

A real prize is this 1957 Giants media guide. (The listing incorrectly places the team in San Francisco already.) I was going to bid on it, but the only future Mets on the team were Willie Mays and Wes Westrum. Besides it looks like it has holes for binder rings on the lleft and for a comb binding on top.

I just bought a 2-disc DVD of which the first disc is a basic highlight film of the '86 WS and the second disc is billed as "most of the original game footage from Game Six." I ended up buying it directly from the guy's website instead of on eBay because he didn't accept PayPal. I can PM (or post, I don't want to be an advertiser for the guy though I will if enough people are interested) the website to anyone else who wants to buy it. I'm assuming most of you won't be interested because you probably all have video tape of every game from the entire 1986 season. I'm the loser who doesn't have Game Six on tape.

One is the 2004 Red Sox featuring not just all 4 WS games and WS Highlight film but all 7 ALCS games in their ENTIRETY! And the second is shinning the spotlight on the Yankee dynastay from 96-2001. All 4 WS winning highlight films (2001 was the first to be released on DVD format) and 5 complete WS games selected from those WS, Game 5 is the 2000 representitive (note, all of the games are in decent rotation on YES's Yankee Classics, but the audio/video on the DVD is FOX all the way, YES uses Sterling/Kay on their broadcasts) Sadly I had a real piece of junk VCR back in 1986, I'm pretty sure it was the first one we ever bought and it pretty much crapped out on me that October. I don't recall if I tried taping the 88 NLCS, but by 1999 my VCR was up to the task of recording all Met postseason games Course by next year I may have a DVD recorder that can record off TV, and of course now I can pre-record on TVio instead of being nervous that the tape will go out Ah the technology age... Haven't updated in a while. I don't have a game-used taste, thank God, but I do have Kingman taste. This claims to be a game-used Kong bat from 1976 and perhaps used in an All-Star game by the big enigma. I didn't know bats had dimpled ends yet. A signed 1962 photo. An "original" Mr. Met bobble-head bank. What's with the orange bill on the cap. Was Mr. Met mascotting for the Tides? He also seems to have two pairs of eyebrows. Finally, for the 6' 6" 228 lb. addiction-recovering athlete in your life, here's a suit tailor-made for Straw. Not bid on yet. Reserve is set at $100.
