@AdamRubinESPNMets exercise $11 million option on Jose Reyes. Will not prevent contract talks about longer-term deal.

Re: Mets and Reyes

Last year's injury kept Reyes from even reaching Type B status, so this is the wrong year to let him walk. I kind of like not being committed for more than a year at this point, though.

Money wise he's not woth it, I can't see him pulling down this kind of twine per year in any new contract.

Edgy says that Rubin isn't the reporter he used to be, when he would go out and work to uncover hard-to-find facts rather than engage in idle and provocative speculation.

So the Mets will have Reyes in a walk year? Could get funky around 7/31/2011.

Rubin also bet that Backman would be skipper back in July before cryptically retreating.

Although, if I were Jose Jose, I might wanna see what I'm worth too.

I ain't lookin' to see that. The only funk I'm focused on in late July is the funk the rest of the division is in looking at thier double-digit defecit in the standings.

If you were Jose, would you put all your chips on this season, knowing the seasons you've lost to long-term injuries?

If the Mets offer me a generous mid-term package, I take a good long look at it if I'm a Reyes.

Re: Mets and Reyes

Jose turns 28 next season and is currently coming off an OK season preceded by a missed/injured one.
He'd almost be a fool not to think that he stands a pretty good chance at being in a better contract position a year from now.

His pretty good season was interrupted also.

I don't think there's anything particularly foolish in being concerned that one injury could ruin his long-term security.

What would you offer him?

Re: Mets and Reyes

I honestly don't know at this point. Originally I thought he'd be underpaid by the time this option rolled around but that's not so clear right now.
What's good is that at his age you'd be less worried about the years of the contract than the dollars. Usually I'm the other way around on that.

And speaking of short-stops and contracts, the Yanx let it leak today that the Jeter negotiations "could get messy".
Don't know if that's just before-the-fact public relations or if it means that the sides have exchanged preliminary figures and they discovered that they're several football fields apart.

5 years, $45 million.

I don't think that's gonna get it done. That's still lining up behind Oliver Perez on payday.

If that's what he's being offered, yeah, I guess he does play out his walk year.

I would think that any contract that Jose gets would have some incentives, based on games played, built in. Reduces the risk somewhat if he's injury plagued, but rewards him for the upside if he isn't.

5 years, $70 million, option for the sixth year at big dollars.

Yeah, I think negotiations are going to hover around there (though I'm not sure how tolerant Reyes will be of the delayed pay boost), and I think it'll be a test of Alderson's philosphy whether he has the stomache for that kind of commitment.

i don't think he'll be overpaid at 11 mil if he's fairly healthy next year. and he's still got the potential to be significantly underpaid relative to his production.

granted, i'm not sure how much i buy into the WAR-equivalent salary thing, but it's still something to look at. (its not that i think it's total bullshit, its just that i think that its a much more complicated dynamic than the method they are using to approximate it.)

I love Jose and if I was his agent I would be telling him that other teams would likely value him more in FA than the Mets , does Boston have a SS?

Re: Mets and Reyes

Well, I wouldn't tell him that if the Mets are ponying up impressively.

Let's let the Mets get to the table before we start advising Jose. The option is locked in so Alderson can get on with assembling his staff and his field staff before wrestling aggressively with this later in the offseason.

Well, that's his/her job as an agent. (I'm glad George is dead, because he'd have a seven year, $150 million offer in Jose's hands at 12:01 am the day he becomes eligible.)

Jose (or David) leaving would be Darryl all over again. /shudder

How's about 5 years/ $50 million guaranteed with an extra million for every 100 PA's past the first 100 each season? If that's not enough, you could throw in cumulative PA bonuses (boni?), say, 1.5 or 2 million for each 1000 PA's. Something like that.

I think that asks him to assume most of the risk. Players of his stature are getting the high side of $15 mills.

Well, that contract would be at least $50 million with a shot to make it as much as $86 or so. If that's not enough, maybe you make the floor $55 million? 60?

I think anything past that would be close enough to his market value that it would negate the need for crazy incentives.

Out of how many?

Do really believe he can get an extension averaging 15 million now? I don't see it.

Re: Mets and Reyes

Here's Hanley: 09:$5.5M, 10:$7M, 11:$11M, 12:$15M, 13:$15.5M, 14:$16M

That's with one or two of those years being pre-FA-eligibility.

Rollins is a good measuring stick, but he signed back in 2006 and left them with an $8.5 million option this year, which was even more of a no-brainer than the Mets' option with Reyes. Suffice to say that their agents will be watching the other guy's negotiating.

But we know Jeter's going to get crazy dollars, and Reyes may not be Jeter, but he is a name on the marquee/face on the media guide/franchise identity player, and his agent is going to bring Jeter into the picture. Reyes is going to get paid.

i think it's totally meaningful that it took him until he was 23 to show that he was a star.

Mets have picked up Reye's option for 2011 but won't talk extension now. Reye's per his agent, will not talk extension during the season.

Wouldn't this suggest a Reye's trade before 2011 season ends?

I suspect it means Alderson has a billion things to do right now. But an extension could be worked out in a slow period, or in Spring Training.
