Mets and Reyes

@AdamRubinESPNMets exercise $11 million option on Jose Reyes. Will not prevent contract talks about longer-term deal.

smg58 Nov 03 2010 04:03 PM Re: Mets and Reyes |
Last year's injury kept Reyes from even reaching Type B status, so this is the wrong year to let him walk. I kind of like not being committed for more than a year at this point, though.
|
metirish Nov 03 2010 04:09 PM Re: Mets and Reyes |
Money wise he's not woth it, I can't see him pulling down this kind of twine per year in any new contract.
|
Ceetar Nov 03 2010 04:19 PM Re: Mets and Reyes |
Sandy's been busy, and will be busy. things like extensions can be worked out during a slower time.

Fman99 Nov 03 2010 04:58 PM Re: Mets and Reyes |
Good stuff.

metirish Nov 03 2010 06:29 PM Re: Mets and Reyes |
Rubin says if he were a betting man he would bet that Reyes will not sign an extension during the season and go to free agency.
|
Benjamin Grimm Nov 03 2010 07:22 PM Re: Mets and Reyes |
That would suck.

Edgy DC Nov 03 2010 07:56 PM Re: Mets and Reyes |

Edgy says that Rubin isn't the reporter he used to be, when he would go out and work to uncover hard-to-find facts rather than engage in idle and provocative speculation.
|
Ashie62 Nov 03 2010 08:49 PM Re: Mets and Reyes |
So the Mets will have Reyes in a walk year? Could get funky around 7/31/2011.
|
John Cougar Lunchbucket Nov 03 2010 08:53 PM Re: Mets and Reyes |
Rubin also bet that Backman would be skipper back in July before cryptically retreating.
|
Edgy DC Nov 03 2010 09:05 PM Re: Mets and Reyes |

I ain't lookin' to see that. The only funk I'm focused on in late July is the funk the rest of the division is in looking at thier double-digit defecit in the standings. If you were Jose, would you put all your chips on this season, knowing the seasons you've lost to long-term injuries? If the Mets offer me a generous mid-term package, I take a good long look at it if I'm a Reyes.

Frayed Knot Nov 03 2010 09:06 PM Re: Mets and Reyes |
Jose turns 28 next season and is currently coming off an OK season preceded by a missed/injured one.
|
Edgy DC Nov 03 2010 09:13 PM Re: Mets and Reyes |
His pretty good season was interrupted also.
|
Frayed Knot Nov 03 2010 09:22 PM Re: Mets and Reyes |
I honestly don't know at this point. Originally I thought he'd be underpaid by the time this option rolled around but that's not so clear right now.

5 years, $45 million.
|
Edgy DC Nov 04 2010 06:12 AM Re: Mets and Reyes |
I don't think that's gonna get it done. That's still lining up behind Oliver Perez on payday.
|
Benjamin Grimm Nov 04 2010 06:30 AM Re: Mets and Reyes |
I would think that any contract that Jose gets would have some incentives, based on games played, built in. Reduces the risk somewhat if he's injury plagued, but rewards him for the upside if he isn't.

5 years, $70 million, option for the sixth year at big dollars.
|
Edgy DC Nov 04 2010 07:31 AM Re: Mets and Reyes |
Yeah, I think negotiations are going to hover around there (though I'm not sure how tolerant Reyes will be of the delayed pay boost), and I think it'll be a test of Alderson's philosphy whether he has the stomache for that kind of commitment.

metirish Nov 04 2010 08:00 AM Re: Mets and Reyes |
I love Jose and if I was his agent I would be telling him that other teams would likely value him more in FA than the Mets , does Boston have a SS?
|
Edgy DC Nov 04 2010 08:03 AM Re: Mets and Reyes |
Well, I wouldn't tell him that if the Mets are ponying up impressively.
|
seawolf17 Nov 04 2010 08:11 AM Re: Mets and Reyes |
|
Well, that's his/her job as an agent. (I'm glad George is dead, because he'd have a seven year, $150 million offer in Jose's hands at 12:01 am the day he becomes eligible.) Jose (or David) leaving would be Darryl all over again. /shudder

Vince Coleman Firecracker Nov 04 2010 08:36 AM Re: Mets and Reyes |
How's about 5 years/ $50 million guaranteed with an extra million for every 100 PA's past the first 100 each season? If that's not enough, you could throw in cumulative PA bonuses (boni?), say, 1.5 or 2 million for each 1000 PA's. Something like that.
|
Edgy DC Nov 04 2010 08:45 AM Re: Mets and Reyes |
I think that asks him to assume most of the risk. Players of his stature are getting the high side of $15 mills.
|
Ashie62 Nov 04 2010 10:14 AM Re: Mets and Reyes |
|
He would have to put up a stellar full season to demand that coin.
|
Edgy DC Nov 04 2010 10:22 AM Re: Mets and Reyes |
He's put up three of them.
|
Vince Coleman Firecracker Nov 04 2010 10:29 AM Re: Mets and Reyes |
|
Well, that contract would be at least $50 million with a shot to make it as much as $86 or so. If that's not enough, maybe you make the floor $55 million? 60? I think anything past that would be close enough to his market value that it would negate the need for crazy incentives.
|
Ashie62 Nov 04 2010 10:31 AM Re: Mets and Reyes |

Out of how many? Do really believe he can get an extension averaging 15 million now? I don't see it.
|
Edgy DC Nov 04 2010 10:42 AM Re: Mets and Reyes |
Here's Hanley: 09:$5.5M, 10:$7M, 11:$11M, 12:$15M, 13:$15.5M, 14:$16M

i think it's totally meaningful that it took him until he was 23 to show that he was a star.

Ashie62 Nov 05 2010 11:33 AM Re: Mets and Reyes |
Mets have picked up Reye's option for 2011 but won't talk extension now. Reye's per his agent, will not talk extension during the season.

Ceetar Nov 05 2010 12:55 PM Re: Mets and Reyes |

I suspect it means Alderson has a billion things to do right now. But an extension could be worked out in a slow period, or in Spring Training.

Valadius Nov 05 2010 01:52 PM Re: Mets and Reyes |
Is anyone else stunned to think that we're entering Reyes' ninth season with the Mets?
|
John Cougar Lunchbucket Nov 05 2010 01:53 PM Re: Mets and Reyes |
I kinda like that we'll have Reyes singing for his supper this summer.
