Casey Stengel managed Spahn's brief ML time with the Boston Braves prior to the war and at one point called him "gutless" or some similar term when a game he pitched wasn't going well.
Stengel later told the joke on himself that if he was such a smart manager how come he referred to a future Bronze Star & Purple Heart winner as "gutless".
Spahn of course famously got in a line of his own after finishing his career with Stengel's Mets and wondering why he only got to play for him both before and after he was a genius.
