The 2010 Franco McRosco Award

Nov 09 2010 05:15 AM

Judging relief pitching is a cloudy business. Cloudy and emotional. Bruce Sutter for the Baseball Hall of Fame? Sure. Bruce Sutter before Rich Gossage? Wait, really?

Take John Franco for instance. Our ranking system says he's the top releiver in Mets history. His length of tenure and consistency of performance certainly speak well of him. But reasonable folks may disagree. He never anchored a championship bullpen, never closed out a championship, never led his team emotionally from oblivion to a pennant with a ralllying slogan.

And you know, that's fine. Franco gave the number off his back to Mike Piazza and turned around and took a number off of Tug McGraw's back. He don't mind sharing in a legacy. And it is in that spirit that we ask you to share in the voting for the 2010 Franco McRosco Award for Outstanding Mets Relief Pitcher.

Below we have listed the statistics for all Mets pitchers as relievers. Stoppers, closers, LOOGys, ROOGys, swingmen, eighth-innnig guys, longmen, shortmen, horses, mules, donkeys, gophers, firemen, gasmen, emergency men, HazMat men, touniquets, bandages, and syringes loaded with pure adrenaline --- all are present. Who's the best? Heck if we know. That's why we need you.

Please vote for five guys. Your top guy gets five points, your second guy gets four, etc. The top point receiver will be your recipient of the 2010 Cranepool Forum Franco McRosco Award for Outstanding Mets Relief Pitcher.

"McRosco"? You're losing it. I'm going all Joe Girardi and interrupting this commercial to bring in the closer. You're done, kid.

Takahashi
Rodriguez
Feliciano
Mejia
Parnell

Apologies to Elmer Dessens, who apparently has pitched in about 100 games in the last two years even though I've never seen him actually pitch.

Takahashi - great job doing everything asked of him
Rodriguez - I hope the closest he ever gets to Flushing again is Rikers Island. That being said, a 2.20 ERA is a 2.20 ERA.
Feliciano - 2010 is becoming a vague memory, but I'm thinking he didn't suck against righties, either.
Dessens - I kind of sort of remember him. And a 2.30 ERA is a 2.30 ERA.
Parnell - Zoom!

Honorable mention to Nieve. His numbers stunk overall, but that was because Jerry's flowchart didn't include "rest Nieve". He did a great job until he didn't do a great job.

Re: The 2010 Franco McRosco Award

Takahashi-- Nice ERA, nice strikeout numbers, suspiciously nice HR rate. I wonder if that holds for his next team.
Rodriguez-- Pitches/IP was just about what Takahashi posted... which was average-to-slightly-above-average for the 'pen. Which is kinda shocking, considering how many 30-pitch 9ths my brain seems to recall.
Parnell-- The WHIP was pretty much all due to some HRs and bleeders. That walk rate was surprising... and bodes well for the future.
Feliciano-- The best of the nice-on-paper dregs (that walk rate and WHIP are just plain grotesque); only here because of the reliability against lefties and the workload.
Acosta-- Is there such a thing as a three-true-outcomes pitcher? Great season, by his standards.

HONORABLE MENTION: Dessens-- If you ever actually watch the guy pitch... looking at his end-of-year numbers is as mind-blowing as the Wizard of Oz/Dark Side... thing.

A fair point. But to be even fairer, Nieve's numbers stunk because he kind of stinks.

I'm gonna be one of those vindictive asshole guys who leaves off a candidate he doesn't like personally.

Voted a fifth-place tie between Parnell and Acosta:

5 Takahashi
4 Rodriguez
3 Dessens
2 Feliciano
0.5 Parnell
0.5 Acosta

If that's not kosher, then please give Parnell the full point and drop Acosta.

I'll say this for K-Rod -- he wants to be here (gettin' paid) in 2011. Takahashi has abandoned us.

Re: The 2010 Franco McRosco Award

Takahashi and K-Rod's relief stats are similar. So then why the disparity in WAR?

K-Rod 57.1 IP/2.1 WAR
Tak 122 IP/1.3 WAR

Was Tak so bad as a starter that his starter WAR approached -1.0?

Tak the starter:

WHIP 1.45
ERA 5.01
ERC 5.03
IP 64.2
K 54
BB 21
H 73
