I know everyone's emailin', and fb'n, and RTR'n but it needs

Best of luck again, tmf!!

Ashie - this is actually going to be ideal running weather. Cool is MUCH better than hot!

Willets - check my sig line again. I'll be in the back of the pack, but just happy to finish :)

Re: IMT 11/07, themetfairy vs Streets of NY

Ethiopians Haile Gebrselassie and Derartu Tulu are favorites to win the 2010 NYC Marathon. Asking metfairy to compete with the likes of these world-class champions may be a little much. As such, Ryan and Stella have been strategically positioned along the route with a couple of cups of too-hot coffee. With these two out of the picture, I figure that opens up the door for metfairy to swoop in and take the title.

Other notable runners:

Chilean Miner Edison Pena was trapped in a mine for 69 days. He's going to want to crawl back in there after getting his ass kicked by metfairy. This will give rise to next year's Halloween Costume Favorite: The Chilean Miner who escapes, runs the marathon, then falls into deep depression after he gets his ass kicked by metfairy.

Celebrity chef and Food Network Star Bobby Flay will also get his ass kicked by metfairy today.

Akino-sahn, can you give us your assessment of this matchup?

(chewing) "Mmmmmm. It's very...good!"

Thank you Akino-sahn. Excellent analysis as usual.

Al Roker. Metfairy will definitely beat Al Roker.

Actor Kirk Acevedo, star of TV's Fringe, will be running for the cause "I'm an Actor but Nobody has any Clue Who I am". After today's performance he'll be known as "that guy from that show that got his ass kicked by metfairy".

i'm not sure, but it also looks like the chilean miner started with the professional women (?!), and was running a 9:13 pace at the 5 mile mark.

Re: IMT 11/07, themetfairy vs Streets of NY

I'm unable to log onto the participant tracking software. It says that due to the demand their server is overloaded. It keeps redirecting me to a results page for those that have already finished. I agree with Willets, it's pretty poor when the site only has to function for 1 day and they don't have sufficient bandwidth to keep the site up and running reliably.

Re: IMT 11/07, themetfairy vs Streets of NY

As said somewhere in the running thread, our neighbors who live on the route host an annual marathon party with lots of great brunch food, mimosas and bloody mary's out the ass. It was where I encountered Sharon today (or she me, actually, she totally took me by surprise but there she was).

The party is mainly an excuse for my friend/host to blast AC/DC and other classic rawk out his windows at obnoxious volumes (the runners as they approach invariably look up expecting to see a live band or something), but he outdid himself this year when one of the speakers rumbled off his 2nd floor windowsill, off the awning for the retail storefront below and onto the sidewalk where it smashed and nearly hit a passerby, prompting a visit from the NYPD and an order to keep the speakers indoors. Rocknroll! (/devil horns)

Lunchpail got into cheering this year, but had to split for a birthday party by the time Fairy flew in. True story: His best moment was provided by another runner in a Tug McGraw t-shirt. He ran by slapping hands with us on the sidewalk, but missed the 3-foot-6 Lunchpail whose hand was also awaiting the hi-5, then turned back just to give it. Nice! Guy with a mohawk and I believe, a baseball shaved into the side of his head.

Q: Didn’t you once run in the Paris Marathon?

Joe: Yep. I ran three of them.

Q: Correct me if I’m wrong but is it also true that you never trained for any of them?

Joe: You shouldn’t really ask me about my training regime, you know.

Q: Why?

Joe: Because it’s not good and I wouldn’t want people to copy it.

Q: Don’t make me beat it out of you.

Joe: Okay, you want it, here it is. Drink 10 pints of beer the night before the race. Ya got that? And don’t run a single step at least four weeks before the race.

Q: No running at all?

Joe: No, none at all. And don’t forget the 10 pints of beer the night before. But make sure you put a warning in this article, “Do not try this at home.” I mean, it works for me and Hunter Thompson but it might not work for others. I can only tell you what I do.

I've been thinking about taking a photography course myself. At least to actually know all the basics rather than just pushing random buttons on my camera when i'm playing with it. "Hmm, wonder what would happen if I flipped it to manual and changed this number to 1/2000"" So I'll look forward to following your 365/365 thing.

Thanks Ceetar :)

oh, you say that now... i remember saying the same thing almost nine years ago...

so what i'm sure we all want to know is... can you walk? can you make it up stairs? can you get back down them? and has anyone yet told you that its way easier to go down stairs backwards?

Trust me - I mean it! This was my Julie and Julia project. I'm glad I did it, but glad it's over :)

I'm ok with the stairs. Yeah, my legs are a little achy, but nothing that ibuprofen can't handle. I have one very sore toenail, but otherwise I'm in pretty good shape, all things considered :)

Re: IMT 11/07, themetfairy vs Streets of NY

As promised, here is the story of Marathon Weekend.

D-Dad and I went into the City on Saturday, stopping off to buy Philly pretzels on the way. I wanted them for carbing up before the Marathon, and to eat during the race.

Saturday evening was the Team McGraw pre-race pasta dinner. I had the chance to see some old Team McGraw friends and meet some new ones. It was touching hearing everyone's stories about why they were running the Marathon, and wonderful seeing so many great people.

The dinner ended early, so D-Dad and I went to TKTS and bought tickets to see In The Heights. It was a great show, although I probably should have been in bed a little earlier that night. But everyone says that you never sleep the night before the Marathon, and we did enjoy the show.

We woke up bright and early Marathon morning so I could meet Team McGraw at the hotel down the block. Funny story - we took the elevator down with three police officers. They noticed my race bib, and we made small talk about the race. In the lobby, though, we had a little issue getting out the door, because we had to walk around a fourth officer who had someone in handcuffs! In all of my years of living in New York, I had never seen someone being led away in handcuffs before....

But we made it to the hotel without any further incident, and I got on the bus to Staten Island with the team. It was great being a part of the team, because I was able to hang out with friendly faces during those cold early morning hours before the race. That made a world of difference!

I was supposed to be in the third wave for the race, but I got a little antsy and decided to see whether I could sneak into the second wave. The plan shouldn't have worked - they were checking numbers at the front of the corrals. But I was there right at the time that they were getting ready to close the corrals for Wave 2, and kind of got pushed into the corral by a surge of people behind me! So I was in!

The cannon went off, and I started to run. I felt good at the start, and saw D-Dad two places in Brooklyn. But by the time I was getting ready to leave Brooklyn, shortly after saying hi to JCL, the cold air was taking its toll on my glute, and I went to a medical station to get it massaged. That helped, but by the time I was done running through Queens and on the 59th Street Bridge, I knew I was going to have endurance issues.

I met D-Dad again, along with an old friend, up on 97th Street. Then it was up to the Bronx. I was kind of nervous about running through the Bronx in my Mets cap, but I actually heard one Let's Go Mets cheer there (the best kind of Bronx Cheer possible ). Then it was back to Manhattan, and I met up with D-Dad and several friends in front of the Museum of the City of New York. My boys were there as well, thanks to the kindness of a good friend in New Jersey, so that was a nice moment.

From there, though, things were hard. That last 5K has a lot of inclines, and I couldn't run uphill any longer. So I did what I could do, and eventually crossed the finish line in 6:12:20. I was hoping to finish in under 6 hours, but when you factor in the medical stop and the bathroom breaks, then even with the walking my net time was close to 6 hours. Besides, back in April I decided that my time limit would be 6:53 - the time of the Mets' 20-inning game against the Cardinals

After the race I met up with D-Dad, checked in with my Team McGraw folks, and went to my friend's apartment for celebratory pizza and champagne with friends and family. I was worried that people would be disappointed in me for the walking, but everyone has been really supportive and proud of me :)

Today I'm feeling pretty good, save for one toenail that I may lose (there were several signs along the race route, btw, that read, "Toenails Are Overrated!" ).

If you told me two years ago that I would run a marathon, let alone the New York City Marathon, I would have laughed in your face. Even with the walking, I am thrilled with the fact that I accomplished that. Raising $6,214 for the Tug McGraw Foundation at the same time is just icing on the cake. This was an amazing experience, and I am so thrilled that I was able to do it.

Ya Gotta Believe!

in my experience, no matter how poorly you do relative to your own expectations, the only person who is ever disappointed with your performance in the marathon, is you.

Re: IMT 11/07, themetfairy vs Streets of NY

good recap, btw. i was wondering how you started so early. very nice. glad you didn't have to climb over any temporary fences to get into your assigned wave!

how did you like those crowds through brooklyn, and along 1st avenue?

was 5th avenue as endless as i've made it out to be? i hope i didn't oversell it...

my assistant xc coach, btw, dropped out just after the 59th street bridge. he wasn't really trained for it, and started getting a burning sensation in his foot that felt like a big bad blister but wasn't.

did you see subway jared, or amani toomer, both of whom ran very respectable races?

The crowds in Brooklyn were great. I was a little preoccupied with finding D-Dad, especially since I did start early (I sent him an e-mail that said Wave 2, but I sent it to his wrong e-mail addy and he didn't get it), so I was a little anti-social when trying to find him. But they were great. At other places in Brooklyn I was actually a little intimidated by the crowds; conversely, I was expecting the roar of 1st Avenue to seem louder, but Brooklyn got me accustomed to the noise level.

1st Avenue wasn't too endless, because I was able to chunk it up a bit. I saw several of my Team McGraw teammates (women with whom I ran other races but who weren't running yesterday) somewhere in the 60's; after that I was counting down to seeing D-Dad at 97th, and I saw other Team McGraw folks north of that. On the way down I saw D-Dad, my boys (who were driven in from NJ by a friend of mine) and several other friends in front of the Museum of the City of New York. Then it was the countdown to the Engineer's Gate, the coundtown to Central Park South, and the countdown to the end.

Didn't see Jared, the miner, or Bobby Flay on the course - I'm sure they all started in front of me. I may have seen Al Roker; I have a vague memory of seeing someone who looked like him, but at that point I was concentrating on getting myself through it. I saw the very beginning of the Today show this morning, and Al was saying things started getting tough for him at Mile 15 and the 59th Street Bridge, which was the same point they got hard for me.

Sorry to hear about your XC coach - I hope he's ok!

I concur. I did the ALS walk with JCL and Kase in May. Walking 3 miles is a lot more work than running that distance.

I think you have to be licensed medical personnel to volunteer for that particular gig ;)
