walking!

inspired by metfairy and all the other marathon runners on tv that he was waving to yesterday, minimm took his first ever steps this morning. naturally, there were no recording devices nearby... (i was just telling mrs.mm yesterday that we need to charge up the video camera and have it always at the ready)

he was holding onto the shelf on his changing table, eying his dresser mere feet away, with all the many drawers he knows he's not allowed to open. mrs.mm had just been putting away some clothes, and i popped my head in just to say hi as i finished getting ready for work. so he's eying the dresser, and clearly he's trying to convince himself that if he lets go, and moves his feet, he can get there. it was almost like he was going through the steps (so to speak)) in his mind: "ok, there's the dresser. i'm pointed in the right direction. if i let go, i'm not gonna fall down. i can totally stand. and i can get around the house by moving my legs, while pushing something or holding on. but lately i haven't really needed to hold on to stay up. so maybe i don't really need to at all... ok. so i'll let go of the shelf. then lift this leg. put it down a little farther forward. repeat with the other one. one or two more times, and i'll be there. it'll be just like standing, but i'll be moving. and its close enough that if i don't make it, a good lean'll probably get me there anyways... .alright, lets do this!"

he made it look easy. he'll probably be running by the end of the week.

i was just happy that our congratulating him distracted him a little from his ultimate goal of opening the dresser drawers. i would've hated to yell at him after just walking for the first time ever.

If he can, I can. I KNOW I can!

Congratulations.

The running won't be the problem.
It will be the stopping.
Be sure to have your camera.

Re: walking!

I believe this means that if you haven't already begun savings for college, you'll never be able to afford it.

Re: walking!

I just checked back at the baby m thread to see when his bday was: That's somewhat ahead of schedule if he's walking at 11 mos, yes? Lunchpail was a few weeks past his first birthday.

In a hotel with a long walk down a narrow hallway to the elevator and wham. Almost the whole way in one shot!

Re: walking!

MK was late - about 14 months.

If he waited one more week, he would have been like the kid in the commercial whose first steps were towards Mickey Mouse in WDW.

Re: walking!

yeah, he's a little ahead of schedule. there's another kid (the tiger, from halloween) in his daycare class that's almost the same age, and has been walking for at least a month already. two other babies about the same age are getting there (the lion and the bunny), but aren't there yet.

it took a few days of coaxing, but he finally started walking again yesterday. basically, we've been egging him on with the promise of toys held aloft. he catches on after a few rounds and then gets cranky about our manipulative efforts. but once he gets even a smidge of confidence, there'll be no stopping him. he's such a fast crawler, though, that for the most part, he just doesn't see the appeal of suddenly moving slower.

Re: walking!

Congrats to you and mrs marathon. I'm sure it won't be long before you post news of his first sub-7 minute mile
