"The Onion" is so funny...

They made a vid of some old, goateed dude all hanging out in his middle-class suburban home, making YouTube vids on some old-ass Compaq Presario laptop (probably running Windows Millenium). He acts like he's all smart about baseball matters, and says what he would do to fix the Mets and it's so hilarious. You can't take him seriously at all because of the ridiculous, low-budget, high school A/V club setup, and the suggestions are even funnier because it's all the things the Mets have done for years, stuff that hasn't worked at all. That's what makes it so clever, see.

We need "stars"! We need "energy, personality, and leadership"! We need to release everyone who's bad to show the fans we mean bidness! We need to trade Ike Davis + whoever it takes for Prince Fielder! We need to sneakily/stealthily sign that Cliff Lee guy! I think he struggled on the Indians and got sent to the minors, so we can probably buy low and shock people by getting him.

Good writing, and the guy they got to play the stooge nailed it.

Good description Seo (although an old guy on a Compaq would probably have a better clue than this guy....).

Re: "The Onion" is so funny...

Seriously, what is this "we" shit? Every sentence starts with "we." "We" fired you a thousand years ago, dude. Go to hell.

I checked another team preview -- the Marlins -- and he "we's" every team. Makes you sound like an idiot, Steve.

What doesn't make him sound like an idiot?

In his next video Steveo tells us how "we" can snag the not hot looking intern.

When he sings "Nessun Dorma." The voice of an angel, I tell you.

Re: "The Onion" is so funny...

My heart goes out to him --- churning out low-budget bullshit for a content mill. Lost his high-profile/salary job, his family, his reputation, and his dignity --- all before a vast public whose currency is snark. He's a joke to people who hadn't even heard of him before the Post put in the front page. He probably hates himself, but he has to find a way to go on and make some semblence of meaning. But he has no idea how, so he does his best with what's familiar, and hits the red button on the VHS camcorder and grinds his way through.

It's a terrible thing when your connections fall away, and you're left with middling intelligence, a good haircut, and ethics that are shakier than a seizing paint mixer. That poor, incurious, incorrigible subordinate-fucker.

My favorite Steve Phillips/Meatloaf duet is "Paradise by the Dashboard Light."

Wait, what?

Re: "The Onion" is so funny...

Steve Phillips was an idiot eleven years ago today, after the Mariners signed John Olerud away from the Mets.

Steve Phillips used words like exciting and interesting and fun; only he wasn't describing his winter vacation. The Mets' general manager was reacting to the defection of John Olerud to the Seattle Mariners yesterday, and the task he faces in replacing the team's productive first baseman. A more appropriate choice of words would have been: oh no, egads and say it ain't so.
