Kanye West?

what is up with Kanye?

-was a complete dick to cutsie lil Taylor Swift at those irrelevant music awards

-went kinda nutso on that Red Cross telethon during the (in-?)famous G-Dub Bush hates black peeps rant

-looked confused & flustered &, at times, like a dick on Lauer, talking about the same GWB thing

-was cell phone dick-picking his peen all over the internet quite recently, and got pissed when the media 'castrated him' and cropped his junk from the photos

And now he's released his latest album "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy", which music 'tastemaker' website Pitchfork has creamed all up in their hipster skinny jeans over, giving it a perfect 10 out of 10, the first album to receive a perfect 10 by their outfit since 2002. I haven't heard it yet, but it's in my queue at rdio just because.

So Kanye: Idiot? Idiot savant? Straight-up genius? Totally misunderstood? Love him? Hate him? Give 2 shits about him either way??? Should he keep his yap shut at all times unless there's perfect 10.0 music playing behind him? Do you have any of his music? I don't. Also, was Matt Lauer as douchey as Kanye in that interview?

Kanye, pissed at media outlets 'cropping out' the peen from his recent cellie cock shot:
“I went to the Internet. They had the link, I went to it. Man, you cannot imagine how disappointed I was that I got cut off. … The media is scared, they’re scared of me. They’re scared of a black man with this taste level…So what they do in order to take that power away? They try to turn me into a demon. And it’s happened so many times throughout history. They knocked the nose off the Sphinx. They tried to tell you aliens built the pyramids… People need to understand, I’m not above the people. I’m of the people. I love the people.”

Poor Sphinxy's chopped-off lil nose & a sad little Egyptian man:

Re: Kanye West?

The real mystery is the universe of enablers. You should have seen my wife's face watchign footage of him being invited on stage to rap along with the Police. It sounded like an unprepared fifth grader trying to rad-lib his assignment.

Roxanne, Roxanne, I wanna clean you're bed pan
'Cuz I eat bran in Iran, wit' the Ku Klux Klan

I'm making that up, but the truth is it wasn't quite that good.

The reality is that he's far more a brand than a musician --- true of many hip-hp artists, but still. And a lot of peeps have a lot of intere$t in sustaining that brand and getting a piece of it.

I know the Swift kick he gave young Taylor is supposed to either (1) make me horrified that he can be so horrible to our perfect-haired China-doll princess, or (2) snort that he's getting a raw deal because America is just threatened by a strong black man keeping it real.

My only response was "How long before they do a duet together?" It was probably the best thing to happen to either of their careers.

I have to believe that he's exactly like the portrayal of him in South Park. He's a gay fish, yo.

Re: Kanye West?

I'm going with "don't give two shits"

I honestly can't name a single song of his anyway though, and I'm not sure if I "own" any of his music either. But then, I'm not really the target audience. (The target audience being "people that listen to music" presumably)

EDIT: on the I don't listen to music front, I just opened iTunes to find out the version is so old it doesn't recognize my iPod. heh.

Yeah, but wondering if his music actually has more equity than his brand nowadays. Or maybe saying stupid shit is the absolute best thing he or any front-page celeb can do to stay visible, in which case, he's the mega-uber celeb. What is his brand anyways? Does he have clothing/production company/jeans/sneaks/cologne? Or is his brand just a dickish personality? Dunno.

Been meaning to watch that one. Fish sticks (fish dicks?!)???

Edit: line from track 2 "Gorgeous"

"Choke a South Park writer with a fishstick
I insist it, to get up off of this dick"

Re: Kanye West?

I read a newspaper piece on the new album the other day which talked about him in 'best act since the Beatles' terms ... and suggesting surpassing them wasn't too far fetched ... and I'm like "Really?!?"

Yabbut, that brand came from a WEIRD fucking place.

The first album was this odd mishmosh of standard-- if strange-- brag rapping, sped-up and chopped-up (and exquisitely-chosen) Rufus samples, and a strain of keening insecurity that was unlike ANYTHING ever on a commercial rap record. The singles included: a midtempo, bracingly-honest ode to his face-shattering car accident... with the vocal track performed through a wired-shut jaw as he recovered from said accident ("Through the Wire"); a deconstruction of the rap-star/ghetto-fab ethos-- sample lyric: "She oh so precious with the peer pressure/couldn't afford a car, so she named her daughter A-Lexus"-- in which he admits that he's stuck in the mire like everyone else ("All Falls Down"); a slow jam about his favorite slow jams... with a killer bridge from fastest-rapper-alive Twista... co-starring Jamie Foxx ("Slow Jamz"); and a martial anthem about faith that's equal parts testifying and self-aggrandizing sacrilege ("Jesus Walks"). The stuff that didn't make it to air-- "Workout Plan," "I'll Fly Away," "Spaceship"-- is almost as interesting... and maybe weirder.

And that was just the debut. And it was preceded with five years of writing/producing hits for Jay-Z and various R & B acts... sans brand. And it was succeeded with ridiculously-good reinventions of Ray Charles ("Gold Digger") and Shirley Bassey ("Diamonds from Sierra Leone"), two more full-length rap records, a mostly-damn-good synth album ("808s and Heartbreak") and a couple dozen other singles/guest appearances.

There's chops here... and genuine oddness. He's a freak show, and likely mentally ill... but there's prodigious talent here as well.

And you can dance to it.

I like the 'douchebag' song.

Whatever's gone down since, "Jesus Walks" is still one of my favorite songs of the 2000s.

I've never knowingly heard a Kanye West song.

After hearing of his off the stage antics, I don't ever really want to.

Same here. Thinking about picking up the album on iTunes (I have the first two albums, and parts of the last two).

If you listened to any FM radio or were in a public space with background music or TV screens between Fall 2005 and Summer 2006, you've heard "Gold Digger." It's the one that samples Ray Charles' "I Got a Woman," and it's one of the best-produced pop songs I've ever heard.

And do you REALLY screen the music you listen to based on whether the artist seems like a nice, well-adjusted guy?

No...but I don't generally prefer to listen to modern hip-hop. I'd be more likely to pay attention to the music of a lauded artist who is outside my preferred genres if he didn't seem like a douche to begin with.

I still don't recognize his song from your description, but prolly would if I heard it. And on edit, you've added a link...I'll listen when not at work.

Re: Kanye West?

Fair enough.

I'll grant that he's a dick... and a tremendous one at that. I'm somewhat of a fan, and there have been yearlong stretches where I've more or less avoided the guy's public output, just to cut down on headaches.

But he's not your garden-variety pop- or rap-star-prick. At least half the time, he seems a little surprised and/or half-horrified by the titanically awful stuff spilling out of his mouth. It's strange, and makes him a good deal more interesting than your typical pop-cultural egomaniac.

If nothing else, I'd say "Jesus Walks" and "Gold Digger" are things you want to have heard, just as cultural references... and 'cause they're damn good.

Re: Kanye West?

I gave that Youtube a listen just now. Never heard the song before today and quite frankly, thought the music so grating that I stopped the clip after about 45 seconds.

Do you like hip-hop generally? Anything recent?

Oy. What are these kids listening to today? Do you have a song that drove your parents crazy? For me, it was the opening of Pink Floyd's Time, with all the clock bells and alarms chiming all at once.

Re: Kanye West?

Kanye is hit or miss for me, musically. Some stuff I really enjoy; I hated "Gold Digger" at first, but it grew on me. I have that one, "Jesus Walks," "Get Em High," and "School Spirit" on my iPod. I'll get the new one once the library gets it and check it out.

Yeah, I guess after listening to the clip, I've heard Gold Digger before. Is there something about Kanye's musical style that makes him unique?

I'll admit, I stopped paying attention to new rap music in about 1992.

This is me, too. Biggie and Tupac died, and they changed the beats, ditched the G-Funk stuff, and everything since has been cookie cutter shit. Aside from a few choice Beastie Boys cuts there hasn't been one hip hop single since 1995 that I thought was worth listening to.
