Holiday Gift Questions/Suggestions thread

Figured we could use a thread where we ask for input on holiday gifts.

So I will start: Mrs. Solo has asked for Wii Fit for Christmas. Poor taste to give your better half an "exercise" gift, even though she asked for it? Not sure.
But anyhow, who has it? is it worth it? and are there any additional props I'll need to buy? I have the Wii and remotes.
I would probably use it too...I assume you can do it in pairs?

Re: Holiday Gift Questions/Suggestions thread

it's one person at a time, at least it was. you can take turns in the games, with a slight break for recalibration.

wii fit comes with the balance board, which is all you need. but i don't know if there's support for multiple boards yet.

we got it about two years ago, and enjoyed playing with it for a while. then we got distracted by a race or two, and the attendant recovery, and then felt bad about stepping back on the thing only to be yelled at for how fat we'd gotten since the race. mmm, post-marathon gluttony. but i digress. about 6 months later, we decided, ok, lets pull this thing out again and use it.

and the balance board wouldn't work. we might've not had it in a good position for storage that may have messed up a sensor. i dunno. but it was like right after we'd had it for a year. and so there was no longer any kind of warranty protection on it. i meant to get it fixed, but never quite got around to it.

there was a then-grape-sized baby on the way at that point, and our wii usage has plummetted. we managed to get reasonably far in super mario brothers, much less far in lego harry potter, and are now most likely going to buy, but probably never play, epic mickey.

the balance games are fun, and the exercise things on there, while sometimes rather flawed, are still pretty good for motivating and the like. mrs.mm liked the yoga workouts a lot. i don't know too much about what games they may have come out with since it's introduction that would give it good staying power, but it's not wasting money if you get it.

Massage sessions.

If anyone needs a recommendation for a good guy in NY, let me know. I have a guy who everyone swears is the best there is.

you cannot do it in pairs.

like anythingelse, it requires actually doing it. It's not quite a real workout, and eventually you get tired of the workout games that are pretty fun to begin with. It's a nice way to learn some b asic exercise and yoga moves, which you can duplicate without the Wii. Which means you _can_ do it with someone else, you just won't have your balance measured by the wii board. All you need is the balance board, which generally comes with it.

i haven't actually turned it on in a while ,and the last time was to weight the cats, but sometimes if you've got a busy or lazy day, you can convince yourself to do a 'quick' wii fit workout which while not as good as actually going to the gym or something, is still good.

If she asked for it, it's not in bad taste. And it's not like you're giving her a vacuum - this is something she'll enjoy.

I have the Wii Fit, and I used it for a while. It was my gateway exercise to Exercise TV, which I actually like a lot more. What's nice about Wii Fit is the game aspect - it's cute and fun. What I didn't like was that you don't get continuous workouts, but everything is broken up a bit too much for my taste. EU Sports has better exercise routines for the Wii Fit that you can purchase once you've advanced (I used it for a while, but then dumped it when I started Marathon training. Maybe I'll go back to that this winter).

Yes - entire families can use the Wii Fit. Everyone can have his own account on it.

Thanks for the replies.

So I've got three quick responses people who have it and all have used it. I'm OK with outgrowing it or growing tired of it...that happens to all gifts. Time to start online shopping.

Eh.

I bought it for Fwife but we both tired of it quickly. We have the Biggest Loser Wii game too and I'm eh on both. I'd say, you're better off watching a 30 minute workout show, or better yet, getting a treadmill or elliptical. You'll burn 5x the calories that way.

We still spend most of our Wii time playing Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort. I am hoping to get Wii Party as a gift this year, it looks fun.

I'm pretty excited about Epic Mickey. We still need Mario Galaxy 2 and Super Smash Brothers, though.

Any of you play Mario Kart Wii?

Like all Mario Kart, it's highly enjoyable.

Agreed. Any of you play online? I'm always up for a race or twelve after the kiddoes are in bed, as long as my wife lets me have the TV.

When I can... which is very, very rarely. (The Wii's over at my maw's in NJ, on account of all the kiddie-visitors from my extended family who trammel the floorboards out there.)

Oh, yes. So much more enjoyable than Super Mario Bros., IMO.

For me its Mario Kart, Backyard football and baseball (go Arthur Chen!), and Lego Batman.

Yeah, but if she's going to not use something, I'd rather not have it cost as much, or take up as much space, as a treadmill or an elliptical.

Plus, when she told me she wanted Wii Fit, and I gently suggested maybe we could go with a treadmill or something else, I got the look. So that ended that.

My daughter routinely kicks my ass in this game, I don't know if I can handle any more beat-downs.

Technolgy challenged Ashie has a question about the kindle if anyone would be kind to help.

To download books you need to be in a highway hotspot right? When you have a book downloaded then you don't need to be "online to read it I believe.

I just don't know..Thanks anyone..

This is true of the cheaper WiFi only model. The normal Kindle, which is WiFi + 3G, allows you to purchase and download books anywhere you get a cellular-esque signal.

But yes, you do not need to be online to read the book. In fact, turning off the network capabilities when not in use (i.e., when not shopping/downloading) will prolong how much life you get from a single battery charge.
