"The hardest arithmetic to master is that which enables us to count our blessings." - Eric Hoffer

And this is the day we should do it.
Happy Thanksgiving Day, everyone.

Re: Thanksgiving Day

If I were king, all holidays would be Thanksgiving. I think I've mentioned before that it is, by far, my favorite holiday.

I like that it's a four day weekend with no obligation to buy gifts or flowers. Time with the family, all the food you can eat. What more could you ask?

Most holidays take the safe route and land on a Monday. They shoot for the three day weekend. These holidays are pussies. Yes, I'm talking to you Labor Day.

Thanksgiving, instead, lands on a Thursday each year. It dares the company presidents, the heads of HR, the ones in charge to open on Friday. It says fuck you to the Man. I'm taking a four day weekend whether you like it or not.

I like that we've invented an excuse (tryptophan) to gorge ourselves and take a nap immediately afterwards. I like that no one can say a word to you if you decide to plant yourself on the couch and watch football because that's what you're supposed to do on Thanksgiving. I like the fact that no one ever gets made because you didn't get them a Thanksgiving card.

Over the next few weeks, I'll fight crowds trying to snatch up characters from Toy Story 3. Thousands of tourists will crowd themselves into Times Square and freeze their asses off listening to Justin Bieber.

But tomorrow, I will be enjoying my holiday. Especially the parts where I'll be napping.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, for all of the reasons CF mentioned.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Re: Thanksgiving Day

It's my favorite too.

Here's what I said about it last year:

Happy Thanksgiving! This is, easily, my favorite holiday. I love the subtlety of it. It's uniquely American (although I know Canada has a Thanksgiving, and perhaps other nations do too) but not overtly patriotic. It can be spiritual, for those so inclined, but it's not overtly religious. (I always loved, as a kid, that it was a major holiday that wasn't marred by the obligation of going to church.) It hasn't been switched, like many other holidays, to the nearest Monday. Keeping it on Thursday gets most of us a four-day weekend. It's filled with tradition: food, family, parades, football, etc. I don't watch the football, and I haven't watched the parade since the Mets had a championship float in November 1986, but I do have my own tradition, which I now enjoy sharing with my kids. It's one I've mentioned here every year: I pull out the DVD of the classic 1933 version of KING KONG and recreate the WOR Channel 9 tradition.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! And I'd also like to wish all the Pilgrims out there a Happy Birthday.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you, my Metly friends.

We do two Thanksgivings every year. Today is with my inlaws. Then my folks and my brother come up tomorrow and my dad cooks another spread, and we have ANOTHER Thanksgiving dinner on Saturday (some select inlaws will be invited to that one also). Two turkeys > 1 turkey.

It's a great time. Family, food, football, fuck yeah!

Not for nothing, but this is wasted on us. I insist you submit to paying publications.

Re: Thanksgiving Day

i shoulda taken a picture of our bird. not that it was necessarily photogenic, just that it came out so well.

to avoid the flakish nature of our cruddy oven, we borrowed an electric turkey roasting pan thingy from a friend. a quick read of the instructions led me to believe that the cooking time would be on the order of 3-4 hours. we were aiming for dinner at around 4, but i was slow getting the thing going, so it didn't get started until about 12:30, i'd say.

i'd brined the bird overnight in a williams sonoma apple cider brine, and prepped it for the cooking by stuffing its cavities with a half a granny smith apple, some onion, celery, carrot, and various fresh herbs. into the bottom of the roasting pan, i'd tossed the other half of the apple, more herbs, and, fearing that leaving it dry would lead to a dry bird, i also tossed in some chicken stock and some apple cider to keep moisture in constant contact. as a result, i think i might've inadvertently steamed the bird to a large extent. it was done in about 2 hours, but didn't look over-cooked. it was done so quickly, that we'd not yet started on any of the other dishes. in fact, only one of our expected three pairs of guests had yet arrived.

so we left it covered, with a low temperature setting of no more than 200º and finished our work. ran into a bit of a logjam on the stove top. didn't serve dinner until about 5. the bird had been sitting for longer than it'd been cooked.

i was worried the poor thing would have dried out completely, and just been terribly overcooked, but, apparently, by leaving the cover on the electric roaster, it'd stayed tremendously moist and warm. tender and flavorful.

oh, and the gravy. the gravy. so good. so very good. mmm, i could just eat spoonful after spoonful of that gravy. the drippings in the bottom of the pan were collected, leaving behind all the solids, including the mushy remains of the apple wedges, and all the various herbs, and warmed up with some flour and water, and maybe some milk - i dunno, mrs.mm handled the gravy while i worked my magic on the brussels-sprouts-of-bacony-goodness. mmm... i'm tempted to sneak over to the fridge and steal another delightful spoonful. the apple and the cider really make this a treat.

so, yeah, we were worried about the oven, and the alternative measures we'd used seem to have yielded results as good or better. also, in heating up the stuffing and the sweet potatoes, the oven didn't bitch at all. no problems whatsoever. so... who knows if it would've held out for the bird. but it didn't matter. it was a successful dinner, and also earned the minimm seal of approval.

can't wait for my inevitable "thanksgiving reubens", with turkey, fried cabbage, and gravy.
