FIFA World Cup Bids For 2018 & 2022

The results are coming shortly on the voting by Fifa's executive committee for the World Cups of 2018 and 2022.

The bids for 2018 are down to Russia, England , Spain/Portugal and Belgium/Holland .

Here's how it works, Fifa's executive committee consists of 22 members, down from 24 as two were kicked out, the winning bid needs a majority of the vote....50% + 1....in the event of a tie the FIFA President will have the casting vote .It's anyones bid but it looks like England and Spain/Portugal are favorites

Corruption allegations are rife with tens of millions thrown out there in bought votes, The BBC's Panorama had an explosive expose the other night that some feel will hurt England's bid.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-11841783

Of bigger consequence could be last nights violence that occurred after Birmingham beat Aston Villa in the big Birmingham Derby, City fans took to the filed to bait the Villa fans and tore up the stadium while they were at it.

One has to wonder at the level of corruption that actually got two members kicked out given that a pretty high level of corruption in these international organizations is not only tolerated but accepted and expected.

The USA are seen as favorites for the 2022 WC....

I saw a list which had them third betting fave behind both Australia (2nd) and, of all places, Qatar. Mmmmmm, 126 degree weather

Spain/Portugal's bid apparently tried the suck-up method after corruption was alleged by the British press -- "FIFA is a clean institution. FIFA works honestly," bid president Angel Maria Villar said. "You are all honest, hardworking people."

Yeah, OK.

That would be humiliating

Their bid includes 12 stadiums...nine of which do not exist and will need to be built just for this event from the ground up. I assume that is not the case of the other bidders?

Now all the sports world has to do is agree on a standard way of saying: Qatar.
Apparently different dialects of Arabic allow for a fairly wide variety of correct pronunciations and over the years I've heard everything from 'ka-TAR' to something pretty close to 'gutter'

Re: FIFA World Cup Bids For 2018 & 2022

One thing that strikes me is that Russia has had the talent to win the Cup for a while now, but not having a strong league, their players are scattered all over the world and don't get a lot of time to play together and learn each other's game. This may focus some of the national team's energies and help turn them into the world power they probably should be.

That's going to be a lot of $$$ if they're all going to be inside and air conditioned, as promised.

Re: FIFA World Cup Bids For 2018 & 2022

The Russian Premier League is in the process of transitioning from playing in the summer (like the MLS) to playing from August to May (like in most of Europe). I imagine that FIFA's decision was influenced by having the stadiums emptied of club matches in June & July. Still I feel that it's going to be butt-numbingly cold to be a fan in St. Petersburg and Moscow from now on.

If only they had a gigantic tap on some sort of precious commodity with cartel-boosted prices.

Also... do they plan to air-condition the outdoors? Or will all games be held between 8 pm and 4 am local time?

Not only are they putting 2022 in an unsuitable location with no native league to speak of (much less a world-class one), they've basically decided to essentially cut the event's likely profits at least in half. Calling this process monkeyshines-in-business-suits would be an insult to monkeys-- at least their shit-throwing can be somewhat amusing.
