Benchies of 2011

I didn't see bench thread, but Tracksuit is tweeting that the Mets are sniffing around Reed Johnson, who apart from having a superhero secret identity name, is no Fred Lewis.

Gimme Lou Collier, damn it.

Johnson is really coming off a bad season. He did have some back problems, but he's at an age where you can't be too optimistic about him bouncing back. For a minor-league deal he's still worth a look, but I wouldn't go above that.

The bench looks like this, so far:

Paulino's not eliegible for opening day because he has to complete his suspension, so I guess that's good news for Mike Nickeas.

Always used to get him and Brady Clark confused. What DID happen to Fred Lewis? First, we're flirting, then we're really flirting, then... nothing.

Or bad news. I suppose the assumption is that he'll be called up at some point this season, but by forcing an extra catcher for the first eight games, you're potentially wasting an option year on someone.

What bugs you? Leaving aside the lack of names, this has the makings of being a really intriguing, skilled bench. Paulino KILLS lefties, and Duda did the same to righties in the minors and showed flashes of plus-power in the waning days of last year. Emaus/Murph/Hernandez make for an interesting, deep MI miasma. Toss, say, a Fred Lewis in there-- someone who can handle backup work, is a decent enough glove to come in as a defensive "closer," and gets on base some with the bat-- and we've got a stew going. Turner plays-- or "plays"-- short, too, no?

My understanding (which is always wrong when it comes to these things) is that if 2010 is an option year, 2011 will be an option year whether you're called up or not.

Boy did I misread the thread title. I thought that it was referring to benchers, which is a small Hebrew prayer book:

I certainly hope Ike Davis is a starter.

Clearly I missed something over the last few days. I am sure I'm missing a joke, but "Mick Emaus" cannot possibly be a real name. Can it?
|
Edgy DC Dec 13 2010 02:36 PM Re: Benchies of 2011 |
No, but Brad Emaus, 25yo Rule V claimee is.

I like Lewis, but he'll be at the expense of, not in addition to, Duda (or Pridie) as the LH OFer off the bench, or at the cost of a 12th pitcher, which i'd prefer.

I hate the idea of 12 pitchers.

So do I. But unless 2-3 of the 11 are swingmen (or potential swingmen), it may be prudent, considering what the rotation will look like, before and after Santana returns.
