CPF Annual Winter Meetings

Dec 27 2010 06:36 PM

I figured this year we could switch it up and gather at Darryl Strawberry's joint, you never know, the Man might be there.

We usually do this thing shortly after Spring Training begins, but if anyone wants to shout out dates that work (or don't) we may as well start now, so we can be sure to get a good crowd.

I was going to suggest March 20 in Manhattan, because I'm running the NYC Half Marathon again so I'll already be in town....

It should definitely be at Straw's. Good call. Accessible by train, too! I'm assuming it's too early to know the TV schedule for ST games?

All home games are on SNY. all the schedules are final now I think. the only think to think about would be a (whichever college basketball uses SNY) game which might preempt Mets baseball. which is just stupid, but it happens.

Re: CPF Annual Winter Meetings

I'm good for the 29th at Virgils.

The 20th at Straws in March is probably a good spring training
tv game day, and I got nothing going on, but it's not in St. Lucie.
The 6th and 13th are home games. Let's try and pick dates for
both meetings relatively quickly so we can calendar them!

Can one get to Straw's but subway and then LIRR from Manhattan
without going to Penn Station? I have never been on an LIRR train
in my life.

Why yes, you can take the trusty 7 train to woodside and transfer! Actually, you could probably transfer at Citi Field were it a game day and the trains stopped. Or Flushing Main.

(Or at the new east side LIRR access at GCP, just transfer there from the second avenue subway right? :-)(\)

Not sure what I can and cannot do personally, I do know the 20th is bad, due to flying back from Port St. Lucie that day.

Families are always welcome, there are often kids at these things.
With advance notice, door prize giveaways might even be rigged
on occasion if they display Mets' fandomness! **

The 29th seems to be good for Virgil's. Please discuss a date for
the March thing and let's put a wrapper on it by 1/7!

(I'm getting bossy in my old age hee hee)

The presentation of the CPF Rheingold Achievement Award will
be given out at the March meeting. The title might be changed
this year, but that's for me to know and you to find out nahnah
nahnah nah nah.

** Not all door prizes are desirable. Juan Samuel will sneak into
action on occasion and Vince Coleman. And one year Jeets got
a sheet of nine Walt Terrell Tigers' cards!

Out for 1/29, in for March. I'll nominate 3/13, as it's nice and close to my birthday, for Darryl's. Less likely to conflict with squatters looking for college basketball action. I'll volunteer to coordinate the reservation as well, unless JCL is already on it.

Thanks, sea ... coordinators are always welcome.
I'll figure a roll call when 1/7 approaches for the 1/29 date.

I'm good for 3/13 ... as good as anyone can be 2 1/2 months

Re: CPF Annual Winter Meetings

What happened in Tuscon the other day makes me wonder if it's inevitable that some crazed fan won't some day try to assassinate an unpopular local athlete. The sports rhetoric on the Internet and on the radio (and in the ballpark) can be every bit as bad, if not worse, as what we get from Washington.

SteveJRogers

Re: CPF Annual Winter Meetings

Geez, way to turn that around Ben!

I agree it is troubling, but the shooter was in league with the likes that would shoot an entertainer because of a mental unbalance and a need to be "famous" himself. I'd think those types don't need the constant yapping on internet communities and sports radio call in chatter to fuel their desire to do whatever it is they think they "have to do." I mean He Who Shall Not Be Named didn't need some snarky Twitter feed or some internet fourm to feed into his need to kill John Lennon.

Re: CPF Annual Winter Meetings

No, but in trying to look at the broad effect should mean looking beyond a single case.

It certainly seems to me that when the mainstream moves toward the fringes in any cultural experession --- or when the media over-covers the fringes to make them seem more mainstream --- what previously were the fringier elements move even further beyond the pale.

When everybody is getting a tattoo, the guy who previously would have been proud of his bicep tat gets a full sleeve, and the guy who previously would have gotten a full sleeve is hard at work at inking up his whole torso. Shit like that.

Benjamin Grimm
Jan 11 2011 07:50 AM
Re: CPF Annual Winter Meetings

Also, when everyone sounds as crazy as you are (even if they really aren't) it can validate your feelings and make your insane actions seem more reasonable. And that can be the tipping point between thoughts and action.

How about we do our part by not calling for the assassination of any Mets*, even in jest?
