I'm going to overly-exciting Port St. Lucie Florida in March.

We've talked about going to Munich/Germany for Oktoberfest as a one year anniversary, but that's only in the dream stages.

Re: Vacations 2K11

I was not too keen on Turkey until hearing great things from everyone who has ever been there. Everyone. It would be two weeks in Istanbul, and one each in Ismara and another port.

I've done the South Seas, so Turkey would be new, but a senior colleague has right of first refusal and, health permitting, will snatch that one up, so it looks like French Polynesia again.

The bad: 60 days away from my family, and pitchers of beer that run $37.50 (not a typo)
The good: I get a heavy stipend and it's 60 days in the South Pacific.

Re: Vacations 2K11

Similarly to DocTee, everyone I know who has been to Turkey has loved it. Plus supposed to have pretty good beaches as well. And caves. And art. And an interesting culture. And has the whole crossroads of the world thing. Oh, and good food. Not that I'd turn down the South Seas but when I had three weeks off last year I wavered between Turkey and Peru. I ended up in Peru and thought it was swell but Turkey is up there on the list. Though not in '11 when the faraway trip will be Paris.

I've been to Turkey twice. Constantinople (sorry, I refuse to refer to it by its annexed name) is a beautiful city and well worth the visit. An amazing juxtaposition between a modern and ancient city. The food was always great and the architecture was breathtaking. The visit to Hagia Sophia was undoubtedly the highlight. Also Constantinople's beaches are quite stunning. But two weeks there is excessive imo. I stay 6 nights there and managed to get most things done.

Attitudes outside the bigger cities can get a bit backward, and and the influence of Islam is more apparent in some smaller towns and villages, especially towards the east, so I wouldn't recommend venturing in that direction.

I visited the Gallipoli peninsula with a bunch of mates in 1998. One of them managed to get arrested for mouthing off at a Turkish ranger or something who demanded my friend be body searched -- we had picked up some metal fragments off the Cove (there was no law against doing so. Anyway, we had to call the Embassy to sort the whole thing out. (Just to add a bit of context, my friend's grandfather was killed there in WWI and it was two days before ANZAC Day, so you can appreciate why he was so incensed).

Bermuda's awesome, but know up front that it's liable to be a bit cool in April. You probably won't be able to swim in the ocean without significant 'shrinkage'.

See the caves-they're great and very spooky.
Hamilton's more honky-tonk, St George is quieter; depends on what you're up for.
Take the buses, they're the best way around the island. Besides, tourists can't rent cars- not that you'd want to, everyone drives like a maniac on the wrong side of the road.
If you golf, this is heaven. Enjoy, even though the greens fees are a bit high.
Do a sunset cruise with drinks.

Everything's expensive, but we love the place.

The ferries are another great way to get around. You can buy a pass that's good for both buses and ferries, and that's way less expensive than taking cabs everywhere.

I've never thought of Hamilton as "honky-tonk," but St. George is definitely much quieter.

10 things I realized while in Jamaica:

1. There are 27 shades of blue that I rarely see and seeing them all at once is enough to take your breath away.
2. Fugazi is the band that Pearl Jam only wishes it could be.
3. While I listen to Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere more often, Zuma is still my favorite Neil Young album.
4. Having been upgraded to Business Class on one of my flights, it is almost worth the extra cost.
5. It's A Shame About Ray by The Lemonheads has to be one of the most underrated albums of the 90's.
6. I'm not embarrassed to sign along with The Yes Album...and I know more of the words than I thought I might.
7. The key to treading water for long periods of time is to relax.
8. I'd take Lady Gaga over Madonna at the same point in her career.
9. I would be a dead man if someone put a gun to my head and asked me to choose between Meddle, Wish You Were Here and Animals.
10. The MLB shop at the Montego Bay airport has been replaced by a Harley-Davidson store.

Albums listened to in Jamaica:
Animals - Pink Floyd
Ben Kweller - Ben Kweller
Blues For The Red Sun - Kyuss
End Hits - Fugazi
Girls Can Tell - Spoon
It's A Shame About Ray - The Lemonheads
Let It Be - The Replacements
Meddle - Pink Floyd
Prospects of Living Daily (EP) - System and Station
Sky Blue Sky - Wilco
Temple of the Dog - Temple of the Dog
The Best Of - Radiohead
The Fame Monster - Lady Gaga
The Yes Album - Yes
Think Tank - Blur
Turn On The Bright Lights - Interpol
Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd

Orlando, Florida, last week of March. Visit my father in law and do touristy stuff with the kids, maybe Disney, maybe not.

Looks like it sets up nicely too for Mets @ Nats in Melbourne on Tuesday March 29th. One of the last few games before they go up north and I don't have to haul all the way down to Port St Lucie.

Also works out great because we fly home during the day Friday, and I'll be home in time for the season opener that Friday night.

Ah, she's a lovely girl, half-Chinese [via 'How many nationalities have you been with??'], smart, funny, and considerate, too. She's very, very... sweet. And after Sydney, Portland feels like nothing. I practically feel suffocated. Lame-ass jokes aside, she's a good egg (& more 'age-appropriate'). I think I'd be OK if something came of this.

Just wrapping up five days in Orlando. Two of which were filled non-stop with torrential downpouring rain.

We still managed to fit in three trips to the pool, two trips to visit my father-in-law for drinking beer in the garage, the Kennedy Space Center, bowling, Gatorland, a Mets game, the Magic Kingdom, and a drive to Tampa and back to visit my grandmother.

Re: Vacations 2K11

Italy in about six weeks. A friend of a friend is a licensed ship's captain, and he's leased a fifty-foot sailboat in early June, and we'll be sailing around Sardinia and Corsica.

So I'll be trimming sails, battening hatches, hooking jibs, and doing whatever else it is you're supposed to do on a sailboat. Hell, I don't know. My sailing experience consists of pedal boat rentals. Also, when I was a teenager in Staten Island, I used to take the ferry a lot. But supposedly, all this sailboaty stuff can be learned. And it will be fun.

Also, we'll be spending one day in Rome before the trip and one day in Rome after the trip. Any recommendations for places to stay in Rome?

We stayed at the Hotel Canada, a Best Western property. Since we were a family of four, we had very few options, and this was the best of the few.* It's near Termini, the mail rail station, which was convenient. Both main subway lines run through Termini (the one to the Vatican and the one to the Colosseum) as well as the train to and from the airport.

*That sounds like faint praise, but it's not how I intended it. Just saying that if you're in a smaller party, you'll have a far greater number of choices.

There's outlet shopping, which wouldn't interest you but might interest Mrs. Sage. As would the spa at the Hotel Hershey (the chocolate massage there was the best massage I've ever had). A few years ago (longer than that, pre-MK) we took the kids to the pretzel factory in Lititz, which they enjoyed. And Hershey isn't far from Lancaster - you might enjoy the restaurants there (family-style and very kid-friendly).

Have fun!

Ah, yes. Big ass breakfast, chased with a nice afternoon of gawking at the Amish.

If you're taking an alternate, more northerly route, you could swing by America's Oldest Brewery-- Yuengling-- in Pottsville (about 20-30 minutes from Hershey) or "Crayola Factory" in Easton (90 minutes, en route to NYC).

Not been to Nova Scotia. I have been to Prince Edward Island, however.

And I just got back from two weeks in France.

Three days in Strasbourg which is about as long as you want to be there but it is a pretty town with a river running through the middle of it. Sausages and saurkraut, can't go wrong.

Then we were 11 days in Paris. Every day was about 75-80 degrees. We had a fabulous apartment near Place de Clichy. On the sixth floor and a walkup but great once inside. Most days we would pack a lunch, leave the apartment in the morning, walk around for about 5 hours sightseeing and such (stopping to eat in one of the thousands of little parks they have), go back to the apartment to crash for about 2 hours and then do it all over again at night, eating in one really good place after the other.

Thuggish guys there wear MFY hats. No surprise.

When you fly Air France they give you champagne before dinner, then wine with dinner and then cognac afterwords. They are a civilized race, these French.

Yes, we had a nice visit, took a car ferry from Maine to New Brunswick, then to Digby in Nova Scotia. We camped on the beach there, went on a boat trip and saw some whales. Digby is like a quaint summer fishing town, very much like Maine only with polite people. Famous for scallops. Halifax is an old industrial/military city with a hip college town vibe. It's got a great history, having exploded once, which I'm sure you'll learn about if you visit and see the Maritime museum there.

Skip the Alexander Keith brewery tour in Halifax, it's a total ripoff.

Got back from Mexico tonite. Here's a tip. Be sure not to schedule international travel 2 weeks after your passport expires and find out about it as you're pulling into longterm parking at JFK. Yup. I sent Wifey and Lunchpail ahead on the scheduled flight and I flew to and from the passport office in the city panicking and hating myself. Got very lucky when a guard there told me a secret that cut 95 minutes off my waiting time to get new documents and literally running to catch the departing flight carrying my shoes from security check I flew in only 5 hours behind my family, same day arrival.

Mexico was very nice, great weather, beautiful beaches, easy lazy resort life was what we needed.

Yeah, I didn't know Passports could expire, and until we got to the airport had no clue they could be renewed in a day. That process is a complete clusterfuck however. Requires that you have a travel itinerary to be eligible for the fast renew option. I had the ticket for my flight that morning, but they wouldn't accept it because there was no way for them to get a passport in time to make that flight. I had to rebook my flight for the later one, then get that info printed out, along with a new photo at a deli next door.

Then they process your paperwork at the firont desk and send you upstairs to vast waiting room where there are hundreds of people waiting. There was a 1:35 wait just to get the paperwork and payment, then another hour or more to get the actual passport made. I guess the guard at the upstairs waiting room saw the panic on my face and took pity. He said, "I didn't tell you this but..." and suggested I go to a certain area of the waiting room and ask for a supervisor. "Don't tell them I told you or I'll deny it." Sure enough that 90-minute wait was cut down to 5 minutes. Still had to wait an hour for them to make it, and as it turned out I could not have waited any more than I did and still make the flight. Backup plan was a 5 am flight the next day, so it wasn't a huge deal, but the stress level was over the top.

Wifey was going through the itinerary and stuff in the car. She actually said, "Let's see if our passports have expired," and sure enough, just as we pulled into the lot. Mine expired April 2.

I've stayed at that Marriott a couple of times. I agree, it's a very nice hotel in a great location. (On my visit to San Juan last year, we couldn't get a room there, so we stayed at La Concha, a couple of blocks away, also a very good choice.)

On that trip last summer, I flew to San Juan, and rented a car there, with an expired driver's license. Nobody noticed. I didn't catch it myself until months later when I went to get an International Drivers License for my trip to Portugal and Spain. I had to hustle to get it renewed, but I, at least, had weeks, not hours, like Johnny did with his passport.

I wonder... would there (should there) have been any problem using an expired drivers license as ID prior to boarding a domestic flight? For the car rental, I suppose we could have rented in my wife's name if Dollar had caught the expiration.

I didn't think it was too bad. I had a worse time driving south on Main Street in Flushing yesterday after the Mets game. (I've driven that stretch many times, and this was the first time it seemed bad to me. There were all kinds of obstacles; double-parked cars and perpendicular-parked police cars.)

Worst driving experience ever: Palermo, Sicily. No lines painted in the streets, no stop signs or lights at many intersections. Every inch was a battle.

policy

Additional, Overweight, & Oversized Baggage

We try our best to accommodate all baggage needs; however, bags that do not meet our size and weight restrictions require special handling and additional fees.
Note that you will incur separate fees for exceeding our size, weight, and quantity limitations. For example, if an extra piece of baggage exceeds the weight and size limits, it will be subject to three fees: one for the extra bag, one for exceeding the weight limit, and one for going over the size restriction. Fees are charged for each additional bag, each way.

some of the pricing is $90 per bag

90 USD/CAD for bags weighing 51-70 lbs.
175 USD/CAD for bags weighing 71-100 lbs.
Bags exceeding 100 lbs. are not allowed

Currently in West Yellowstone, Montana. Our two-week vacation will end on Wednesday when we fly home from Salt Lake City. Went to Arches National Park in Utah, and Grand Teton and Yellowstone in Wyoming. Also saw a rodeo in Cody, Wyoming.

I'll probably post a few photos after I get home.

That's in Stowe, or thereabouts? Was there for a wedding around this time of year a few years back and it was effin beautiful.

I'm just off a beautiful 18-day work-free stretch and a jaunt all over California with Sheila and select members of her fam. Trip started LBC -> Malibu -> Santa Barbara -> Hearst Castle. We camped and hiked Big Sur for 3 days, had 4 in Santa Cruz eating fish tacos and riding old timey roller coasters, a day trip to Monterrey (aquarium, Cannery Row), a couple days at Big Basin Redwoods Park, and 5 amazing, expen$ive days tramping around San Francisco (viva la Misión! and North Beach is rad, too). Awesome, awesome times. Dear God, I love that city. The chick's pretty alright, too.

Going to Florida next so my Mom doesn't kick me out of the family for never visiting.

we don't have a plan just yet, only airline tixx. We have friends in hololulu we will stay with most likely, also some relatives who retired there. Is flying the best way to island hop? We are open to any suggestions.

Flying is pretty much the only way to island hop. There is limited ferry service but it's very limited, and very slow. (My info may be a little out of date; it was three years ago that we were there.)

I think we flew into Hilo when we went to Volcano. There are discount airlines that operate in Hawaii. One of them is called Go. I forget the others.

I don't think they have any non-airplane ways to island hop. (at least not mainstream. I think the ferry closed down) I think it was ~$50-75 a person one way between isles when I was there a year ago. They're all pretty quick flights. faster than Times Square to Citi Field on the local.

We just did one double-hop from Kauai to Kona when we were there.

Volcano National Park was pretty cool, although I pysched myself up for standing next to flowing rivers of lava, and that's not really what it's like. Hilo airport is closer to it than Kona, but both are a couple hours trip I think. There are bus tours.

Kona Brewing Company is awesome though. I recommend the Coconut Brown. Koko Brown or whatever it's called.

My & a girl I was dating tried to pull that move back in Maui in 2001. Turned our 1 week vacay into 1 1/2, then 2, then I decided I didn't want to leave ever & got my resume sent over & started answering ads in the paper. Went on 2 interviews, was told I was overqualified for both. I didn't care, but they had a feeling I'd bolt as soon as I got settled. Tried to get a gig strumming guitar & slinging lil cocktails w/ umbrellas, too, but that's a harder job to get over there than one for an IT stiff. Got home in August and kept trying, then September came and tourism went belly-up there, and they quit hiring anyone. Dream. Over.

Have fun, JCL. Rent some longboards in Waikiki, see the USS Arizona, & maybe peep the north shore, then maybe start island hopping. Oahu's pretty, but a lot of city life.

Re: Vacations 2K11

Had a nice time in Puerto Rico.

Three nights in Culebra. As Irish noted, pretty basic but maybe the most beautiful beach I've ever seen. Had a good jeep to drive around in. In the offseason some of the few restaurants are closed and the ones that are opened are uninspiring at best. We'd lounge around all day, eating food we'd bought and then at night go into the only town on the island and eat the mediocre food and drink the drinks. People we met, both Culebrans and travellers, were great. The flight to San Juan was cheap (around $275) and the villa gave us 3 nights for the price of two plus a two-for-one offer for the puddle jumper flight to Culebra so we had three days of cheap vacation living.

On Saturday we flew to San Juan where we spent a lot on dinner at a fantastic place and drank expensive drinks. I justified it because it was my birthday (unnoted here) and I was on vacation.

Definitely felt like I'd been away and recharged. Back to work tomorrow.

We're looking at the very same joint, at least for one night.

Our plan as of the moment is to do 3 days/2 nites on the big island, flying to Hilo in the early am, staying in Volcano at the YMCA camp, seeing more park the next day then driving to a B&B near rural South Point for night 2. That allows a quicker drive to the Kona side for day 3 and flying back from there that evening.

Does that sound realistic?

Definitely. Are you planning on two days at the National park or spending the first in Hilo a little? I'm not sure if the park's big enough for that, especially if things are closed because of the sulfur.

There is virtually nothing between the park and Kona via South Point. There's virtually nothing at South Point. It's actually kind of refreshing sometimes. But it's definitely doable, we drove back from Volcano after sunset and were back in Kailua-Kona in plenty of time. (Time for what? well, a night-cap Mai Tai or something..) There's a very pretty Black Sand beach,Punalu'u on the road there that's a good stop. Black sand! TurtleS!
