Voltron

First of all, why attack separately as lions week after week, only to get your ass kicked? I'm guessing that security issues (and parking) makes it tough to leave Voltron assembled when not in use, but if Keith had any value as a leader, he'd coordinate a rendezvous point, assemble Voltron, form the Blazing Sword, then attack. I'm surprised no one on the Voltron Force thought to bring this to his attention. If Keith were managing the Mets, there would be lots of bunting.

I imagine Zarkon and Lotor were equally as frustrated with Haggar over her winless record against Voltron. She seems capable of churning out ferocious Robeast after Robeast, but then sends each one individually to its doom. Why not take a few weeks off from attacking, let Voltron grow complacent, assemble a massive army of Robeasts, then attack? You know the Lions are going to foolishly attack individually. Each Robeast takes a lion, crushes him, no more Voltron. If Keith is Jerry Manuel, Haggar is Omar. And Zarkon and Lotor are Fred and Jeff. Except Lotor is better looking than Jeff.

And what's up with the car Voltron?

Few things were worse as a kid than tuning into Voltron to find it was a car Voltron episode. Infuriating.

Re: Voltron

well, the episodes would be over lickety-split if they just went and formed voltron straight away. i think it had something to do with the honor code of the voltron force, in some other words. the lions were a defensive mechanism, and could not be used for offense, but voltron himself could only be formed as a weapon of last resort. i think.

plus, the one thing i never really understood was how, with the whole invincible robot thing, why had they been so worried over whether the princess could handle the job? hell, couldn't they stick one of the damned mice in the drivers' seat, teach him to turn the key, and let him punch a few buttons at random? he might not be terribly effective, but it's not like the robeasts are going to destroy him. hey, then it'd be like ollie!

I guess I was born too soon for this. (1963) I'm not at all familiar with any of it.

Because she was the princess, and this was before princesses were allowed to kick ass in cartoons.

Re: Voltron

Simple. It's sexism. Those macho space guys had pre-conceived notions about women drivers.

By the way, found this little tidbit while searching for pictures.

Haggar, before she turned to evil and really let herself go, was once pretty hot.

Sorry Ben. I think this thread will be limited to about a five year age group.

Go figure. Princess Allura, FWIW, was pretty hot too.

Re: Voltron

I rock the old school giant robot superheroes...

Gigantor, Gigantor, Gigantor.

Gigantor the space aged robot,
He is at your command.
Gigantor the space aged robot,
His power is in your hand.

Bigger than big, taller than tall,
Quicker than quick, stronger than strong.
Ready to fight for right, against wrong.

Gigantor, Gigantor, Gigantor.

Ah, yes... I do remember Gigantor!

And although he didn't come along until, I think, 1997, the Iron Giant is also very cool.

I've been waiting for Iron Giant's pieces to reassemble themselves for 13 years.

Re: Voltron

Voltron is separate from Transformers, yes?

Lunchpail is crazy about Transformers -- he saw a DVD of the old cartoon stories and was Optimus Prime for Halloween. I don;t think he understands there was a movie based on the cartoon in between.

Anyway, was looking for transformer toys fpr xmas only to discover that many of them don't even transform into anything. WTF is up with that?

Separate but similar, yes. We watched the 1986 movie with MiniWolf; I think the recent live action one might be a little much for him. Most of the new toys transform, but they kinda suck; the parts are cheaper and plastic-er, which means they don't break as easily. They do have different age ranges of Transformers now; the younger the toy is aimed, the less it transforms.

Re: Voltron

I can't transform any of the new Transformers. Too complicated for me.

I was really into Transformers as a kid. Had all the toys and such. In retrospect though, I seem to be more fond of Voltron.

I see that the kids have some Power Rangers thing that's popular today. To me, it looks like the Voltron crew minus Voltron.

Voltron gave me a hard on when I was a kid. Of course, this is before I knew what a vagina was.

Re: Voltron

I think budgetary reasons kept them from assembling the big magilla until/unless it became necessary.

I had a Battle of the Planets thing in junior high (yeah, so what?), and they had a ship called the Phoenix that could go into the invulnerable "Fiery Phoenix" mode, but not until they hadta. Defintely a budget issue.

What a buncha Nazis they turned out to be.

This. I'm thinking it's a fuel efficiency thing (hence the travel-as-lions/assemble-on-site thing, too).

-- Car Voltron was a terrible show... but a great friggin' toy. Think Voltron or one of the multi-robot Transformers... if there were 32 of 'em.

-- Underrated robot/space cartoon from the same period? Robotech. It was like "Falcon Crest" with robot planes.

Re: Voltron

I loved Battle of the Planets. I even bought a few DVD's a few years ago for Ryan.

The budget idea makes perfect sense. Cheapass planet.

The Fiery Phoenix also had to be used sparingly because it seemed to hurt the team whenever they went into it. Lots of screaming and wavy-lined background and such.
