College Bound

My older son is a high school senior, and he just received his first college acceptance. Not only did he get into Hofstra, but they awarded him a $19,000/year Presidential Scholarship!

Re: College Bound

Thanks mm!

What's funny is that the envelope arrived around noon. I knew he was in - not only was it a large envelope, but in big letters it said "Congratulations" on the front. What we didn't know was that he was awarded such a substantial scholarship.

We'll hear from Marist by the end of January. After that, it'll be decision time.

Re: College Bound

Great work.

My godfather/uncle is an aggresive Hofstra benefactor and I know all too well about school with the bridge over the turnpike.

Ten cool Hofstra facts:

1. Other schools have green grounds, but Hofstra's is an actual certified and impressive arboretum.

2. Other schools do Shakespeare, but they have a replica of the Globe Theatre.

3. Originally established as an extension of NYU, so he and his sister are in a sense keeping it in the family.

4. Bill Hofstra was an immigrant from Holland and the college established an insignia based on the seal of the House of Orange. (Hofstra has a serious claim to Orangemen status too.)

5. Bernie Madoff, Christopher Walken, and James Caan all went to Hofstra --- a creep and two actors creepy enough to play him... creepy!

6. Changed their nickname from the Flying Dutchmen to the Pride for no good reason. OK, it's kinda sexist and the world is moving away from ethnic nicknames, but besides that...

7. Thier famed high-rise dorms were simply called A, B, C, D, E, and F, but in 1982, somebody shot Ronald Reagan and we suddenly woke up to the fact that America was awesome, and Hofstra renamed the towers "Alliance," "Bill of Rights," "Constitution," "Declaration of Independence," "Enterprise," and "Freedom."

8. Is (coincidentally) associated with some of the most notorious drug busts in American higher ed history, including

[list=a][*]a 1970s bust that was profoundly unconstitutional (ironically at Halls that would one day be named "Constitution," "Bill of Rights," etc.) --- legend has it that dope was raining from the sky that day;
[/*:m]
[*]a 1991 (non-campus) case where a football coach was murdered by some dealers;
[/*:m]
[*]a 2009 case where a group of Pulp Fiction freaks tied up their RA and tormented him with weapons because they didn't like the cocaine he sold them.[/*:m][/list:o]

9. Cut football after 69 years. Who is Fordham going to beat now? Columbia?!

10. Oscar Hijuelos on faculty. Yeah, he's not there anymore, but I sure didn't have Pulitzer winner on faculty at my school.

Good luck to him.

Re: College Bound

Dr. Dana Brand is also on the Hofstra faculty, teaching in the Honors College.

This is step one in the process. We're thrilled with the acceptance, and with the scholarship. However, my son fell in love with Marist when he attended a summer program there over the summer. We'll find out by the end of January about his Early Action application there.

He may be facing a very tough decision, but luckily it'll be one where there's no wrong choice.

Re: College Bound

Congrats, and I'll take this time to expand on a story that I hinted at on facebook a couple of weeks ago involving a Nestle Aero bar.

I "discovered" the things in a vending machine at Heathrow airport, and was hooked. (the Mint ones specifically) I'd launched a quest to find them locally (having some success at a random deli in Bayside). When I went up to visit Buffalo, we went over the border to Niagara Falls, and tada! in the gift shop was a mint Nestle aero bar, and my decision on where to go to college was finalized.

Thanks guys.

This isn't a done deal yet, though. We're still waiting on Marist.

But it'll be down to those two schools, I'm pretty sure.

And LOL Ceetar about picking a college based on the availability of Aero bars

Quick question about Hofstra's campus. There is this big arch structure across the Hemstead Turnpike welcoming you to Hofstra.

Other than decorative, is there a purpose for it?

Wow! Time flies.
Best of everything to all concerned, students and proud parents.
When you looked at schools, was driving distance a factor?
We only looked a schools in the East, (Mainly northeast). One daughter went to Binghamton and the other to Maryland. I could (and did) make the round trip to Maryland in one day to drop her and her stuff off. (just about 600 mi. round trip).

Re: College Bound

Distance was a factor, yes. Not the prevailing factor - if one of my kids really wanted to attend a school that was further away, we would have been open to that. But all else being equal, we preferred a school that was reachable via mass transit (in my son's case he can take Amtrak or Metro North into the City and NJ Transit from there).

We have to start the search all over again for MK, who is in his sophomore year....

On the subject of time flying, Freshman year is over. In the spring semester, my son got four A's and a B+, which gives him a 3.86 GPA for the semester and an overall GPA of 3.758.

We had one year of being empty nesters, and then our older son graduated and moved back home. It's nice having him around, and it's nice to have someone to take care of things at home when D-Dad and I go out of town. While we're still in the house, we're happy that that it's not so empty.
