Expectations for Eleven: D.J. Carrasco

The Andy Hassler of our time joins us on Expectations for Eleven. We skipped him alphabetically when we did Luis Castillo, and, well, I'm just as embarrassed as I can be.

Wifey: Autumn

Last Word: He seemed like a decent move to shore up the bullpen, but it was a few weeks before anybody noticed that he has incentive clauses regarding possibly starting for the Mets, which might well have told us how this offseaosn was going to unfold has we checked at the time. He chats with some blog guy here.

What do you expect of D.J. Carrasco in 2011?

I don't expect that much out of him, but he seems to be getting paid a fair amount for a bullpen possible.

Maybe he'll be a semi-reliable bullpen guy. Working regularly, getting guys out.

45 games, ERA around 3.80. Five wins in relief, three saves.

Probably very similar to last years numbers. (btw, you left off his Pittsburgh numbers for last year)

I suspect around 3.5 ERA 60-70 games, and one or two big blowup moments where I suspect he'll take on the persona of hated Mets reliever and people will make up funny things D.J. stands for.

How about that?

I'll fix it. He's an Arizona native. Both he and his wife grew up near Tucson, in fact, so he's probably been as sick as I was this weekend.

49 games.
3.89 ERA/1.43whip
1-4 record
1 spot start.
total of 62 & 1/3 innings

ends up becoming the 7th inning guy.

Here's one way of framing it... what Met will he most resemble? Hassler? Rick White? Mike DeJean?

He'll have only a so-so spring but unexpectedly provide key relief and a victory in an inspirational come-from-behind win, after which he'll be installed as the New Eighth Inning Guy and appear in 16 of the next 19 games, providing a half-dozen Holds, a win, and a save and just 2 earned runs in 16.2 innings. Called on to preserve a 4-run lead on the 20th game, his fourth-straight, results in a hit batsmen, two walks and a first-pitch grand slam off the Acela Club to the opposing catcher, a weak-hitting defensive specialist who closed his eyes and hacked. Mets go on to lose the game in extra innings, and Carrasco makes his next appearance in a mop-up situation, in August.

Oh, wait, that's what would happen if Jerry Manuel were still managing. Under Terry, 3-3, 3.80, and first Met to wear No. 77 in combat.

77 would be awesome. I love hockey numbers on baseball guys.

I'll go 55 games, 1 start, 79 IP, w/a 3.60 ERA/1.37 WHIP, 62K/30 BB, 2-4 record.

When he enters a game the night after having gotten through a tough inning, this will be playing.

In retrospect, this should have been Pedro Feliciano's music.

I have no expectations for DJ Carrasco. I don't even know who he is.

I expect him to spin some great tunes.
