Trivia (again)

batmagadanleadoff
Jan 05 2011 09:09 AM

Here's a variation on yesterday's trivia theme. Today, we're looking for the Mets who hit the most HR's in their entire MLB careers. So who are the top 40 Mets in this category? 41 technically, because there's a two way tie for the 40th spot.

Take one point for each player guessed right that's ranked 1-30. Take two points for each player guessed right that's ranked 31-40.

Deduct two points for each wrong answer. One guess per post. Deduct three points for each post with multiple guesses.

Adam Rubin and I lobby for repeat guesses to be penalized points-- if not now, in the future-- so as to hedge against indiscriminate spray-guessers.

Also, I should totally get degree-of-difficulty points for my guesses, which are like connoisseurs' answers.

Also, also, Gravedigger. BOOM!

well, Bay will jump into the top 40 this season (you'd hope)

Wright would need 34 to tie Hebner for 40th.

Castillo, if he gets the job, would need 175.

There were only three wrong answers. Two of the wrongs were the first two Mets to miss the cut. Amazin'. Amazin'. Amazin'.

Over the years, I've read all about the failed --doomed from the start, apparently-- relationship between Hebner, the Mets and Mets fans. But I don't seem to remember any of it as it was happening. This Hebner saga is like one big history lesson for me. And I was around for the '79 Mets.

I'm probably the biggest (only) Kevin McReynolds backer around here, and it's sad to me that he fell off the table so quickly. If only steroids had been around a few years sooner, he'd be over 300.

If you'd asked me, though, who had more career HR between McReynolds and Todd Hundley, I would have said Hundley in a second.

Hubie didn't make the cut. I should've extended this contest through the top 48 (or 50). The extra credits are tough ones. But I thought that no one would get Conine or Hebner for a long while. So perhaps, I'm underestimating you guys.

Conine was the only other zero-homer guy as a Met in the Top 41.

I've taken the liberty of looking up the extra credit answers and one guy in there was also of the no-homer variety, and he's a guy I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have considered as Top 50 material if I devoted the next 50 hours to this.

There's still two slots open. Milner could be one of them. Tommy Davis had a long career. So did Jim Hickman. He played in Wrigley, ya know. That's who I'd be thinking about if I was playing. Willie Montanez hit 30 HR's as a runner up 1971 ROY to Earl Williams (33 HR's). Today, writers considered Carlos Baerga's HOF worthiness.

Mike Marshall hit 121 HR's from 1983 through 1988. Marshall's presence on the Mets kept Dave Magadan on Buddy's bench for more time than Mags ought to have sat. Magadan himself wasn't much of a HR hitter, but he did carve out a 16 year MLB career. Sometimes, slow and steady wins the race.

Tony Clark and Jeff Conine are in the top 40. This is the extra credit round, where forum members try to "guess" spots 43 -50. I skipped spots 41 (Otis) and 42 (Bay) because those were submitted as wrong answers in the top 40 phase of this tournament. I put the words "guess" in quotes. Guess why? Or, I should [crossout:10lkudjv]say[/crossout:10lkudjv] write: "Guess" why? The top 40 list was solved, collectively, in like 26 seconds, with no wrong answers. Not even John Milner. Here's the baseball reference link to baseball's all time career HR leaders if anybody wants to cheat. Not that I suspect such a thing. http://www.baseball-reference.com/leade ... reer.shtml I'm posting this link because I know that no one will click on it prior to submitting any "guesses".

Ken Henderson was a Met for 15 minutes. But he was a major leaguer for 16 seasons. In the four full seasons Ken played between 1970 and 1974 (he was injured in '73 and missed more than half of that season) Ken hit 70 HR's. That's more than half way to the top 50 in just four seasons.

Re: Trivia (again)

I went over this list carefully. So it couldn't be that I skipped over Jay Bell's name. What happened is that I simply forgot that Jay Bell was ever a Met to begin with. FWIW, the reigning champion to this trivia contest, G-Fafif, also whiffed on Bell. I know this because he said that he peeked at the extra credit answers after the top 40 list was solved and saw that there was one "no HR's as a Met" in the extra credit round (Wilson). So I'm in good company. Unless G-Fafif remembered that Bell was a Met but thought that Bell hit at least one Met HR. That's a possibility.

Missed him? To tell you the truth, I barely remember him. Did I ever tell you that in both the 2003 and 2004 seasons, (the Art Howe years) I became totally disinterested in the Mets right around the All-Star Break? I don't think I watched 10 games total, combining the second half of Howe's two full seasons. And I was a full season ticket holder during the Howe era. When I look at those rosters, there are some players that I can't even visualize. Eric Valent? Who the hell was he?

I like to think of Bell as the most counterproductive Met ever. I'm probably wrong, and there's a pitcher from 1962 with a 7.11 ERA over 59 innings, but damn --- 142 plate appearances and three RBI --- there's a guy who retired before he retired.

You know, when Mo Vaughn got hurt that year, Bell was our original replacement at first. Jay Bell!

I blame Rey Ordonez for the Melvin Mora fiasco. I blame Fred Wilpon, who I believe, rolled over Bobby Valentine and caved in to pressure from the Mike and the Mad Dog crowd: that ilk preferred stupid pop up slides and other empty calories instead of one HR a week from your freakin' shortstop.

It's about time this round of trivia ended. What took you so long?
