Meanwhile, Jersey Governor Chris Christie makes his first State of the State Address wearing the colors of his favorite team:

Unless Christie starts offering Mets license plates in Jersey, or sets it up so donating blood here gets Mets tickets, I couldn't care less who he claims to root for.

I like to see both Demeritcrats and Repuiglicans in Mets colors, 'specially if they mean it.

I, too, can do without the blue-and-orange perp walks.

I have to admit that there are some pols I would have a tough time embracing into the tribe-- Cheney's one of those rare ones, methinks-- but ultimately, I think sincerity is the thing for me; if you're really, truly interested in and invested in the team-- and that interest must extend to the current day, even if the investment may wax and wane*-- then I'll tip my hat to you, buy you a beer and/or accept one, and discuss all things Metly (or just plain baseball-y).

*Either you're on point with the current state of affairs, or you're beating yourself up about it, and you'll get caught up as soon as you can. Maybe it's the residual Catholicism in me, but I'll take guilt/repentance-in-trade.

Baseball is so seductive, you can find yourself ignoring it all year, as I do, and then the series comes or a McGwire hits 61 home runs and you find yourself with moist eyes, cheering.

Gotta love that. Baseball is so great, even phonies like me are inspired to pretend to like it.

We made ourselves unfashionable by cheering for Mike Piazza, and when I got home I found myself singing a song called Benny Abgayani, to the tune of “Gary Indiana,” from “The Music Man.”

I am fairly certain that not only would she compose the whitest Song Parody entry we'd ever seen, but that she'd come damn close to composing the whitest satirical pop song humanly possible. I'm talking a Doris Day song in barbershop-quartet harmonies, accompanied by folk guitar, with friends shouting "ironic" rap lyrics and clapping on one and three until the damn thing ended.

My sister sent me this column when it first ran as some kind of well-meaning reach across the 180-degree divide that separates us politically. I asked her to please keep the Mets out of it -- and informed her that in my then 30+ years of fandom I'd never heard of these "Metties". Haven't heard of them in the ten years since, either.

What a wordsmith.

Perhaps, but you'd have to admire the effort. Then again, with all the time she spends ignoring baseball, there's definitely the time to work on it.

Happened to have the WNBC/4 late local news on last night while trying to put YoungerPooper back to bed, and, after sports anchor Bruce Beck rattled off updates about the NFL labor talks, the night's Ranger game, and some Carmelo Anthony-related event, he threw it back to the anchors to close the show.

Longtime WNBC anchor Sue Simmons, who's no stranger to oddly-timed blurts, mutters, "Well, I guess I'll have to check my DVR to see those two scoreless innings Ollie Perez tossed."

When TV news first started to get away from being all white Ken & Barbie clones one of the first and favorite hiring targets was white-looking black chicks.

As for her looking ever more whiter these days I suppose that's either the lighting of that particular photo or the result of getting too many chemical skin peel procedures to go along with the facelifts.

Met-Lovin Big Shots, according to Paste Magazine:

New York Mets

Musician: Ira Kaplan
Band: Yo La Tengo
Why he loves the Mets and how Yo La Tengo got their name: The story dates back to the 1962 Mets. We’ll let Ira tell the tale in this video.
Fan-o-meter: 94/100

Musician: Daniel Balk
Band: The Postelles
Why he loves the Mets: "Yes, the Mets continue to collapse at the end of every season, just missing out on the playoffs year after year. It’s also true that they continuously overpay for mediocre players, while the owners complain about bankruptcy. But I still love them, like a father loves a son who comes home at the end of every school year with Cs and Ds on his report card. I admit I scream at my television all too often and I’ve also spent too much money at the bar at Citi Field in order to numb myself from the pain of watching the Mets make a 20-year-old no-name pitcher look like Sandy Koufax.

Yet I still watch every game, even if I’m on the road and have to pay for a yearly subscription to watch them on my laptop. I can guarantee I was the only person in London watching the Mets as I sat in my hotel room, hoping for a win during our last U.K. tour. Though one night comes to mind as I think about how the Mets have directly affected my music career: As we played one of our first shows in New York City in a tiny Lower East Side bar, I spent our entire 30-minute set watching my Mets on the tiny bar television across from the stage. In between songs I’d clap as the Mets crossed the plate to take the lead. This of course looked like I was clapping for my own band’s achievement of finishing a song. I smile as I remember all the great memories the Mets have brought me and I hope they bring many more."
Balk’s least favorite recent transaction by the Mets: Oliver Perez’s $36 million contract.
Fan-o-meter: 81/100

The Postelles! Not bad! Sexy chick in the vid, too!

I think I've heard that too. Maybe he pushed for his character to be a Yankee fan because he wanted to show some jerkish tendency that he feels that "E" has? Or maybe he's suddenly a long-time Mets fan because he sees a shot at being something of an insider. Who knows?

Either way... good choice!

After a four-year courtship, he proposed to Melinda Brady, a secretary, at an Islander game in 2006 -- by popping the question on the Nassau Coliseum's Jumbotron screen. It read, "Melinda, will you marry me. Love, David."

He grew up in Oakland and was a fan of the Athletics. I remember when he went on a baseball road trip w/Ron Howard and others. Since they have a few bucks, they did the trip the way you'd want to: they rented a bus and hired a driver.

Dodger-Lovin' Big Shot Kareem Abdul-Jabbar calls out one of baseball's Horrible Bosses, Frank McCourt. Entertaining rant, though for a kid whose team abandoned him when he was 10 years old -- and for a kid who got a new team in his neighborhood as a fifteenth birthday present -- too bad he never made the switch to MLBS.

In any event, he and Fred must have a lot to talk about.

I often wonder how this would have played out if the Dodgers were still in the borough of Brooklyn. My guess is Brooklynites would have thrown the perpetrators of this type of farce out on their ears. I wondered the same thing, actually, when the Steve Bartman incident happened in Wrigley Field a few years back. You'll recall that he interfered with a foul ball that the Cubs' left fielder was trying to catch for a crucial out, an incident that very well might have changed the outcome of that 2003 playoff game. Would Bartman have made it out of the stands alive if that had happened in Ebbets Field?

Brooklyn fans could be tough.

Waiting in the courthouse to destify against my designated face puncher, I was surrounded by MPD officers waiting to testify in 10 different courtrooms. Many were in uniform, but a handful were in plainclothes. The baseball jersey count included one Nats, one Orioles, and two Mets --- a black home jersey and a classick road gray.

Neither had any numbers on the front, and cops never show you their backs, apparently even when surrounded by other cops.

More on the Hoodoo Gurus' affection for the Mets from a recent fb post from Faulkner:

I went to my first MLB game at Yankee Stadium in when I was 21 years old (!). It was versus Texas Rangers and I remember that Dale Berra was playing for Texas. We bought scalped tickets outside and were seated behind home plate (not bad!). My american friend explained the finer points of the strategies to me as we watched and I was pretty much hooked. As I got more knowledgeable I came to favour the National League (I'm not a fan of the DH rule) and as NYC was my home-away-from-home I chose the Mets. Never regretted it for a moment, despite the frequent heartbreak.

It seems to be the other tiresome trend in TV. Sexy, stylish and morally ambiguous times in the sexy, stylish, morally ambiguous early-mid sixties. Women are exploited as mere sex things, but they push back within the narrow confines they are permitted to exist in. This makes them sexier and more exploitable. Tune in!

They shouldn't have torn down Shea, but rather brought it back to it's early look and rented it out as a filming location.

The mania for Mad Men fashionability recent led Target to re-launch a line of classic Missoni post-war looks on the middle class, segments of whom, you may or may not have noticed, have gone nuts and stormed the stores (and crashed the website). They've bought the stores out of --- and please feel free to disagree --- some questionable fashion choices.

Egyptian uprising prisoner Ilan Grapel.

Report: Ilan Grapel told Mets won Series
By Adam Rubin

After being freed following a nearly five-month stint in an Egyptian jail during that country's uprising, Queens native Ilan Grapel received interesting news: The New York Mets won the World Series during his isolation.

Mets blog
Looking for more information on your Mets? ESPNNewYork.com has you covered. Blog

The misinformation was a joke played by Rep. Gary Ackerman, according to the New York Post.

In a news conference in Tel Aviv following his release, the newspaper reports, Grapel said: "There's so many people to thank, and after being cut off for the past five months ..."

At that point, the Post reports, Ackerman chimed in: "We told him the Mets won the World Series."

Grapel, a 27-year-old U.S.-Israeli citizen, was freed Thursday in a prisoner swap between Israel and Egypt.

The Emory University law student arrived at John F. Kennedy International Airport Saturday morning. He said he was arrested June 12 while attending a demonstration in Cairo and was accused of spying for Israel, which denied the allegation.

Adam Rubin covers the Mets for ESPNNewYork.com. Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
