Track of the Day, 2011

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr
Jan 03 2011 09:00 AM

I dig it (Ed: referring to the end of this thread), and I dig Stevie.

But I think it's just a great aesthetic toe-dip.

For the first of the new year, let me dedicate this one to my visiting cousin's so-very-pleasant girlfriend, with whom we got to spend some extra time, thanks to the storm. To you, Chloe... and to my cousin, whom I hope made a very specific resolution the other day:

So whachoo make of this act? Deliberate recall of Darryl Hall, with a dollop of Simon LeBon and a lot of Motown soul.

Wow, I was just listening to that today and thinking about posting it here. I didn't think of Hall & Oates, but that's a good connection. Definitely soulful with a nice horn section.

Yeah, the echoes at the top are right out of "Look of Love." Martin Fry, the world has caught up to you.

Primary colors are very eighties.

Re: Track of the Day, 2011

Yeah, I couldn't think of the guy's name, but Martin Fry.

I was streaming the record, there's a ton of Darryl Hall love on it (although this guy doesn't have as authentic a voice, pairing him with that funky diva is like trumping Oates). Of course all bands of today worship Hall & Oates (and ELO) as far as I can tell.

Trumping Oates would actually be a much better band name than Fitz and the Tantrums. Seriously, who wants to be associated with tantrums?

I think the guys name is Fitzgerald or something. I dunno, if I saw that name on the sign outside a bar, I might walk right in, figuring that was a band out to entertain me.

Re: Track of the Day, 2011

I see "Trumping Oates," I think "Someone's got creative with naming their poetry term-paper."

I see "Fitz and the Tantrums," and I'm stepping into that club. I'm not expecting an ABC/Daryl Hall/Stax thing-- probably more of a mod/angular punk experience is closer to it-- but I'll take what I get here gladly, and I'll ask for some more.

I see more of a '60s Mod/Meet the Beatles/Blue Train thing going on with the video aesthetics than I do anything of the '80s.

Anyway... NICE pick, JCL.

I present a palate cleanser from last summer's Onion A/V club cover series-- Baltimore's Wye Oak covering one of my favorite Kinks numbers, "Strangers". I love the original... and I may like this one a little better.

PS - me & some friends created an 'Rdio' group on FB, filling in where Rdio's social networking aspect falls short. So far a pretty fair amount of recommendations & discussion. Feel creepy just adding peeps at random, so if any of u want in, lemme know. Didn't see a way to send out invites.

Lyrics here. Seems like she went from "so sad, i miss u" to "i will chop yer peen off & hang it in the garage", so I think she might be over him. Stay strong, baby girl.

If you ever wanna call me from LA,
i will simply tell you that i've gone away.
I can't handle hearing from you everyday.
So I'm just glad your ever tired of being ok

ahh ahh

but you will never call me 'cos your never there,
I can finally see that you where never there.
If you ever call again, I'll have to tell you, I can't be your friend.

ahh ahh

ohhhhhhh ohhhh ohh oh

Driving 'round for hours, seaching for a clue.
waiting to tell you i can't ever be with you.
so run back to her love, because it's over now.
Safe to say that baby never comes around.

Great soul arrangement, but his existential post-punk gothguy voice doesn't quite stay afloat on it, does it? It kind of sounds like the demo version that the songwriter sings on to pitch his song to the A&R guy representing the better singer. (i say because this is how my tracks come out.)

I kind of like his voice on other tracks, with a low spooky baritone growl. But he sounds like he's between voices on this.

The lazy beat certainly gives me that feel. But the voice filter adds this level of anxiety that cuts through that.

My wife was listening in the next room unbeknownst to me and exploded out at that point with "Ugh, what's with the voice filter." She'll typically be less inclined than I to stay with a song past something like that. I don't like that particularly, but she's a sensitive indicator of where things went wrong.

It's as if they thought, "well, if we just sing it regular, will they still identify us as indy? We're like good looking surfers too, they might mistake us for a boy band." Like the whistle and breezy feel. Also, outrunning bullets not my idea of breezy material.

Re: Track of the Day, 2011

WAPP was a strange phenomenon in NY radio. Born over the summer, taking over 103.5 from soft rock pioneers WTFM (booo!), they existed as a third rock option just beyond WBAB and WNEW, but born at the dawn of MTV, they weren't anchored in the Beatles/Stones/Zep/Who Mount Rushmore of classic rock, and drew their playlist largely from rock artists breaking then on MTV --- artists that the classick rock establishment really weren't sure what to do with.

They launched with a "commercial-free summer," a promotion they reminded the listener of so frequently that some didn't know their call letters and called the station "Commercial Free Summer" well after the summer ended.

Song I associate most closely with WAPP and the Commercial Free Summer:

Boy that song goes almost nowhere beyond the tagline.

My brain's WAPP-CFS anchor:

^ By the way, appears to be a (well done) amateur version of Frayed Knot's favorite tactic of synching studio recordings to footage from live performances.

Awesome, cracked anthem. Damn, I love being reminded of how much I enjoy an on-point Built to Spill.

And speaking of cracked anthems... I'm curious to hear the reactions to Merril Garbus and tUnEYaRdS performing-- or "creating?"-- "Gangsta" in Studio 360's hood earlier this summer.

Love the crap out of her. That sounds dope live, too.

First time I heard her, I thought she was some street-wise black chick.

Word. Downloading the whole album now. Not a fan of ten-song albums; I feel like I'm not getting my money's worth. But as you noted, I'd buy anything Butch puts out.

Re: Track of the Day, 2011

The other new album that came out this week was Mike Doughty's "Yes And Also Yes." Mike's been kinda schizophrenic over his career too; his last album was mostly him and a guitar and was kinda bland, which was too bad because his live stuff with just him and a guitar (like "Busking," which he recorded in a NYC subway tunnel) is actually pretty cool. But "YAAY" brings back the na-nas and the full instrumentation, and whereas it's not entirely as neat as "Haughty Melodic," which is brilliant.

Anyway, the first single is "Na Na Nothing," and it's pretty good.

You ever suddenly realize 9 months later that you didn't get the joke? Fitz and the Tantrums is a pun on "fits and tantrums". Okay I think I like the band name better now that I get it.

Glen Campbell was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer's and this last album and accompanying "Goodbye Tour" has a kind of Warren Zevon "The Wind"/Cash "Man Comes Around" feel to it. He's a great singer and guitar player.

Amy Winehouse's last recording, "Body and Soul," a duet with Tony Bennett.

[youtube:32fy4202]iBSwR2S83Us[/youtube:32fy4202]

There's a lot of good there, but her apparent (to me, maybe not so much to you) attempts to channel Billy Holiday just how pre-ordained her early death was.

Her face is back to pre-Back to Black fullness; between that and the toxicology from her autopsy... it sure seems like she was on-the-wagon.
