When I see new posts on this thread, I cover up the left side of my screen, and try to guess which member posted the newest list or lists of songs. I have a high accuracy rate. Edgy gives his identity away because of the meticulous way that he formats his list. I need to see a few more lists from newbie LWFS, though, to get a feel for his preferences. There's two members who I conflate frequently, but right now, I can't remember which two. I think it's Willets and Sharpie, but I'm not sure.

The 'pod perhaps trends more modern though I was kind of surprised to hear it characterized that way (and the current list definitely so though Country Joe & the Fish go pretty far back). I still have a big vinyl collection plus a turntable that I use so much of my older stuff doesn't live in one place but in another.

|
John Cougar Lunchbucket Jan 07 2011 09:28 AM Re: iTunes and iPod reloaded - v2011 (cont'd from v2010) |
My father in law got one of those turntables that record onto discs, but the software really sucked and was very slow (although, an old laptop running the sw might have been partially to blame). It was exasperating to use and many recordings didn't come out right. Probably better to just record whole saides of albums as 1 track than try to go song by song.
|
TheOldMole Jan 07 2011 09:48 AM Re: iTunes and iPod reloaded - v2011 (cont'd from v2010) |
Then you can use a program like Goldwave to break them back down into individual tracks.
|
sharpie Jan 07 2011 11:28 AM Re: iTunes and iPod reloaded - v2011 (cont'd from v2010) |
I have a burner that works really well transferring discs to CDs but when transferred to itunes it comes out with really low volume. It doesn't really bother me, however, that my entire vinyl collection isn't on CD. I like taking out the records which I wouldn't do when I have them digitally.

I just re-watched Bonnie and Clyde, and was sort of surprised that the soundtrack, outside of a couple of Flatt and Scruggs numbers, isn't that good. There's a lot of that hurry-up car chase banjo music that you associate with stuff like the Dukes of Hazzard. I guess this was before George Lucas and Ry Cooder transformed our sense of what an Americana soundtrack could do.

If you have any programming skills, I wish you'd hire yourself out as a developer to iTunes. Apple's program for organizing a user's music collection in iTunes has to be the crappiest, glitchiest, most emabarraskin thing I ever saw. I would imagine that there must be hundreds of thousands of high school kids in this country that could put out a better program than what Apple has.

What version of iTunes are you running on your computer? I'd say that you took this thread in a loopy rather than wrong direction. iTunes orders the songs I apostrophe first, then I blank space, and then I letters and numbers. But I just noticed that this "order" is not perfectly so. Right after I Zimbra (Talking Heads), but before Iced Over (Stevie Ray Vaughan), my list has three other I apostrophe songs. This is illogical. I assume that the apostrophes must be different. But I don't see any difference.

Crazier is that when they were new it was the other way around for me, at least for a short time. RR reminds me of a girl I used to date named Sandy. She'd just come off breaking the heart of a longtime boyfriend and was about to get same from me. Heh heh. Nice girl but she loved shitty music and lousy guys. My appreciation for Oasis is only now arriving. I mean, I always liked what I'd heard of theirs but was turned off some by the feeling I got that I was supposed to like them and by the press subsequently reporting on what douchebags they were. But I really really love the What's the Story album now.

1) It's kind of stupid. That's why I structured it as a guessing game, because I thought, "Nobody would willingly listen/participate in a playlist with such a ridiculous common theme." 2) Listening is probably the best way to figure it out, though you needn't listen in any particular order, and you might not need to hear any more than 1 song to figure it out. Every song gives it away! If you do figure it out, be cool and show me you did not by adding eligible songs to the list, not by saying so in the comments (or you know, saying what the common thing is).

Everyone has that song. It's packaged with the iTunes software. Same with OAM's Blues by Aaron Goldberg and a few others (The Pogues, maybe?). I reckon that the Aaron Goldberg free tune is not necessarily a coincidence: because of the double aa paired letter combo in Aaron (is that called a diagraph?) the Goldberg tune will likely show up first in your cover flow. Aaron Goldberg precedes even Aaron Heilman.

Most people cringe at my music arranging habits. But regardless, i'm going off my iPod. i Only use iTunes as the medium to add music to the iPod (and honestly, with all the reformats and new computers I've gone through, with the exception of the stuff I 1-starred and removed from the Pod because i don't like, it's the same list. I've never seen this Karsh Kale thing. ;-))

I'm in agreement with this. I like this song (and "Warheads" from that record too) even if they both are obnoxiously showy and overdone -- as are the songs on that album that aren't good, and my god there are a lot of those. Interestingly a bloggah I like happened to tackle this song this morning and says as much as well. http://auspowerpop.blogspot.com/2011/02/franks-faves-on-fridays.html

(edited to appease Wolfie's desire for commentary) 1. Run Over By A Truck - Weezer - this is a bonus track off their 'Raditude' disc. 2. Run Run Run - The Velvet Underground & Nico - credit to the CPF for all of my V.U. stuff. Was educated to the awesomeness of this band here and remain forever grateful. 3. Run The Heart - Sleigh Bells - a hipster cool doofus friend of mine likes to 'enlighten' me with all the music he hears and likes. This band sounds like Bjork with a bunch of people banging pots and pans loudly behind her. 4. Run This Town (feat. Rhianna & Kanye West) - Jay-Z - not a lot of hip-hop on my 'pod but when I hear something I like... 5. Run-Around - Blues Traveler 6. Run, Baby, Run - Sheryl Crow - This was from her first big album - bought it because of 'Leaving Las Vegas'. 7. Runaway Feeling - The Thorns - This is an 'okay' disc. I prefer my Matthew Sweet with nothing on it though. 8. Runaway Train - Soul Asylum 9. Runnin' Down A Dream - Tom Petty 10. Runnin' Too Deep - Keith Richards - I love listening to this disc (Main Offender) and trying to figure out the lyrics. Example: when I hear - 'Booze and pills and fried eggs...', what Keith is really singing is 'Booze and pills and pow-der...'.

The whole "III Sides" record is unbelievably showy and overdone, but yet they pull it off. (The ballad section -- as much as I love "Tragic Comic" and "Stop The World" -- really drags the whole record down. "Seven Sundays" is the worst song in the history of music.)

1. "Run To The Sun," N*E*R*D. Relaxing, twangy, with off-key singing. What more can you ask for, coolness-wise, in the late nineties? 2. "Run's House," Run-DMC. For life's end-zone celebrations. 3. "Runaway," Kanye West. "Let's toast to the," etc. Interesting build (from one repeated piano note) and extended end vamp. 4. "Runaway," Bon Jovi. Yeah, I went to high school in Jersey. What of it, asshole? 5. "Runaway Dreamer," Felix Da Housecat. From a more electroclash-and-eyeliner period in my life. Kidding. Or am I? 6. "The Runway Song," Handsome Boy Modeling School feat. Kid Koala. Odd proto-Gorillaz Prince Paul/Dan the Automator side project, with fun DJ cuts and samples from the show "Get a Life." 7. "Rushing," Moby. Music to shop by. 8. "S'Vive," Bibio. Like if your grandma's music box played twee-but-weirdly soulful electronic music. (Last year's Ambivalence Avenue is one hell of a record.) 9. "Sack-O-Woe," The Mar-Keys. R & B instrumental, from the always-tuneful House of Stax. Gravy on a biscuit. 10. "The Sacrifice Of Victor," Prince & The New Power Generation. Just prior to the symbol-as-name business, when he was doing the Prince scream more. You can New Jack swing, if you want to!

Gene's solo album is uneven, and his second solo album is a disaster. But when he turns the schlock meter down, he can be really good. Actually, the four solo albums have a surprising number of good songs. Paul was playing a bunch from his album on a solo tour a couple years ago. I saw him on his first solo tour at Toad's in New Haven. Big fun!

Yes, I said it. 6. She Is Mine - The Psychedelic Furs 7. She Loves You - The Beatles 8. She's Crafty - Beastie Boys 9. She's Electric - Oasis 10. She's Got Everything - The Romantics

I have a stripped-back acoustic version of "She Bop" that's really interesting. And the Lips song was one of those tunes that screams college to me; my roommate and I saw it on MTV in the middle of the night freshman year and it was like we'd discovered the Beatles. Sadly, I don't like anything they've done since then.
We used to have Ducks season tickets behind the third-base dugout. One of the mid-inning promotions they do is "sing for your supper," where a fan stands on the dugout and sings karaoke, and then we all cheer and the guy wins a restaurant gift certificate. One time, I got up to get food at the concession stand, which was right behind our section, at the end of a half-inning. They introduced "Ed from Levittown, who's going to sing 'Two Tickets to Paradise,'" while I was standing on line. The guy was great; he really nailed it. My wife and our friend turned around to me and we exchanged a nod and a thumbs-up to acknowledge how good the guy was... turns out, as I got back to my seat, that it was actually Eddie Money up there.
Rawk.
2) There's a Joe Perry song I don't have? I'm on it. 5) Even though that's on a covers disc, I didn't realize it was a cover. Duh. 6) I really enjoy Katy Perry, and I'm not afraid to admit it. She can really sing. 8) Dabble? I'm surprised they're not entirely categorized as Christian rock sometimes. (But I guess all the cursing in songs like "Shit Towne" and "Waitress" would preclude that.) Great stuff, albeit a little too Jesusy for me sometimes. The good thing is that it's not overly Jesusy, so we can still play Live/Ed K songs at our UU services. (I've done "Love Shines," and have a few others on my list to do someday.)

OK, I was off a little. That's Rick Neilson wailing on "See You in Your Dreams." Joe Perry plays on "Radioactive" -- great song -- and "Tunnel of Love." "Love Shines" is a beautiful song, and I've used "Heaven" as the basis for for youth group lessons. I'll believe it when I see it for myself I don't need no one to tell me about heaven I look at my daughter, and I believe. I don't need no proof when it comes to God and truth I can see the sunset and I perceive Brilliant.

I'm a huge 10,000 Maniacs fan and I think Natalie really screwed up by leaving. I liked her first solo album, the second was OK, the third not so much and the latest one not at all. She has unusual taste when it comes to covers. "Sympathy" actually sounds pretty neat -- I have a couple live versions of it -- but she went off the rails, covering Bowie's "Space Oddity," and Neil Young's "After the Gold Rush." That first solo album wasn't too bad-- not my speed, but well-executed (you could argue that the best stuff on it works BECAUSE it's 10,000-Maniacs-y, except for the Carole King-sounding single whose name I forget). She strikes me as the sort of artist who has a LOT of strong-but-bad ideas, and who needs a strong creative partner, be it producer or bandmate, to countervail those. IOW, she needs someone to talk her out of covering "Space Oddity" or setting 100 poems to music. Could jump off a few places there, but I'll go from "Tangled Up In Blue" to a pretty soul-thick place (the "tear"s will do it): 1) "Tango," Lady Sovereign 2) "Tape You," N*E*R*D* 3) "Tbtf," Broken Social Scene/Kevin Drew 4) "Team Zissou," Seu Jorge 5) "Tear Stained Letter," Johnny Cash 6) "Teardrop Sea," The Tonettes 7) "Tears Dry On Their Own," Amy Winehouse (a repurposing of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," but a pretty damn good one, for my money) 8) "Tears Of A Clown," Smokey Robinson & the Miracles 9) "Tears On My Pillow," Little Anthony & The Imperials 10) "Tell Mama," Etta James

On the nose! I think the band did that, kept her in check. Now she's lost. Yet I got into a discussion with our music critic who said the best thing she ever did was leave -- "They were a second-rate band and holding her back" -- and that her newest stuff is her best. I am convinced that once a person becomes a music critic, they embrace the unpopular because it makes them feel smarter than the rest of us. This effectively ended the conversation with the music critic. Back to the game: Off "Tears on My Pillow" 1) "Teenage Dream" by Katy Perry. I know this wrong in so many ways, but, damn, I like this stupid song. 2) "Teenage Lobotomy" by The Ramones (two versions) Heck yeah! 3) "A Teenager in Love" by Dion and the Belmonts 4) "Telecommunication" by Flock of Seagulls 5) "Telephone" by Lady GaGa. My daughter works out of the same iTunes 6) "Telephone Line" by ELO. Love this song! 7) "Tell Her About It" by Billy Joel 8) "Tell Mama" (two versions) by Etta James, another discovery after visiting the RnR Hall of Fame 9) "Tell me What You Want" by Zebra. I interviewed drummer Guy Gelso once. A realy nice guy, very patient with a green and star0struck NCC Vignette editor. 10) "Tell me When" by Human League

I'll play off the esteemed Mr. Joel. 1. "Tell Me" by Nelson -- Off their lost "Imaginator" disc. 2. "Tell Me A Lie" by the Fratellis 3. "Tell Me Baby" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers 4. "Tell The Truth" by Paul Gilbert -- the guitar virtuoso from Mr. Big. Huge in Japan. 5. "Temperature" by Aerosmith -- I'm really enjoying Steven Tyler on "Idol." 6. "Temporary Title" by Butch Walker -- Sorry, no Thunder in this ten, but Butch is here. Three versions. 7. "Temptation" by Billy Joel -- Actually almost deleted this last night, because this song is boring. 8. "Tempted" by Squeeze -- By the fruit of your mother, indeed. 9. "Ten Speed" by Coheed & Cambria -- Great, great tune. Claudio's voice takes some time to get used to, but the guy can wail. Still have no idea what's going on in their series of concept albums, but I love listening to them. 10. "Ten Years" by Joe Fuckin' Perry -- Written as a love song to his wife Billie. Awful, awful song. Really above and beyond the call of awful.

I used Rdio, and not iTunes to gather the above songs -- 90% I don't "own" but can listen to anytime I want to. 50% I can say I'd have never even heard were it not for streaming. Buying the 9 CDs those songs came from on iTunes would cost me more than I pay for a year's worth of listens to these -- and many thousands of other CDs -- at rdio. The future is in the stream. Saw REM at MSG on the "Monster" tour, largely to try to impress a girl. I was mostly lost, because I knew a lot less songs than I thought I would, and because Michael Stipe used a music stand with the lyrics, which as a wannabe rock star at the time I thought was bush. When they played "Tongue," however, they had a disco ball come down center stage; the spotlights sent sparkles all over the arena, which was cool as hell.

I think 'Joshua Tree' and 'Achtung Baby' are 1 and 1A in terms of their best albums. 1. Unbated Vicar Of Scorched Earth - Guided By Voices (a friend who is a HUGE fan of GBV burned me a disc with about 15 of their thousands of songs. Good stuff really but you'd wear yourself out trying to be a fan of this band) 2. Unchained Melody - U2 (cover, of course, of the Righteous Bros. tune - they play this live quite a bit) 3. Uncle Albert / Admiral Halsey - Paul & Linda McCartney 4. Uncle John's Band - The Grateful Dead 5. The Undefeated - Iggy Pop (off of 'Brick By Brick' which I think is a great album, but I never hear anybody talking about it and the only song I ever hear played off of it is 'Candy' with Kate Pierson) 6. Under a Blanket Of Blue - Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong 7. Under Control - The Strokes (anybody else see them suck it hard on SNL last week?) 8. Under My Thumb - Rolling Stones (has to be one of my top 3 favorite Stones songs) 9. Under My Voodoo - Sublime 10. Under Pressure - My Chemical Romance & The Used (an 'okay' cover but compared to the original it doesn't even rate) 10a. Under Pressure - Queen & David Bowie

Tomorrow I'm seeing him with Joe Boyd, a music-industry guy who wrote a book about his life and hard times. Boyd was the sound engineer at the Newport Folk Festival when Dylan went electric, then moved to the UK and worked with Pink Floyd, the Incredible String Band and Fairport Convention among others. He moved back to the US and produced Maria Muldaur, Richard & Linda Thompson and others. He reads from his book and Robyn sings songs by those guys. I'll report on it later (the next night I see Lucinda Williams so I might do a twofer).

No they're not. I just don't have them. I've got "Voodoo Chile" but not "Voodoo Chile Blues." I might have the Eric Dolphy on LP.

Yup, me too. And until sharpie wrote that I thought it was the same song and I was composing a list.

Can't believe this one has people stumped. Waterloo Sunset or those Billy Bragg/Wilco albums or Nick Drake have got to be on someone's server.

1. "The Way You Move" by Outkast - Everyone loves that double album, but... meh. 2. "We'll Never Know" by Lifehouse - I don't know this song. Deleting it. 2 do-over. "We're All Alright" by Nelson - Off their lost "Imaginator" disc. 3. "We're All Gonna Die" by Slash f Iggy Pop 4. "We're All To Blame" by Sum 41 - Part of the awful rap-rock era. 5. "We're An American Band" by Grand Funk Railroad - Voted "most likely to spin off the next list" by the other songs in this thread. (Also a Poison cover.) 6. "We're Both In Love With A Sexy Lady" by Flight of the Conchords - Second disc not as strong as the first. 7. "We're Breaking Up" by Against Me! 8. "We're Brothers Forever" by Renaldo Lapuz - Downloaded this off YouTube many moons ago. Still love when it comes up on shuffle. 9. "We're Going To Be Friends" by Jack Johnson - Gained a little life by appearing in some Sesame Street PBS commercials. 10. "We're No Good Together" by Tesla - One of the first rock ballads I ever learned to play on piano. Horrifically boring in retrospect, however.

I should have that OutKast on mine. Like... I'm fairly certain I uploaded it onto our Mac a couple of years ago.

1. We're Not Deep - The Housemartins 2. We're Not Going Back - The Housemartins - Back in the day (mid-'80s, I couldn't get enough of these guys - amazing voices and harmonies coupled with addicting hooks and incredibly deep and thoughtful lyrics. As much as I loved the songs, I really had only the barest idea of what they were about) 3. We're Not Right - David Gray 4. We're Okay - Original Broadway Cast - RENT - What can I say - it's a great show with great songs. 5. We're Only Gonna Die For Our Arrogance - Sublime 6. We're The Same - Matthew Sweet 7. We've Got A Groovey Thing Goin' - Simnon & Garfunkel 8. The Weakness In Me - Joan Armatrading - I loves me some Joan. 9. Wear My Ring Around Your Neck - Ricky Van Shelton 10. Welcome Back Victoria - Jesus Jones - bought this cd for 'Right Here, Right Now. In retrospect I should've just bought the single.

Awesome. I'll add Ian Hunter's "Who Do You Love" to the mix (as well as two Def Leppard-related covers). No idea if any or all of these are the same song; I know that Hunter's song is not the Thorogood song.
